Chapter 8: The Key Beneath the Oldest Tree
The message on the paper was impossible.
Not because of what it said.
Because of when it appeared.
I had been holding that note for less than a minute.
Less than a minute.
There was no time for someone to secretly write on it.
No time for ink to dry.
No time for anyone to get close enough.
Yet there it was.
A sentence that seemed to appear from nowhere.
*I know you found this.*
My fingers loosened.
The paper almost fell.
Detective Reed immediately noticed.
“Are you okay?””
I didn’t answer.
I stared at the handwriting.
Two different styles.
My father’s writing was familiar.
The second message was sharper.
More aggressive.
Like whoever wrote it wasn’t leaving a clue.
They were leaving a warning.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Let me see that.””
I pulled it away.
“No.””
She stopped.
A flash of hurt crossed her face.
But I couldn’t ignore what was happening anymore.
Every time someone asked me to trust them, I lost something.
My memories.
My childhood.
My understanding of my own family.
I looked at everyone in the room.
Evelyn.
Victor.
Amelia.
Adrian somewhere inside the mansion.
Even Detective Reed.
Everyone had information I didn’t.
Everyone had been deciding when I was ready.
I was done being the last person to know.
“Clara,” Amelia whispered.
I looked at her.
“I need the truth.””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t.””
I held up the paper.
“You all knew my father left something behind.””
Nobody denied it.
“You knew there was a key.””
Silence.
“You knew Adrian was coming back.””
More silence.
“And somehow, every single one of you thought keeping me in the dark was protecting me.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Was it?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I turned toward the door.
“Where is the tree?””
Evelyn immediately answered.
“The northern garden.””
Detective Reed frowned.
“Garden?””
Evelyn nodded.
“The oldest part of the estate.””
I looked at her.
“The place where your family started.””
“Yes.””
I walked toward the exit.
Victor stepped in front of me.
“No.””
I stopped.
“You too?””
“You don’t understand.””
“That sentence should be written on the walls of this house.””
Victor ignored my anger.
“You can’t go outside.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian wants you to.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
“And because everything tonight has been arranged.””
I looked around.
“Isn’t that what this entire family does?””
Victor’s face tightened.
“Clara.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the hidden hallway.
“A child was hidden behind a wall.””
I pointed toward Amelia.
“My mother disappeared.””
I pointed toward the papers.
“My memories were destroyed.””
Then I looked at him.
“I am done being afraid of a plan I don’t understand.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Evelyn said:
“Take me with you.””
Everyone looked at her.
Even Victor.
I frowned.
“You?””
She nodded.
“I owe you the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“You owe me a lot more than that.””
“I know.””
There was no defense in her voice.
Just acceptance.
I looked at Amelia.
She stepped forward.
“I’m coming too.””
My chest tightened.
Part of me wanted to say no.
Part of me wanted to walk away from all of them.
But the truth was simple.
I needed answers.
And every answer was somewhere in this mansion.
“Fine.””
I looked at Lily.
“But she stays with me.””
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew.
Lily was the only innocent person in the room.
The northern garden was hidden behind the oldest section of the mansion.
Most guests never saw it.
The party area was designed to impress.
This place was designed to be forgotten.
The path was covered with fallen leaves.
The stone statues were cracked.
The flowers had grown wild.
The rain made everything smell like earth and old memories.
At the center of the garden stood a massive tree.
Older than the mansion itself.
Its branches stretched across the sky like twisted fingers.
Lily stopped walking.
“That’s it.””
I looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
She nodded.
“My mom brought me here once.””
Evelyn looked surprised.
“When?””
Lily looked down.
“Before she disappeared.””
Nobody moved.
Amelia stepped closer.
“She brought you here?””
Lily nodded.
“She said this tree remembered everything.””
The words gave me chills.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
She stared at the tree.
“My father planted it.””
“The founder?””
“Yes.””
She walked closer.
“He believed trees were the only things in the world that saw generations come and go without changing sides.””
“That sounds poetic.””
“It was.””
She touched the bark.
“My family built everything around this tree.””
I looked at the ground.
“So where is the key?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily pointed.
“Over there.””
