Surprise

Chapter 5

I forwarded the messages to David before sunrise.

He called immediately.

"Marcus, do not respond."

"I want to know who sent them."

"We'll preserve the messages and report the threats appropriately."

I looked at Lily sleeping beside me.

"Someone is using her mother's necklace to threaten me."

"I understand."

"No, David. That necklace is one of the few things Lily has left from Danielle."

His voice softened.

"I know. But reacting impulsively could put both of you at greater risk."

I closed my eyes.

He was right.

And I hated that he was right.

By nine, Raymond had reviewed the building's security records.

Vanessa had left the penthouse the previous night.

She had gone to a luxury hotel downtown.

She was accompanied by a man Raymond recognized.

Dr. Adrian Wells.

The same man whose name had appeared on her phone.

Raymond showed me a photograph from the public hotel entrance.

Vanessa stood beside him.

They appeared to be arguing.

I stared at the image.

"Who is this man?"

Raymond opened a folder.

"He's a private educational consultant. He works with several residential programs."

I frowned.

"Does he work for Willow Creek?"

"He has referred families there."

My stomach tightened.

"Find out everything you legally can."

Raymond nodded.

I called David again.

He had already contacted the school.

The administrator confirmed that Vanessa had submitted an inquiry and an application.

But no placement had been approved.

No child had been admitted.

And the school had not accepted the electronic signature as sufficient authorization.

I exhaled.

"So Lily wasn't scheduled to leave?"

"Not through a completed enrollment," David said. "But the application shows intent, and we're preserving it."

I looked at the document again.

Vanessa had described Lily as unstable.

Dangerous.

Unable to bond.

My gentle little girl.

I felt sick.

That afternoon, I met with Dr. Harris.

She had reviewed the information I was authorized to share.

She looked concerned.

"Marcus, Lily needs a stable environment. Have you considered staying somewhere else temporarily?"

I shook my head.

"This is her home."

"I understand. But some spaces may trigger frightening memories."

I thought about the storage room.

The piano.

The hallway.

The bowl.

Every place I loved now carried something terrible.

I looked at her.

"What would you recommend?"

"Give her choices. Small, safe choices. Let her decide where she feels comfortable."

That evening, I asked Lily if she wanted to stay in the penthouse or spend a few nights at our family's lake house.

Her eyes widened.

"The lake house?"

I nodded.

"Just you, me, and Nia if she'd like to come."

Lily thought for a moment.

"Will Vanessa know where we are?"

My chest tightened.

"We'll make sure you're safe."

She whispered, "Then I want to go."

I nodded.

"Okay, princess."

Nia agreed to accompany us.

Raymond arranged transportation.

We left the penthouse that night.

Lily sat beside me in the car.

She held her rabbit tightly.

When the building disappeared behind us, she finally relaxed.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Can we have pancakes at the lake?"

I smiled.

"Every morning if you want."

She giggled.

It was the first real laugh I'd heard from her in days.

I nearly cried.

The lake house was quiet.

There were trees behind the property and a wooden dock stretching into the water.

Danielle and I had bought it before Lily was born.

We spent our last happy summer there.

When Lily stepped inside, she looked around.

Then she pointed toward the family photographs.

"Mommy!"

I followed her gaze.

A picture of Danielle stood on the mantel.

She was smiling beside the lake.

Lily ran toward it.

"Hi, Mommy."

I felt tears fill my eyes.

She touched the frame.

Then she turned to me.

"Can this stay in my room?"

"Of course."

That night, Lily slept peacefully.

But I didn't.

At eleven, David called.

"Marcus, we identified the consultant."

I sat upright.

"Adrian Wells?"

"Yes. We've learned that Vanessa has been communicating with him about Lily for several months."

My stomach tightened.

"Months?"

"Since shortly after your wedding."

I stared toward the hallway.

"Why?"

"Some emails suggest Vanessa wanted a professional opinion supporting a claim that Lily needed to live away from home."

I felt cold.

"Did he ever examine Lily?"

"Not according to the records we've received so far."

"Then how could he support anything?"

"That's one of the questions we're investigating."

I gripped the phone.

David continued.

"There's another concern. Vanessa appears to have sent him private information about Lily, including medical details."

I closed my eyes.

"Without my permission?"

"That's what we're looking into."

I thought about how often Vanessa had offered to manage appointments.

How she insisted she was helping.

How grateful I had been.

I felt foolish.

But before I could speak, David said something else.

"Marcus, did Vanessa ever ask you to change Lily's inheritance arrangements?"

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"Did she ask about Danielle's estate?"

I remembered a conversation from three months earlier.

Vanessa had been sitting beside me after dinner.

She asked whether Lily would inherit everything if something happened to me.

I told her Danielle had left a trust for our daughter.

Vanessa smiled.

Then she asked who controlled it.

At the time, I thought she was simply curious.

Now I felt sick.

"David, why are you asking?"

He paused.

"Because one of the documents Vanessa discussed with Wells refers to Lily's trust."

I stood.

"What document?"

"We haven't obtained the complete copy yet."

I looked toward Lily's bedroom.

She was sleeping peacefully.

Her rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

"What does my daughter's trust have to do with sending her away?"

David's voice was serious.

"That's exactly what we need to find out."

Then he added one more sentence.

"Marcus, until we know more, I strongly recommend you review every person who has access to Lily's financial and medical information."

I stood in the darkness.

My wife had humiliated my daughter.

Locked her in a storage room.

Tried to send her away.

And now her name was appearing in conversations about Lily's inheritance.

I had thought the cruelty was personal.

May you like

But suddenly, I feared there might be money behind it.

And that made everything even more terrifying.
