Chapter 6: The Message From Beyond the Grave
“Claire.””
Olivia’s voice echoed through the phone.
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.
Grief does strange things to people.
It makes you search for impossible explanations.
It makes you hear the voice of someone you lost in the sound of a stranger.
But I knew what Olivia said.
Claire.
Not Vanessa.
Not a hacker.
Not some unknown person.
Claire.
“How?”” I whispered.
My eyes stayed locked on the computer screen.
The video was still frozen.
My wife’s face was still there.
A face I had not seen except in memories and photographs for almost two years.
“How could Claire send it?””
Olivia was silent.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, that’s impossible.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“She’s dead.””
“I know.””
“She couldn’t send me anything.””
“I know.””
“Then explain it.””
Olivia breathed in slowly.
“She didn’t send it after she died.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Claire created it before.””
I stared at the computer.
The file name.
CLAIRE_FINAL.
“She recorded it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did it appear now?””
Another pause.
A pause that made my chest tighten.
“Because she set it up.””
I stood there in the dark office.
Unable to process what I was hearing.
“Set it up how?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“You called me saying you knew.””
“I know enough.””
“Then tell me.””
Olivia’s voice became quieter.
“Claire was preparing for the possibility that something would happen to her.””
I closed my eyes.
The sentence hurt.
Because I realized something.
My wife had been afraid.
And while she was afraid, I was living normally.
Going to work.
Planning dinners.
Making jokes.
Assuming tomorrow would always come.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she thought telling you would put you in danger.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Put me in danger?””
“Yes.””
“Olivia, I was her husband.””
“I know.””
“I deserved to know.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“But Claire was trying to protect you.””
I looked at the computer.
At the woman who had spent her final days preparing warnings instead of enjoying her life.
“Tell me everything.””
Olivia was quiet.
Then she said:
“Before I do, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Claire didn’t trust anyone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Not even me?””
“She trusted you.””
“Then who?””
Olivia whispered:
“Everyone else.””
I drove to Olivia’s house before sunrise.
I didn’t want to wait.
I couldn’t.
Every second I spent sitting still felt like another second Vanessa had an advantage.
Emma was sleeping at home with my sister, who had arrived after I called her.
I hated leaving my daughter.
But I needed answers.
Real answers.
Not guesses.
Not theories.
When Olivia opened the door, she looked like she hadn’t slept.
Neither had I.
“Come in.””
Her house was small and quiet.
Different from mine.
No memories on the walls.
No photographs everywhere.
It felt like a place where someone lived alone because they were afraid to let anyone get close.
We sat at the kitchen table.
The same place where she had probably replayed this conversation in her mind hundreds of times.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“You already said that.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me why you didn’t.””
She looked down.
“Because Claire asked me not to.””
I stared.
“She asked you to keep her secrets?””
“Yes.””
“Even from me?””
“Yes.””
That hurt.
More than I expected.
Olivia noticed.
“I’m sorry.””
“Why?””
“Because I know what it feels like to think someone you love didn’t trust you.””
I looked at her.
“But she did trust me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide things?””
“Because Claire knew you would try to fix it.””
I frowned.
“And?””
“And Vanessa was counting on that.””
I said nothing.
Olivia continued.
“Claire told me something once.””
“What?””
“She said, ‘Daniel sees broken things and wants to repair them. That’s why I love him. But it’s also why I’m afraid for him.’”
My throat tightened.
Because that sounded exactly like Claire.
She always saw the best parts of me.
Even the parts that hurt me.
“What did Vanessa want?””
Olivia looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.””
“You must have an idea.””
“I do.””
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
Then:
“I think she wanted Claire’s life.””
The words sounded familiar.
Because Claire had written the same thing.
“She wanted my family.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Because Vanessa didn’t have one.””
She showed me a box.
It was hidden in a closet.
Old.
Dusty.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Notes.
The kind of things people collect when they are trying to understand something they cannot explain.
“Claire gave these to me two weeks before she died.””
I stared.
“She knew?””
“She suspected.””
“Suspected what?””
“That Vanessa had been lying about who she was.””
Olivia handed me a photograph.
It was the same picture I had found on Claire’s computer.
Vanessa.
And another woman.
“Who is she?””
Olivia looked uncomfortable.
“Her name is Rachel Whitmore.””
“Relation?””
“She was Vanessa’s older sister.””
I looked closer.
The two women looked nothing alike.
Rachel was smiling.
Vanessa looked younger.
Almost happy.
“What happened to her?””
Olivia swallowed.
“She died.””
“When?””
“Eight years ago.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“Nobody really knows.””
I frowned.
“People don’t just disappear.””
“She didn’t disappear.””
Olivia folded her hands.
“She died in a house fire.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And?””
“And Vanessa was the only person inside.””
Silence.
I stared at the photograph.
“Was she investigated?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“Officials ruled it accidental.””
“But?””
Olivia looked at me.
“But Claire found inconsistencies.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What kind?””
“She found reports.””
“From where?””
“Insurance records. Local news. Court documents.””