A few feet away from the tree was a stone bench.
Old.
Covered in moss.
I walked toward it.
Underneath the bench was a small metal plate.
I wiped away the dirt.
There was a symbol engraved into it.
A circle.
With three lines crossing through the center.
I recognized it.
From the necklace.
“The pendant.””
Amelia handed me the necklace.
I placed it over the symbol.
It fit perfectly.
A small click sounded.
The stone bench shifted.
Everyone froze.
The seat opened slightly, revealing a hidden compartment beneath.
Inside was a small wooden box.
I reached for it.
But before I touched it, Evelyn grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stared at the box.
“Your father put that there.””
“Yes.””
“Then he wanted you to find it.””
“Yes.””
Her expression changed.
“And that means he wanted Adrian to find it too.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Victor stepped closer.
“Think about it.””
He looked at the box.
“Adrian knew about the key.””
“So?””
“So why would he let us come here?””
The question bothered me.
Because he was right.
Adrian had controlled everything.
The reporters.
The police.
The accusations.
He wanted me searching.
But why?
I slowly reached for the box.
“We open it.””
Nobody stopped me.
Inside was a small brass key.
And a letter.
My name was written on the envelope.
Again.
I opened it.
The handwriting was my father’s.
*Clara,*
My heart tightened.
Reading my father’s words felt impossible.
Like hearing a voice from a dream.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I hoped.*
I swallowed.
*But I need you to understand something. Everyone will tell you different versions of what happened. Some will lie to hurt you. Some will lie to protect you.*
I looked up.
That was exactly what happened.
*The person you should fear most is not the one who hates you. It is the one who convinces you they are saving you.*
My eyes moved slowly.
*The key opens the room where the original evidence is hidden.*
A room.
Of course.
Another hidden room.
*But do not trust anyone who follows you there.*
I stopped.
A cold feeling moved through me.
I looked around.
Evelyn.
Victor.
Amelia.
The people standing beside me.
*Because the person who betrayed us is still alive.*
The letter ended there.
No name.
No explanation.
Just one final sentence.
*And Clara, if Amelia is with you when you read this, ask her why she never told you about your brother.*
The world went silent.
My eyes lifted slowly.
“Brother?””
Amelia froze.
Nobody moved.
Lily looked confused.
“Brother?””
I stared at my mother.
“What does he mean?””
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Clara…”
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“No more.””
Rain fell harder around us.
“Who is my brother?””
Amelia looked at Evelyn.
Then Victor.
Then me.
And whispered:
“He was five years older than you.””
My heart raced.
“What was his name?””
She closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
I felt dizzy.
“I had a brother?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Silence.
That silence was worse than any answer.
“Where is he?””
Amelia’s voice broke.
“He died.””
I stared.
“When?””
“Before you lost your memories.””
My breathing became shallow.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
“My mom said Daniel didn’t die.””
Everyone turned.
Amelia went pale.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked terrified.
“She said Daniel was alive.””
The garden became completely silent.
Amelia stepped toward her.
“Lily.””
“She said he was the only one who knew the truth.””
I looked at Amelia.
“You told her?””
Amelia shook her head.
“No.””
“Then how did she know?””
A sound came from behind us.
A slow clap.
Everyone turned.
Adrian stood at the edge of the garden.
Rain falling on his expensive suit.
Smiling.
“You really are your father’s daughter.””
Evelyn immediately moved in front of me.
“Stay away.””
Adrian ignored her.
He looked at the letter in my hand.
“You found it.””
I tightened my grip.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Adrian smiled.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
“On whether you want the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“I want all of it.””
He nodded.
“Good.””
Then he looked at Amelia.
“Because your mother has been lying about him for twenty years.””
Amelia whispered:
“Don’t.””
Adrian continued.
“Daniel didn’t die.””
My heart stopped.
“Then where is he?””
Adrian looked directly at me.
And said:
“He’s the reason you forgot everything.””
The rain seemed louder.
The mansion behind us seemed darker.
And then Adrian delivered the truth that shattered the last piece of my childhood.
“Your brother was the one who saved you.””
May you like
A pause.
“Your brother was also the one who betrayed you.””
