Chapter 7: The Heir Who Was Never Meant to Exist

Dominic Vale had spent forty-three years believing he knew exactly who he was.

A businessman.

A son.

An heir.

A man who inherited a name and built it into something larger than anyone expected.

Every decision he made.

Every risk he took.

Every enemy he created.

It all came from one foundation.

The belief that he was Richard Vale’s son.

But the document in his hands destroyed that foundation in a single sentence.

*Dominic Vale is not the biological son of Richard Vale.*

He read it again.

Then again.

As if the words might rearrange themselves into something less impossible.

They didn’t.

The room remained silent.

Vincent Hale stood behind him, carefully watching.

Not because he feared Dominic’s anger.

Because he feared what happened when Dominic became quiet.

The loud version of Dominic Vale was dangerous.

The silent version was worse.

“Close the door.””

Vincent did.

Dominic placed the file on the table.

“Who else knows?””

Vincent looked at the document.

“I don’t know.””

“Find out.””

“Yes.””

Dominic turned another page.

The file was old.

The paper had yellowed.

The handwriting belonged to someone from decades ago.

His father.

Richard Vale.

A man who had been dead for fifteen years.

A man who apparently took secrets to the grave.

The report continued.

*Subject demonstrated high compatibility with Vale genetic markers but did not match paternal lineage.*

Dominic stared.

High compatibility.

Not a son.

Not unrelated.

Something between.

Something complicated.

He kept reading.

*Recommendation: Maintain public inheritance status. Biological clarification unnecessary unless succession conflict arises.*

Dominic stopped.

Succession conflict.

His entire life had been treated like a business strategy.

Not a family.

Not a child.

A strategy.

“Dominic.””

Vincent’s voice was careful.

“What?””

“Do you want me to call Dr. Bennett?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she doesn’t have this answer.””

Dominic closed the file.

“Someone else does.””

Vincent understood immediately.

“Adrian.””

Dominic nodded.

Because Adrian had known.

Or at least he knew enough.

The photograph.

The hospital records.

The warnings.

The way he spoke about bloodlines.

Adrian wasn’t discovering secrets.

He was protecting them.

Or using them.

Adrian Vale was waiting when Dominic arrived.

That was the first thing Dominic noticed.

Not the expensive office.

Not the city view.

Not the perfectly arranged desk.

Adrian was waiting.

He had known Dominic would come.

“You found the archive.””

Dominic closed the door behind him.

“You knew about it.””

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Too easy.

Dominic stared.

“How long?””

Adrian walked toward the window.

“Long enough.””

“How long?””

“Since before you became CEO.””

Dominic felt something tighten in his chest.

“You knew I wasn’t Dad’s son?””

Adrian remained silent.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the answer was almost insulting.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You spent my entire life knowing something I didn’t.””

Adrian turned.

“You spent your entire life believing something you wanted to believe.””

The sentence hit.

Not because it was cruel.

Because part of Dominic feared it was true.

“Explain.””

Adrian sighed.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not arrogant.

Not smug.

Tired.

“Our father was obsessed with legacy.””

“Don’t talk about him like he was some victim.””

“He wasn’t.””

Adrian looked away.

“He was a man who believed everything could be controlled.””

Dominic said nothing.

“He couldn’t accept that you were not biologically his.””

“And you could?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“I was eight years old when I found out.””

Dominic froze.

“What?””

“I found the file.””

Adrian laughed softly.

“Ironic, isn’t it?””

“What is?””

“You’re angry because you learned it at forty-three.””

He looked at Dominic.

“I learned it as a child.””

The room became quiet.

Adrian continued.

“I thought you were going to replace me.””

Dominic frowned.

“You hated me because of that?””

“No.””

Adrian looked down.

“I hated that everyone loved you.””

The honesty was unexpected.

“Our father looked at you like you were special.””

“He did?””

“Yes.””

Adrian smiled bitterly.

“Because you were everything he wanted.””

Dominic shook his head.

“He lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“He used me.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re defending him?””

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I’m explaining him.””

Dominic walked closer.

“Who is my biological father?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was the first time he hesitated.

Dominic noticed.

“Who?””

Adrian whispered:

“Your father’s biggest mistake.””

“Name.””

“Thomas Hale.””

The room went still.

Dominic looked confused.

“Hale?””

Adrian nodded.

“Your mother’s security chief.””

Dominic stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Vincent’s father worked for our family.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Adrian looked at him.

“And your mother trusted him.””

The pieces began moving.

A different family history.

A different bloodline.

A different explanation.

Dominic’s entire identity shifted beneath him.

“Does Vincent know?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father erased everything.””

Dominic looked back at the file.

“And Ellie?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

There it was.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Dominic saw it.

“What do you know?””

Adrian didn’t respond.

“What do you know about Ellie?””

“She’s dangerous.””

The answer made Dominic’s face harden.

“She’s four years old.””

“That’s not what I mean.””

“Then explain.””

Adrian walked back to his desk.

“The child isn’t dangerous.””

“Then what is?””

“The truth about her.””

Dominic waited.

Adrian looked at him.

“Ellie is not just a Vale.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the person who fathered her has a connection to the original Vale inheritance.””

Dominic frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

“You don’t know what your father was building.””

“Then tell me.””

Adrian shook his head.

