Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden In The Past

Daniel couldn’t move.

The phone was still pressed against his ear, even though the call had already ended.

Sarah’s final words repeated in his mind.

Your daughter is not the only child involved.

He looked at Emma.

His five-year-old daughter.

The child he had just discovered existed.

The child he had spent the last hour trying to understand.

And now there was another secret.

Another piece of his life hidden from him.

“Daddy?””

Emma’s voice pulled him back.

Daniel lowered the phone slowly.

“What?””

She looked worried.

“You look scared.””

The honesty of that sentence hurt.

Children noticed things adults tried to hide.

Daniel forced a small smile.

“I’m okay.””

Emma studied his face.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel froze.

The little girl who had only known him for a few hours already knew when he wasn’t telling the truth.

Because someone had taught her.

Because someone had spent five years helping her survive uncertainty.

Daniel glanced toward Victoria.

She was standing near the doorway.

Completely still.

The woman who had controlled every conversation in this mansion now looked like she had no idea what to say.

“Emma,” Daniel said softly, “can you go with Clara for a few minutes?””

The little girl looked between them.

“Are you going to leave?””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

He crouched down.

“I’m staying.””

Emma searched his eyes.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

Clara gently took her hand.

As they walked away, Daniel watched his daughter disappear down the hallway.

The same hallway where he had walked thousands of times.

The same hallway where she should have grown up.

The thought made his chest ache.

When they were alone, Daniel turned.

“Who else?””

Victoria said nothing.

“Sarah said Emma wasn’t the only child involved.””

“Daniel…”

“Who else?””

His voice echoed through the library.

Victoria looked exhausted.

“I don’t know what she meant.””

Daniel stared.

“Don’t insult me.””

“I’m not.””

“You expect me to believe that after tonight?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to say something.

Something real.

Then she opened them again.

“I know Sarah had secrets.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone had secrets except me.””

“That’s not true.””

“Really?””

He walked toward the desk and placed the phone down.

“You knew about my daughter.””

Victoria looked away.

“You knew Sarah didn’t abandon me.””

Silence.

“You knew there was a custody agreement with my fake signature.””

Her lips tightened.

“And now Sarah says there’s another child.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“So tell me something.””

“What?””

“Was my entire relationship with you built on lies?””

Victoria looked hurt.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I need an answer.””

She sat down slowly.

“I never wanted things to happen this way.””

Daniel stood across from her.

“That is not an answer.””

Victoria looked at the floor.

“I met Sarah before you think I did.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

“She wasn’t just your employee.””

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria took a deep breath.

“She was my sister.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared.

“No.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Sarah never mentioned having a sister.””

“Because she didn’t want anyone to know.””

Daniel felt overwhelmed.

Every answer created three more questions.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because our family was complicated.””

“That’s convenient.””

“It’s the truth.””

Daniel walked away.

His mind was racing.

Sarah.

Victoria.

Emma.

Another child.

A forged document.

A hidden past.

None of it made sense.

Then something hit him.

“Wait.””

He turned.

“You said Sarah was your sister.””

Victoria nodded.

“Half-sister.””

“And you knew her before she worked at my company?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why did you act like you barely knew her?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“Our family.””

Daniel waited.

Finally, she continued.

“Sarah and I grew up differently.””

“How?””

“She was always the one everyone loved.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s why you did this?””

“No.””

Victoria looked at him.

“It wasn’t jealousy.””

“Then what?””

Victoria’s voice lowered.

“Fear.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Fear makes people do terrible things.””

Victoria looked down.

“I know.””

The confession surprised him.

For the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t pretending.

She was admitting something.

Daniel studied her.

“Tell me everything.””

Victoria was quiet for a long time.

Then she began.

“Five years ago, when Sarah found out she was pregnant, she wanted to tell you immediately.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I know.””

“She came to my house first.””

Daniel froze.

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

“Of what?””

Victoria looked at him.

“She was scared you wouldn’t believe her.””

Daniel felt confused.

“Why would she think that?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Because someone had already started spreading rumors about her.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

That silence told him enough.

“Victoria.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t lie again.””

Her eyes moved back to him.

“I’m not.””

“You’re protecting someone.””

Victoria stood.

“Daniel, you don’t understand what was happening.””

“Then explain.””

She walked toward the bookshelf.

“There were people who didn’t want you with Sarah.””

