Chapter 9: The Last Secret Of The Whitmore Family
The hospital hallway had never felt so dangerous.
Daniel had spent his entire life walking into rooms where people feared him.
Boardrooms.
Negotiations.
Private meetings.
People stood when he entered.
People listened when he spoke.
But standing outside Sarah’s hospital room, Daniel felt something completely different.
For the first time, he wasn’t facing competition.
He wasn’t facing a business rival.
He was facing a truth that had been hidden for decades.
And someone was willing to protect that truth at any cost.
Daniel stared at Marcus.
The former family attorney looked nothing like the confident man Daniel remembered.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His face was pale.
His hands were shaking.
“Who are they?””
Marcus looked around the hallway.
“Not here.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I spent my entire life being told when I was allowed to know the truth.””
He pointed toward Sarah’s room.
“My daughter was hidden from me.””
He pointed toward the hospital bed.
“The woman I loved was nearly destroyed.””
Then he looked at Marcus.
“I’m done waiting.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
For a moment, he looked ashamed.
Then he whispered:
“The Whitmore family has enemies.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“It’s true.””
“Then tell me who.””
Marcus hesitated.
And that hesitation made Daniel angry.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Sarah’s room.
“The people who helped Richard build everything.””
Daniel frowned.
“My father?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“And now they’re coming after Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus took a breath.
“Because Sarah knows where the original documents are.””
Daniel froze.
“What documents?””
“The ones Richard spent years trying to destroy.””
Eleanor stepped closer.
“The inheritance records.””
Marcus nodded.
“The real ones.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would Sarah have them?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Ethan Bennett gave them to her.””
Sarah’s father.
Daniel remembered Eleanor’s words.
Ethan discovered the truth.
Ethan knew what Richard had done.
“What exactly do these documents prove?””
Marcus looked at him.
“That Richard Whitmore had no legal right to control the entire Whitmore empire.””
Daniel felt cold.
“Explain.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Your grandfather created a family trust.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He looked at Daniel.
“The trust wasn’t only for Richard’s children.””
Daniel waited.
“It included every biological descendant.””
Daniel immediately thought of Emma.
Noah.
Lily.
All the hidden children.
Marcus continued.
“Richard changed the rules after taking control.””
“How?””
“He removed names.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Whose names?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Anyone he believed threatened his power.””
The answer was obvious.
But hearing it still hurt.
“Noah.””
Marcus nodded.
“Sarah.””
“Emma.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“My daughter was erased before she even knew her own name.””
Marcus looked away.
“I know.””
Daniel studied him.
“You helped him.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised Daniel.
“Why?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Everyone was afraid.””
“I know.””
“And because of that, everyone let him destroy people.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You’re right.””
The answer stopped Daniel.
He expected excuses.
Instead, Marcus accepted the blame.
“I was weak.””
Daniel stared.
Marcus continued:
“Richard knew how to use people’s weaknesses.””
“What was yours?””
Marcus looked down.
“My daughter.””
Daniel said nothing.
“Richard threatened her future.””
Daniel understood.
Another person trapped.
Another person controlled.
“But you still helped him.””
Marcus nodded.
“I did.””
The silence was heavy.
Then Sarah’s voice came from behind them.
“Marcus.””
Everyone turned.
Sarah was standing near the doorway.
A nurse had helped her sit up.
Daniel immediately moved toward her.
“You shouldn’t be standing.””
She ignored him.
Her eyes were fixed on Marcus.
“You knew.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Yes.””
Sarah’s expression changed.
“You knew Daniel was searching for me.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Emma needed him.””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
The pain in Sarah’s voice was worse than anger.
It was disappointment.
“How could you?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Marcus had no answer.
Because it was true.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“You remember everything?””
She nodded slightly.
“More than before.””
“What happened?””
Sarah looked at Marcus.
Then at Daniel.
“The night I disappeared…”
She took a breath.
“I wasn’t attacked because of Emma.””
Daniel listened carefully.
“I was attacked because I found something.””
“What?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Proof that Richard had another child.””
Daniel thought of Lily.
“The girl in the picture.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“Lily.””
Sarah looked surprised.
“You know?””
