Chapter 7: The Daughter Everyone Was Fighting For
I don’t remember sitting down.
One second, I was standing in the kitchen with the phone pressed against my ear.
The next, I was on the floor.
My eyes stayed locked on Emma.
She was humming softly while coloring.
A pink house.
A yellow sun.
A family.
A normal picture.
A normal child.
But my world had just become something I no longer recognized.
“Daniel?””
Detective Cole’s voice pulled me back.
“Are you still there?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Do you understand what I said?””
I looked at my daughter.
“No.””
The answer came out honestly.
“No, I don’t.””
“I know this is difficult.””
“Difficult?””
My voice rose.
“My wife’s dead. My other wife is apparently obsessed with my daughter. There are secret files.
Hidden cameras. DNA tests. And now you’re telling me someone was investigating my child before she was even born.””
I lowered my voice.
“What am I supposed to understand?””
Silence.
Then Detective Cole said:
“I’m going to come over.””
“Why?””
“Because there are things we need to discuss in person.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Is Emma in danger?””
A pause.
The kind of pause no parent ever wants to hear.
“We don’t know yet.””
That answer was worse than yes.
Because it meant the danger was still unknown.
And unknown things are the ones that keep you awake at night.
Detective Cole arrived forty minutes later.
She came alone.
That scared me more.
If this was a normal police visit, there would be uniforms.
Questions.
Forms.
Procedure.
But this felt different.
This felt personal.
Emma was upstairs with my sister, who had come back after I called her.
I didn’t want Emma hearing another adult talk about her like she was a case file.
Detective Cole sat across from me.
She placed a folder on the table.
“This information was found during our search of Vanessa’s belongings.””
I stared at the folder.
“Her belongings?””
“Yes.””
“Did you find her?””
“Not yet.””
The words irritated me.
“Not yet?””
“She left before we could question her.””
I stood.
“You mean she ran.””
“I mean she is currently unavailable.””
I laughed.
“That’s a polite way to say it.””
Detective Cole didn’t react.
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of documents.
Medical records.
Lab reports.
Photos.
And one name repeated over and over.
Emma Mercer.
My daughter’s name.
I felt sick.
“How did she get these?””
“We’re investigating.””
“No.””
I pointed at the papers.
“How did she get medical records for my daughter?””
Detective Cole looked at me.
“That is one of the things we’re trying to determine.””
I sat back down.
“What did the DNA test say?””
She took a breath.
“The document we found wasn’t an official hospital test.””
“Then what was it?””
“A private test.””
“Done by who?””
“Vanessa.””
I stared.
“She tested my daughter without my permission?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“According to the file date…”
She looked down.
“Six months after Claire died.””
My stomach twisted.
Six months.
Vanessa was already in my life by then.
She was already becoming part of Emma’s world.
And while I thought she was helping me heal…
She was secretly investigating my daughter.
“Why?””
Detective Cole looked at the file.
“That’s the question.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“What?””
“The question is why I didn’t see it.””
She didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
That evening, after Detective Cole left, I sat beside Emma’s bed.
She was asleep.
One arm wrapped around Bunny.
The other resting on top of the blanket.
I watched her breathing.
Small.
Steady.
Safe.
I needed that reminder.
Because every adult conversation around her had turned her into something else.
A mystery.
A problem.
A secret.
But she wasn’t any of those things.
She was Emma.
My daughter.
The little girl who hated broccoli.
The little girl who cried when butterflies flew away because she thought they got lost.
The little girl who still believed stuffed animals had feelings.
I touched her hair.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came out quietly.
I didn’t know if I was apologizing for Vanessa.
For Claire.
For myself.
Maybe all of it.
Emma stirred.
“Daddy?””
I froze.
“Hey.””
“Are you sad?””
I smiled weakly.
“No.””
She opened one eye.
“You’re doing the face.””
“What face?””
“The face when you’re sad but say you’re not.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because that was something Claire used to say.
Claire always knew.
“You remember Mommy saying that?””
Emma nodded.
“She said you forget your face tells the truth.””
My chest tightened.
I looked away.
“Emma?””
“Yeah?””
“Did Mommy ever talk about Vanessa?””
The room became quiet.
Too quiet.
Emma hugged Bunny.
“She didn’t like her.””
“Why?””
“She said Vanessa was lonely.””
I frowned.
“Lonely?””
Emma nodded.
“She said lonely people sometimes do bad things because they want someone to stay.””
I felt a chill.
Claire knew.
She knew something was wrong.
But she also understood something I had forgotten.
People are complicated.
Even dangerous people.
“What else did Mommy say?””
Emma thought.
“She said Vanessa looked at me like she was looking for something.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What does that mean?””
Emma shrugged.
“I don’t know.””
Then she looked at me.
“But Mommy said she wasn’t my mommy.””
I froze.
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
The words felt heavier than they should.
“She said that?””
Emma nodded.
