Surprise

Chapter 5

I read Vanessa's message three times.

Each time, I felt colder.

"Who's Brandon?"

Marcus stared at the phone.

"I don't know."

Denise leaned forward.

"How did you find this conversation?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Vanessa left her tablet open. It was connected to her messages."

I looked at my son.

"Did she know you saw it?"

He shook his head.

"No."

Denise held up her hand.

"Don't access anything further without legal advice. Preserve what you already saw, and let investigators handle the evidence properly."

Marcus nodded.

I looked at the message again.

The wording was clear.

Vanessa hadn't been discussing a harmless family arrangement.

She had been planning to use my home.

Whether or not I agreed.

I felt suddenly grateful for Lorraine.

For Denise.

For the uncomfortable feeling that had pushed me to update my documents.

Three days earlier, I had believed I was merely protecting my future.

Now I understood how badly I'd needed that protection.

"Why did you save the message?" I asked Marcus.

He looked at me.

"Because I finally realized she wasn't going to stop."

His voice cracked.

"And because I knew you'd never forgive me if I helped her hurt you."

I studied his face.

"Marcus, forgiveness isn't something you earn by hiding the truth until the last possible moment."

He looked down.

"I know."

Denise made copies of the relevant information and advised him about the next steps.

Then she arranged for us to speak with the investigator handling my report.

The next few days were exhausting.

I answered questions.

Reviewed financial statements.

Identified documents.

Explained who had access to my personal information.

Marcus cooperated too.

He provided records of conversations with Vanessa about my house and finances.

But Vanessa didn't know the extent of what we'd discovered.

At least, not yet.

Then Brandon's identity came to light.

He wasn't a distant relative or a business consultant.

He was Vanessa's former boyfriend.

And he had a history of failed real estate ventures.

I learned this during a meeting with the investigator, Detective Samuel Brooks.

Brooks was a calm man in his fifties who rarely raised his voice.

He laid several records across the table.

"We're still determining exactly what happened," he explained.

"But we have reason to examine the relationship between Willow Ridge Consulting and Mr. Brandon Ellis."

I stared at Brandon's photograph.

He was smiling beside a luxury car.

I didn't recognize him.

"How long has Vanessa known him?"

"Several years."

Marcus sat beside me.

His jaw tightened.

"She told me he was her cousin."

Detective Brooks looked at him.

"That appears inconsistent with the information we've obtained."

Marcus covered his face.

I felt a strange mixture of anger and pity.

My son had helped create this disaster.

But he was also discovering that his marriage had been built on lies.

"Was she having an affair?" he whispered.

The detective remained careful.

"That's a personal question we can't answer from these records."

Marcus nodded.

I placed a hand on his arm.

Not because everything was forgiven.

But because I could see that he was hurting.

He looked at me.

For a moment, he seemed like the little boy who used to come running whenever he fell off his bicycle.

Then he looked away.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I nodded.

"I know."

But I wasn't ready to say anything more.

The following afternoon, Vanessa called me.

I watched her name flash across my phone.

For a moment, I considered ignoring it.

Then I remembered Denise's advice.

I let the call go to voicemail.

A minute later, a message arrived.

"Evelyn, we need to talk. Marcus is acting crazy. You're tearing apart our marriage."

I listened once.

Then saved it.

Another message followed.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Then a third.

"That house should stay in Marcus's family."

I almost laughed.

It was in Marcus's family.

It belonged to his mother.

But Vanessa seemed unable to understand that distinction.

That evening, Lorraine came over.

We sat at the kitchen table drinking tea.

"Do you regret changing the deed?" she asked.

I shook my head.

"No."

"Good."

I stared into my cup.

"Sometimes I wonder whether Marcus will ever forgive me."

Lorraine leaned forward.

"Evelyn, stop asking whether the people who hurt you will forgive you for protecting yourself."

I looked up.

She continued.

"You spent your whole life putting everyone else first. Thomas loved you, but even he sometimes relied on you to carry too much."

I smiled sadly.

"That's true."

"And Marcus learned that you would always fix things."

I sighed.

"Also true."

"Now you're teaching him something different."

"What?"

Lorraine squeezed my hand.

"That love can have boundaries."

I sat quietly.

Then I smiled.

"Thomas would have liked that."

Lorraine laughed.

"He would have stood on the porch and told Vanessa to carry those suitcases right back to the car."

For the first time in days, I laughed too.

The sound surprised me.

I hadn't realized how much I needed it.

Then my doorbell rang.

Lorraine looked toward the hallway.

"Were you expecting someone?"

I shook my head.

We walked to the front window.

A woman stood on the porch.

She wore a gray business suit.

Her hair was pulled back neatly.

She carried a large envelope.

I opened the door cautiously.

"Can I help you?"

The woman smiled.

"Mrs. Carter?"

"Yes."

"My name is Alicia Grant. I work with the financial institution connected to Willow Ridge Consulting."

My heart began racing.

"Is something wrong?"

She glanced toward Lorraine.

"I've been asked to provide information to your attorney. I was nearby and wanted to leave the contact details."

I hesitated.

"Please send everything through Denise Walker."

Alicia nodded.

"Of course."

Then she lowered her voice.

"Mrs. Carter, there's something you should know."

I stared at her.

"What?"

She looked uncomfortable.

"The loan application wasn't the only document prepared."

My stomach tightened.

"What other document?"

She swallowed.

"A proposed transfer of your entire property."

I gripped the doorframe.

"And whose name was listed as the new owner?"

Alicia looked directly at me.

"Vanessa Carter."

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

May you like

Because the woman who'd demanded my keys hadn't simply wanted to move into my house.

She had been preparing to take it completely.
