Chapter 9: The Brother Hidden in the Shadows
The rain kept falling.
Heavy.
Relentless.
Like the sky itself was trying to wash away everything that had been buried beneath Hawthorne Estate.
But some secrets did not disappear with rain.
Some secrets only became visible.
I stared at Adrian Vale.
My mind struggled to process the words.
*Your brother was the one who saved you.*
A pause.
*Your brother was also the one who betrayed you.*
Both sentences could not exist together.
Not about the same person.
Not about someone who shared my blood.
I looked at Amelia.
“Is it true?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Mom.””
The word felt strange.
I had spent my entire life without being able to say it.
Now I could.
And somehow, it hurt more.
“Is Daniel alive?””
Amelia’s face crumpled.
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
Almost like she was afraid the world would hear.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I thought I had lost everyone.
My father.
My mother.
My childhood.
Now I found out I had a brother.
A person who had existed beside my memories.
A person I should have known.
A person who knew me.
And I didn’t know him.
“Where is he?””
Amelia looked at Adrian.
That made my anger rise.
“Why are you looking at him?””
She whispered:
“Because Daniel is with him.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I looked at Adrian.
“You know where he is?””
“Yes.””
“Bring him here.””
Adrian smiled.
“You still think you can demand answers.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m not asking.””
His smile faded slightly.
Good.
“You’ve taken enough from me.””
He tilted his head.
“Have I?””
I stared at him.
“You erased my memories.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I removed something that was destroying you.””
I hated how calm he remained.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“You don’t get to decide what happens to me.””
Adrian looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said:
“You sound exactly like your father.””
I didn’t respond.
Because everyone kept saying that.
Like it was supposed to explain something.
Like being like my father was both a compliment and a warning.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“This ends tonight.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You said that twenty years ago.””
Her face changed.
A memory.
A wound.
Something unfinished.
“You were supposed to be gone.””
He smiled.
“And you were supposed to protect Amelia.””
Evelyn went silent.
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Neither answered.
I raised my voice.
“What happened?””
Finally, Evelyn spoke.
“Daniel found out Adrian was manipulating both families.””
I looked at her.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning Adrian wasn’t working alone.””
The garden became still.
Victor frowned.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I’m saying someone else helped him.””
Again.
The same mystery.
The same invisible person.
The same shadow behind everything.
I looked at Adrian.
“Who?””
He smiled.
“You’re finally asking the right question.””
I hated that.
I hated that every answer from him came with satisfaction.
Like he enjoyed watching us suffer.
“Tell me.””
He looked at the mansion.
Then back at me.
“The person who betrayed your family was someone who had access to everything.””
“The documents?””
“Yes.””
“The security?””
“Yes.””
“The information about my parents?””
“Yes.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Victor.
Nobody moved.
Victor’s face went pale.
“No.””
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.””
I looked at Victor.
The world seemed to tilt.
“Victor?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why is he looking at you?””
Victor turned toward Adrian.
“You don’t get to do this.””
“Do what?””
“Use the truth to hide your own crimes.””
Adrian laughed.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“The reason your father never trusted him.””
I stared at Victor.
“Did you betray my parents?””
Victor’s face showed pain.
“No.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence was devastating.
I stepped back.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody ever tells me anything until they’re forced.””
Victor looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It isn’t.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was supposed to meet your father that night.””
“Why?””
“He wanted to give me the evidence.””
“The evidence against Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“Did you take it?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Victor looked at the ground.
“Daniel took it.””
Everyone froze.
I stared.
“My brother?””
Victor nodded.
“He was fifteen.””
The age made my chest hurt.
Fifteen.
A child.
“He followed your father.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knew something was wrong.””
Amelia covered her mouth.
Victor continued.
“He found the documents before anyone else.””
“And?””
“He hid them.””
“Where?””
Victor looked at the key in my hand.
“Somewhere even Adrian couldn’t find.””
My fingers tightened around it.
“The room.””
Victor nodded.
“The original evidence room.””
Adrian smiled.
“Your father built a game.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He knew everyone around him had secrets.””
He stepped closer.
“So he created a final test.””
“A test?””
“Yes.””
He looked at the key.
“He hid the evidence somewhere only someone who truly loved the family would find.””
I stared.
“And Daniel found it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he betray me?””
Adrian looked at Amelia.
She shook her head.
“No.””
I turned.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel didn’t betray you.””
“Then why does Adrian say he did?””
“Because Adrian wants you to believe that.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Why?””
“Because your brother is the only person who can expose me.””
That was the first thing Adrian said that sounded like fear.
Not confidence.
Fear.
I noticed.
And so did Evelyn.
“Where is Daniel?””
Adrian smiled.
“Close.””
“Where?””
“Closer than you think.””
Before I could ask more, the old mansion lights flickered.
Everyone looked toward the house.
Then the security cameras around the garden turned on.
One by one.
Every screen showed the same image.
A room.
A hidden room.
A man sitting inside.
My breath stopped.
The camera moved closer.
The man looked up.
Older.
Different.
But I knew.
Somehow, I knew.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
A face I had never seen.
But somehow remembered.
Daniel.
My brother.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
“Clara.””
I couldn’t move.
The speakers carried his voice across the garden.
“I’m sorry.””
My eyes filled before I even realized it.
I had spent years missing people I thought were gone.
And now one of them was alive.
“Daniel?””
His face changed.
Pain.
“You shouldn’t have found this place.””
I stepped toward the screen.
“Where are you?””
He looked away.
“Don’t listen to Adrian.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“He’s lying.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Daniel continued.
“Everything he told you tonight was designed to make you doubt everyone.””
The screen flickered.
“Mom.””
Amelia stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
She started crying.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“Because I wasn’t the only one who disappeared.””
The screen glitched.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Clara, there’s something you need to know.””
A loud crack interrupted him.
The image distorted.
Someone was interfering with the signal.
Adrian looked up.
For the first time all night…
He looked angry.
Daniel spoke faster.
“The person who erased your memories wasn’t Adrian.””
Everyone froze.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“It was—”
The screen went black.
Silence.
Then every light in the garden turned off.
Darkness.
Complete darkness.
I heard movement.
A struggle.
Someone shouted.
Then a gunshot echoed from inside the mansion.
Lily screamed.
Evelyn grabbed her.
Detective Reed shouted for everyone to stay down.
I stood frozen.
Because in the darkness, someone whispered beside me.
A voice I didn’t recognize.
But one sentence I would never forget.
“Your brother was trying to warn you.””
I turned.
“Who are you?””
The voice answered:
“The person who knows what really happened that night.””
The lights came back.
And Adrian Vale was gone.
But lying on the wet grass where he had been standing…
Was a blood-stained envelope.
With my name written on it.
Again.
I picked it up slowly.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not old.
Not damaged.
Taken tonight.
A picture of me standing in the garden.
But the person who took it was standing behind me.
Close enough to touch me.
The back of the photograph contained one sentence.
*Clara, the person you trust most is the one who has been watching you all along.*
And underneath it was a name.
A name that made Evelyn whisper:
May you like
“No…”
Because it belonged to someone standing beside me.
