Surprise

Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Manor

Dominic Vale had spent twenty years learning one rule.

People always lied when they were afraid.

The problem was figuring out what they were afraid of.

By midnight, the rain had become heavier.

The windows of Vale Manor shook softly under the force of the storm, and the lights reflected across the polished floors like broken pieces of glass.

Clare Rowan sat alone in the small employee dining room.

Ellie was asleep upstairs in the guest suite assigned to temporary staff families.

Normally, Clare would have been grateful for the kindness.

Tonight, she felt trapped.

Because she knew something had changed.

The moment Dominic looked at her after that phone call, she saw it.

Suspicion.

Not anger.

Not accusation.

Something worse.

A question.

The door opened.

Clare stood immediately.

Dominic entered without his cane.

She noticed.

Her eyes widened.

“You’re walking better.””

He looked down.

“The brace was the problem.””

A silence followed.

Then Dominic placed a small folder on the table.

Clare stared at it.

“What is that?””

“Your employment records.””

Her face tightened.

“I don’t understand.””

“I reviewed them.””

“And?””

“And there’s something missing.””

Clare swallowed.

“What?””

“Your history.””

She looked away.

“People don’t always have a perfect record, Mr. Vale.””

“No.””

Dominic pulled out a chair.

“They don’t.””

He sat across from her.

“But yours is unusually empty.””

Clare said nothing.

“You worked in three different households before mine.””

“Yes.””

“All wealthy families.””

“Yes.””

“Then suddenly, every record disappears.””

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

“I needed work.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Clare looked at him.

For a moment, Dominic saw something unexpected.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Mr. Vale, I have done nothing wrong.””

“I didn’t say you did.””

“But you’re looking at me like I’m dangerous.””

Dominic leaned back.

“Someone altered my medical equipment.””

Clare went silent.

“And your daughter found it.””

“Ellie is a child.””

“She’s observant.””

“She’s curious.””

“She noticed something six trained professionals missed.””

Clare looked down.

“I’m happy she helped.””

“But?””

“But I don’t want her involved in this.””

Dominic studied her.

“What does that mean?””

Clare shook her head.

“Nothing.””

“Clare.””

She looked up.

His voice had changed.

Less like an interrogation.

More like a warning.

“Someone inside this house tried to hurt me.””

She remained silent.

“And now someone is telling me you’re connected.””

Her face went pale.

“Who said that?””

Dominic noticed.

Not the fear.

The reaction.

“You didn’t ask what they meant.””

Clare froze.

“You asked who said it.””

The room became quiet.

Dominic stood.

“Tell me why.””

Clare looked toward the door.

Then toward the ceiling.

Toward where her daughter slept.

“I can’t.””

“That usually means you can.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“If I tell you, Ellie becomes a target.””

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“No one touches that child.””

Clare looked at him.

Something about the certainty in his voice made her hesitate.

“Why do you care?””

The question surprised him.

Dominic looked away.

Because he didn’t have an easy answer.

He had spent years protecting businesses.

Assets.

Reputations.

Numbers on spreadsheets.

But a small girl with messy brown hair had looked at his damaged leg and treated him like a person instead of a powerful man.

Finally, he said:

“Because someone should have protected me when I was young.””

Clare said nothing.

For a moment, the billionaire and the housekeeper simply stood there.

Two people carrying things they refused to say.

Then Dominic’s security phone buzzed.

Vincent.

He answered.

“What?””

A pause.

His face changed.

“Where?””

Another pause.

“Do not touch anything.””

He ended the call.

Clare immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

Dominic looked toward the hallway.

“Your room was searched.””

Her blood turned cold.

“My room?””

“And Ellie’s.””

Clare rushed toward the door.

Dominic grabbed her arm.

“Wait.””

She stopped.

“They didn’t steal anything.””

“Then why?””

Dominic’s eyes moved to the folder containing her records.

“Because they weren’t looking for something.””

A chill moved through the room.

“They were looking for someone.””

The next morning, Vincent placed a small envelope on Dominic’s desk.

“No fingerprints.””

Dominic opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Clare.

Not at Vale Manor.

Not recently.

Years earlier.

Standing beside a man Dominic knew very well.

A man who had died in the Lower Wacker Drive crash.

Dominic stared at the picture.

Then turned it over.

There was a handwritten message on the back.

Three words.

May you like

Three words that changed everything.

*She knows why.*