“Who?””

“People who believed Sarah was a threat.””

Daniel stared.

“To my company?””

Victoria shook her head.

“To your family.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Your father.””

Daniel stopped.

His father.

The name carried weight.

Richard Whitmore.

The man who built the company before Daniel took over.

The man who taught him that emotions were weaknesses.

The man who died three years earlier.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Victoria didn’t answer immediately.

And Daniel knew.

He knew before she spoke.

“He knew about Sarah.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“When?””

“Before Emma was born.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“My father knew I had a daughter?””

Victoria nodded.

Daniel walked backward.

“No.””

His voice became quiet.

“No, that’s impossible.””

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Who else knew?””

Victoria looked away.

“Several people.””

“Names.””

“Daniel…”

“Names.””

She swallowed.

“Your father.””

A pause.

“Me.””

Another pause.

“And Marcus.””

Daniel frowned.

“Marcus?””

His company’s former legal advisor.

A man who had worked with his family for twenty years.

Daniel felt sick.

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because your father believed Sarah would destroy everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father never met her.””

Victoria looked at him.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Victoria whispered:

“He met her.””

The room became cold.

“When?””

“Before you knew she worked for you.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because your father made sure nobody did.””

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

His entire life had been controlled by people around him.

His father.

Victoria.

Everyone making decisions.

Everyone deciding what he could know.

Except him.

“What happened to Sarah?””

Victoria looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t do this.””

“I swear.””

“You expect me to believe you?””

“I know where she went after she disappeared.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where?””

Victoria’s voice became almost a whisper.

“A hospital.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Sarah was taken to a hospital five years ago.””

“Taken?””

Victoria nodded.

“She didn’t go there willingly.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“What happened?””

Victoria looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?””

Before she could answer, a sound came from the hallway.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

They turned.

Emma stood there.

Her face was pale.

Behind her was Clara.

“I’m sorry,” Clara said quickly.

“She heard voices.””

Daniel immediately softened.

“Emma.””

The little girl walked closer.

“Is Mommy coming home?””

Daniel froze.

The question was innocent.

But impossible.

He didn’t know what to say.

Because five years later, Sarah was alive.

Somewhere.

Waiting.

And now he had to decide what truth to give his daughter.

Daniel knelt.

“I don’t know.””

Emma’s eyes filled with confusion.

“But you talked to her.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Emma pointed toward the phone.

“I heard her voice.””

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“You knew it was her?””

Emma nodded.

“I know Mommy’s voice.””

A silence fell.

Then Emma asked:

“Why didn’t she come get me?””

Daniel had no answer.

No father should ever have to answer that question.

Especially when he didn’t know the truth himself.

He pulled Emma into his arms.

“I’m going to find out.””

Emma rested against him.

“Promise?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I promise.””

But before he could say anything else, Clara suddenly gasped.

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at something near the library desk.

A small object.

Something Daniel had not noticed before.

A photograph.

Clara walked closer.

Her face changed.

“Sir…”

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

She picked up the photograph with trembling hands.

“I know this picture.””

Daniel stood.

“What picture?””

Clara turned it around.

The photograph showed Sarah.

Holding baby Emma.

But that wasn’t what made Daniel freeze.

Standing beside Sarah was another person.

Someone Daniel knew.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone who had claimed for years that he had never met Sarah.

Daniel took the photograph.

His hands shook.

Because written on the back were three words.

A date.

And a name.

*Richard Whitmore.*

Daniel stared at his father’s name.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“Your father knew.””

Victoria whispered.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“And you knew he knew.””

Victoria couldn’t answer.

Daniel looked back at the photograph.

The truth he had been searching for was finally appearing.

But it was darker than he expected.

Because his daughter had not been hidden by one person.

She had been hidden by an entire family.

And somewhere out there was Sarah.

The only person who could explain why.

Daniel turned toward the door.

“I’m going to find her.””

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Daniel, wait.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

Her face was full of fear.

“Before you go…”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“You need to know something about Sarah.””

Daniel waited.

Victoria’s voice shook.

“She wasn’t running from you.””

A pause.

“She was running from someone who wanted Emma gone.””

Daniel’s blood went cold.

“Who?””

Victoria looked toward the dark hallway.

May you like

Then she said the name that made Daniel realize the danger was far from over.

“Your brother.””