“Before she died.””
I sat completely still.
“What?””
Emma’s face changed.
Like she realized she had said something important.
“Daddy…”
“When did she say that?””
Emma looked scared.
“I don’t remember.””
I softened my voice.
“It’s okay.””
“She told me not to tell.””
My blood went cold.
“Why?””
“Because she said you would get angry.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Emma.””
She stared at me.
“I’m not angry at you.””
“Mommy said secrets can hurt people.””
My eyes filled.
“She was right.””
The next morning, I went through Claire’s old files again.
This time, I wasn’t looking for Vanessa.
I was looking for Emma.
For anything.
Any clue.
Any reason Vanessa believed something about my daughter.
Hours passed.
Nothing.
Then I found a folder hidden inside another folder.
The name was simple.
*Hospital*
Inside were photos.
The day Emma was born.
I opened the first image.
Claire smiling.
Exhausted.
Happy.
Holding Emma.
The next image was a document.
A birth record.
I read it carefully.
Everything looked normal.
Until I saw something.
A correction.
A small note.
*Updated following administrative review.*
I frowned.
Why would a birth record need updating?
I opened another file.
A hospital communication.
The date was three days after Emma’s birth.
The message was from the hospital administration.
*Regarding discrepancy in newborn identification records.*
My heart started beating faster.
I kept reading.
*A temporary documentation error occurred during transfer. Correction has been completed.*
Temporary error.
That sounded harmless.
Until I saw the next line.
*Two newborn files were briefly connected during the review process.*
I stopped.
Two newborn files.
I read it again.
Two newborn files.
My hands went cold.
I grabbed my phone.
I called the hospital number listed.
After several transfers, I reached records.
“Can you tell me about an administrative review from eight years ago?””
“I’m sorry, sir. We would need authorization.””
“It concerns my daughter.””
“Name?””
“Emma Mercer.””
A pause.
Then:
“Mr. Mercer, those records are restricted.””
“Why?””
“I can’t discuss that.””
“Please.””
“I’m sorry.””
I lowered my voice.
“Someone may have changed my daughter’s records.””
The person on the line became quiet.
“Sir…”
“What?””
“I can’t confirm anything.””
“But?””
Another pause.
Then the person said:
“If you believe there is an issue, you should request a legal review.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Legal review.
Restricted records.
Two newborn files.
I felt like I was standing at the edge of a cliff.
And I didn’t know what was below.
That afternoon, Detective Cole called.
“I found Vanessa.””
I stood immediately.
“Where?””
“She contacted an attorney.””
“Is she there?””
“No.””
“Then you didn’t find her.””
“She’s communicating.””
I gripped the phone.
“What did she say?””
“She wants to meet.””
I laughed.
“She wants to meet?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Detective Cole hesitated.
“She says she can explain everything.””
I looked toward Emma’s room.
“No.””
“Mr. Mercer—”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“She doesn’t get to walk back in here and tell me a story.””
“She may have information.””
“So do serial liars.””
Detective Cole was quiet.
Then she said:
“You need to hear her.””
I didn’t like that answer.
But I understood it.
Because answers mattered.
Even when they came from someone you hated.
“When?””
“Tonight.””
“Where?””
“She chose the location.””
I frowned.
“Of course she did.””
The meeting place was an old park near the river.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere safe.
At least that was what Detective Cole said.
Vanessa was already there.
She looked different.
Not because she had changed.
Because I had.
Before, I saw my wife.
Now I saw a stranger wearing her face.
She stood when I approached.
“Daniel.””
I stopped several feet away.
“Don’t.””
Her expression changed.
Pain.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You have no idea.””
“I do.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say that.””
She looked down.
“I know what you found.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“The cameras?””
“Yes.””
“The notes?””
“Yes.””
“The DNA files?””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You found those.””
I stared.
“So they’re real.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Answer me.””
She was quiet.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word hit me.
I expected denial.
I expected excuses.
I wasn’t ready for the truth.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I needed to know.””
“Know what?””
She looked at me.
“Whether Emma was mine.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel…”
“Don’t say my daughter’s name like you have any right.””
“She is my daughter.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
I stepped back.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time since I met her…
She looked afraid.
“She’s my daughter.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She is.””
“No.””
“She was born eight years ago.””
“Stop.””
“She was taken from me.””
My heart pounded.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Claire knew.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“What?””
“Claire knew.””
“You’re saying Claire stole a child?””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I’m saying Emma wasn’t supposed to be Claire’s daughter.””
I stared.
My entire body went numb.
“Who was she supposed to be?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Mine.””
The river moved behind us.
Cars passed on the road.
People walked by.
The world continued.
But mine had stopped.
Because the woman I believed had hurt my daughter was now claiming she had lost her.
And before I could answer…
Vanessa said the words that made everything worse.
“Daniel…”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Claire knew Emma was my biological daughter.””
My breath caught.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“And she took her from me.””