Daniel nodded.
“She’s my sister.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I was trying to tell you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because Lily wasn’t hidden because Richard was ashamed.””
Sarah’s voice became quiet.
“She was hidden because she knew the truth.””
Daniel frowned.
“What truth?””
Sarah looked at Marcus.
Marcus answered.
“Lily saw Richard change the records.””
Daniel froze.
“She was a child.””
“Yes.””
“She saw that?””
Marcus nodded.
“Children notice things adults ignore.””
Sarah continued:
“Lily was the only person who saw Richard replace the original inheritance papers.””
Daniel stared.
“So she knew where they were.””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked between them.
“Where is my sister?””
Sarah looked away.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“We don’t know.””
Daniel felt frustrated.
“Another person missing.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with sadness.
“She was taken.””
“By who?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then said:
“By Richard.””
Daniel froze.
“My father died three years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Because Richard planned everything before he died.””
Daniel felt a chill.
Marcus nodded.
“Richard created a system.””
“What kind of system?””
“A way to continue controlling the family even after he was gone.””
Daniel looked confused.
“How?””
Marcus sighed.
“He left instructions.””
“Instructions?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Marcus looked toward the floor.
“In a private vault.””
Daniel stared.
“A vault?””
Marcus nodded.
“One only accessible through Richard’s personal authorization.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Even after death, his father had built another wall.
Another secret.
Another trap.
Then Daniel remembered something.
“The key.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What key?””
Daniel reached into his pocket.
The old metal key Sarah had left.
The key from beneath the oak tree.
Marcus’ face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel noticed.
“You know it.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Where?””
“Sarah left it.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“No.””
“What?””
Marcus whispered:
“That key was supposed to be destroyed.””
Daniel tightened his grip.
“Why?””
“Because it opens the only place Richard couldn’t control.””
Sarah looked at Marcus.
“What does it open?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“The original family archive.””
Daniel stared.
“Where?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then answered:
“Under the old Whitmore mansion.””
Daniel felt a strange connection.
The garden.
The oak tree.
The key.
Everything led back home.
But before he could speak, Sarah suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
Her face was full of fear.
“Don’t go there.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard wasn’t the only person protecting those secrets.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah looked toward the hospital window.
A black vehicle had stopped outside.
Her face changed.
Daniel followed her gaze.
Someone stepped out.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Marcus immediately went pale.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus whispered:
“Richard’s last partner.””
The man entered the hospital lobby.
Daniel felt his body tense.
“Name?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“Jonathan Vale.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who is that?””
Marcus answered quietly:
“The man who helped Richard build the empire.””
The elevator doors opened downstairs.
Jonathan walked inside.
Marcus continued:
“And the man who ordered Sarah’s disappearance.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“He tried to kill her?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Sarah grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“Don’t let him know you found me.””
But it was already too late.
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
Jonathan Vale stepped into the hallway.
His eyes immediately found Sarah.
Then Daniel.
A slow smile appeared on his face.
“Well.””
He adjusted his coat.
“I wondered how long it would take.””
Daniel stepped in front of Sarah.
“Who are you?””
Jonathan smiled.
“Someone who spent five years making sure this family’s secrets stayed buried.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You failed.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“No.””
He smiled.
“I succeeded.””
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
“What?””
Jonathan looked toward Sarah.
“She woke up.””
A pause.
“That means the last witness is finally available.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Witness to what?””
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
“To the night your father died.””
The hallway went silent.
Daniel stared.
“My father died three years ago.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Yes.””
Then he said:
“But he didn’t die naturally.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel felt his heart stop.
“What are you saying?””
Jonathan looked directly at him.
“Your father was murdered.””
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Then Jonathan added:
“And the person who killed him…”
He looked toward Sarah.
“…was trying to protect you.””
Daniel looked at Sarah.
She was crying.
Because she knew.
She knew who it was.
And before Daniel could ask, the hospital lights suddenly went out.
The hallway went completely dark.
A second later, an emergency alarm began screaming.
And somewhere in the darkness, a voice whispered:
“Daniel.””
A voice he had not heard in years.
May you like
His father’s voice.
But Richard Whitmore was dead.