I looked through the papers.
Most were copies.
Old.
Some barely readable.
Then I saw a sentence.
*Primary beneficiary changed three weeks before incident.*
My stomach dropped.
“Rachel changed her life insurance?””
Olivia nodded.
“Who was the beneficiary?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
I spent the next hour reading everything.
The more I learned, the worse it became.
Vanessa wasn’t just a woman with a strange past.
She was a woman who appeared wherever people had something she wanted.
Money.
Security.
A family.
A future.
But there was still one question I couldn’t answer.
Why me?
“Olivia.””
“Yes?””
“Why did Vanessa choose me?””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not true.””
She looked away.
“You know something.””
A long silence.
Then she sighed.
“Claire found something.””
“What?””
“She found out Vanessa knew about you before you met.””
I already knew that.
But hearing it again still hurt.
“How?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Through Claire.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Vanessa didn’t discover you randomly.””
“What are you saying?””
“She was following Claire.””
The room went quiet.
“Why?””
Olivia looked down.
“Because Claire had something Vanessa wanted.””
“What?””
She reached into the box.
Pulled out another photograph.
My breath stopped.
It was Claire.
Holding Emma.
Standing outside a hospital.
But behind them…
Was Vanessa.
Watching.
Not smiling.
Not talking.
Just watching.
The date on the back was written in Claire’s handwriting.
*Three days after Emma was born.*
I stared at it.
“No.””
Olivia nodded.
“Yes.””
“Vanessa was there?””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Olivia whispered:
“That’s what Claire was trying to find out.””
When I returned home, it was almost noon.
Emma was sitting at the kitchen table coloring.
The second she saw me, she ran over.
“Daddy!””
I caught her.
Held her.
For a few seconds, I forgot everything.
The cameras.
The lies.
The fear.
Just my daughter.
My responsibility.
“Did you find answers?”” she asked.
I froze.
Children notice everything.
Even when adults try to hide it.
“Some.””
“Are they bad?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
It was a lie.
But this time, I told it for protection.
Not denial.
She hugged me tighter.
“I missed you.””
“I missed you too.””
After lunch, I checked the house.
Every room.
Every corner.
I didn’t trust walls anymore.
I didn’t trust doors.
I didn’t trust silence.
Then I noticed something.
The office.
The computer.
The video.
The file.
It was gone.
I rushed inside.
The computer was open.
The folder remained.
But CLAIRE_FINAL had disappeared.
I checked again.
Nothing.
My heart started pounding.
Someone had deleted it.
Someone had accessed my computer.
But how?
The police had taken the cameras.
The house was locked.
I grabbed my phone.
Then stopped.
A notification appeared.
An email.
No sender.
No subject.
One attachment.
A video.
My hands went cold.
I clicked it.
The screen loaded.
A woman appeared.
Not Claire.
Not Vanessa.
A stranger.
An older woman.
She looked terrified.
She stared directly into the camera.
“If Daniel Mercer is watching this…”
She paused.
“I need him to know the truth about Claire’s death.””
I leaned closer.
The woman swallowed.
“My name is Evelyn Whitmore.””
My blood ran cold.
Whitmore.
Vanessa’s old last name.
The woman continued.
“I am Vanessa’s mother.””
I stopped breathing.
She looked behind her.
Like she was afraid someone would walk in.
“Daniel, if you found Claire’s video, then Vanessa failed to stop you.””
My heart pounded.
“Please listen carefully.””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Claire was right about one thing.””
She leaned closer.
“Vanessa did not enter your life by accident.””
A pause.
Then:
“But Claire was wrong about why.””
I stared at the screen.
“What?””
The woman whispered:
“Vanessa wasn’t trying to replace Claire.””
The video glitched.
Then Evelyn said the words that changed everything.
“She was trying to find the daughter she lost.””
The screen went black.
I stood frozen.
Because there was only one daughter in my life.
One little girl.
One child Vanessa had been obsessed with.
Emma.
My phone rang.
Detective Cole.
I answered immediately.
“Detective?””
Her voice was urgent.
“Mr. Mercer, where are you?””
“At home.””
“Is Emma with you?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Listen to me carefully.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
“We received the DNA results from the files found in Vanessa’s records.””
I gripped the phone.
“DNA?””
“Yes.””
“Whose?””
Silence.
Then Detective Cole said:
“Your daughter’s.””
I looked toward the kitchen.
Emma was sitting there drawing.
My heart stopped.
“Why do you have my daughter’s DNA?””
Her voice became lower.
“Daniel…”
A pause.
“The records indicate Vanessa believed Emma was not Claire’s daughter.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
Detective Cole continued:
“And there’s something else.””
“What?””
“The records weren’t created recently.””
I looked at Emma.
At the little girl who had just asked me if she was bad.
Detective Cole whispered:
“They were created before Emma was born.””
My phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Before Emma was born.
Before Claire died.
Before Vanessa entered my life.
May you like
Then who was Vanessa?
And why had she been watching my daughter from the beginning?