“I can’t.””

Dominic’s voice became colder.

“You can.””

“No.””

A pause.

“Because if I tell you, you’ll do exactly what Ethan did.””

“What?””

“Try to save everyone.””

That night, Dominic found Vincent in the security room.

The older man looked up.

“You found something.””

Dominic stood silently.

Then asked:

“What was your father’s full name?””

Vincent frowned.

“Why?””

“Answer me.””

A long pause.

“Thomas Hale.””

Dominic looked at him.

“Did he ever work for Richard Vale?””

Vincent’s expression changed.

Slowly.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“My entire childhood.””

Dominic walked closer.

“Did he ever mention my mother?””

Vincent became still.

“Dominic.””

“Did he?””

The security chief looked away.

That was the answer.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew something.””

Vincent remained silent.

Dominic’s voice lowered.

“Tell me.””

Vincent took a breath.

“My father disappeared when I was seventeen.””

“Why?””

“He found something.””

“What?””

“He never told me.””

Dominic stared.

“But you knew it involved my family.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you say anything?””

Vincent looked at him.

“Because your father made me promise.””

Dominic laughed once.

No humor.

“Everyone made promises to my father.””

Vincent said nothing.

“Did Thomas Hale know who my real father was?””

Vincent looked down.

“I think he did.””

“Think?””

“My father left me a message before he disappeared.””

Dominic froze.

“What message?””

Vincent opened a locked drawer.

From inside, he removed a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

He placed it on the table.

“I never opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because it wasn’t addressed to me.””

Dominic looked at the envelope.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the name was clear.

*For Dominic.*

His hands tightened.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences.

Dominic,

If you are reading this, then Richard failed to keep the truth buried.

You need to know one thing.

Your blood is not the reason you matter.

But someone will try to convince you it is.

Dominic continued.

The child named Ellie is connected to the same secret.

Protect her.

Because the person hunting her is not trying to destroy a child.

They are trying to erase the last evidence that Richard Vale ever existed.

Dominic stopped.

Vincent stared.

“What does that mean?””

Dominic looked up.

“I don’t know.””

The words felt different now.

Because for the first time, he understood why everyone was afraid.

It wasn’t about money.

It wasn’t about inheritance.

It was about proof.

Proof of something Richard Vale had done.

Something powerful enough to make people kill.

Then Dominic noticed something written at the bottom of the page.

A final line.

One he hadn’t seen before.

Because it was folded under the paper.

*The child you are protecting is not Adrian’s secret.*

Dominic’s heart stopped.

Below it:

*She is yours.*

The next morning, Dominic found Ellie sitting on the floor of the great room.

She was playing with her wooden latch toy.

Click.

Pause.

Click.

The same rhythm she had noticed on his brace.

She looked up.

“Good morning.””

Dominic sat beside her.

“Good morning.””

She studied his face.

“You’re thinking again.””

“Yes.””

“Are you sad?””

He looked at her.

“No.””

She tilted her head.

“You’re not telling the truth.””

Dominic almost smiled.

Almost.

“You’re very sure of yourself.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your eyes do the thing.””

“What thing?””

“They look far away.””

Dominic looked at the little girl.

At Ethan’s daughter.

At the child everyone wanted to hide.

At the person connected to a mystery older than her own life.

“Ellie.””

“Yes?””

“Do you remember your daddy?””

She nodded.

“A little.””

“What do you remember?””

She thought carefully.

“He sang badly.””

Dominic blinked.

“What?””

She giggled.

“He sang when he cooked.””

For the first time in days, Dominic smiled.

“Anything else?””

“He told me stories.””

“What kind?””

She reached for her wooden toy.

“About a castle.””

“A castle?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Ellie looked down.

“He said one day, a man would come and tell me I belonged somewhere.””

Dominic went still.

“What man?””

She shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

“Did he say anything else?””

Ellie looked up.

“Yes.””

“What?””

Her small voice became serious.

“He said the man would be scared.””

Dominic felt a chill.

“Why?””

Ellie looked directly at him.

“Because he would find out he was my daddy.””

The room went silent.

Before Dominic could speak, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman’s voice whispered.

“Dominic.””

He recognized it.

Dr. Bennett.

“Where are you?””

Her breathing was uneven.

“I made a mistake.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“I checked the original DNA records.””

Dominic stood.

“And?””

The doctor’s voice shook.

“Ethan wasn’t Ellie’s father.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She sounded terrified.

“You don’t understand.””

Dominic tightened his grip on the phone.

“Explain.””

The next words changed everything.

“Because the DNA report Adrian showed you was fake.””

Silence.

“What?””

“Dominic…”

Her voice cracked.

“The real test was never between Ethan and Ellie.””

“Then between who?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Between you and Ellie.””

Dominic stopped breathing.

“And the result?””

The line went silent.

Then Dr. Bennett said:

“Dominic…”

A crash sounded in the background.

Someone entered her location.

She whispered one final sentence before the call ended.

“The real father was never missing.””

Dominic stared at the dead phone.

Because he already knew.

He had known before she said it.

The truth he had spent his entire life avoiding.

The truth Adrian feared.

The truth Richard Vale buried.

Ellie Rowan wasn’t connected to the Vale family.

She was connected to him.

May you like

And somewhere in Chicago…

Someone knew.
