Chapter 8

The house had always bothered me.
Not because I wanted it.
Not because I was jealous of Vanessa.
But because Marcus purchased it less than a year after our divorce.
A beautiful two-story home.
Five bedrooms.
A swimming pool.
A marble kitchen.
And a grand staircase Vanessa loved photographing for social media.
At the time, Marcus told everyone his business was thriving.
I believed him.
I even congratulated him.
Now Denise was telling me that money connected to our missing savings may have helped finance the purchase.
I stared at the address.
My stomach tightened.
"So the house might have been bought partly with our money?"
Denise nodded carefully.
"Potentially. We need the full transaction history."
I closed my eyes.
I remembered how hard I worked to keep my own home after the divorce.
The double shifts.
The overtime.
The nights I sat at the kitchen table calculating bills.
Meanwhile, Marcus and Vanessa were living in a house that may have been supported by money taken from Malik and me.
I felt anger rise.
But this time, it was different.
It wasn't helpless anger.
It was focused.
I knew what I wanted.
The truth.
The money returned.
And my son's future protected.
Over the following weeks, Denise worked with a forensic accountant.
They reviewed bank statements.
Property records.
Business transfers.
And the documents connected to Bennett Family Holdings.
The findings were disturbing.
Some accounts appeared to contain false information.
Money had moved between businesses without clear explanations.
And several transactions involved signatures Marcus later admitted he had supplied without proper authorization.
The accountant also found payments connected to Vanessa's salon.
I felt exhausted just reading the summaries.
But I kept going.
Every page mattered.
One afternoon, Marcus called.
"Nia, can we meet?"
I hesitated.
"Why?"
"I want to make things right."
I closed my eyes.
"Marcus, you keep saying that."
"I know."
"Then do something."
He took a breath.
"I'm giving Denise access to everything."
I sat straighter.
"Everything?"
"All the accounts. Business records. Property documents."
My heart pounded.
"Why now?"
He was quiet.
Then he whispered, "Because Malik won't answer my calls."
I felt sadness.
Marcus continued.
"I thought if I protected Vanessa, eventually things would settle down."
I shook my head.
"And now?"
"Now I realize I've been destroying the people who loved me."
I didn't answer.
He began crying.
"Nia, I lost your trust. I might lose my marriage. And my son looks at me like I'm a stranger."
I swallowed.
"Marcus, you can't demand that Malik forgive you."
"I know."
"You have to earn back whatever relationship he's willing to give you."
He nodded.
"I understand."
For the first time, I believed he might actually be listening.
The next morning, Denise confirmed that Marcus had begun providing records voluntarily.
It was a significant step.
But it didn't erase what he had done.
Then Vanessa contacted me.
I almost ignored her message.
But she wrote something that made me pause.
"I want to apologize in person. No excuses."
I thought about it for a long time.
Then I agreed to meet in Denise's office.
Not my home.
Not a restaurant.
Somewhere neutral.
Vanessa arrived without Marcus.
She wore a simple navy dress.
Her curls were pulled back.
She looked tired.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she sat across from me.
"Nia."
"Vanessa."
She took a breath.
"I'm sorry."
I watched her.
She continued.
"I was cruel to you at graduation."
I said nothing.
"I knew that seat was yours."
My chest tightened.
"Then why did you take it?"
Her eyes filled.
"Because I wanted everyone to see me as Malik's mother."
I stared at her.
She lowered her head.
"I know how horrible that sounds."
I felt anger rise.
"Vanessa, you cannot become someone's mother by humiliating the woman who raised him."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Malik was there when he was sick. When he was scared. When he needed someone."
My voice trembled.
"I was there."
Vanessa began crying.
"I know."
I leaned forward.
"You could have been another person who loved him."
She looked up.
"But you chose to compete with me."
Her face crumpled.
"I was jealous."
I sat back.
There it was.
The truth.
Not confusion.
Not misunderstanding.
Jealousy.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Marcus talked about you constantly when we first married."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Not romantically. He talked about how strong you were. How you always managed everything."
I stared at her.
"That made you hate me?"
She shook her head.
"I thought I could never measure up."
I felt sadness.
But I didn't allow it to excuse her actions.
"So you tried to make me smaller."
She nodded.
"Yes."
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then I asked the question that mattered.
"Did you open credit accounts using Malik's identity?"
She closed her eyes.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"Did you know he hadn't given permission?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
I felt anger burn through me.
"Then you committed a serious betrayal."
She began crying harder.
"I know."
I looked at Denise.
She remained quiet.
I turned back toward Vanessa.
"What are you going to do about it?"
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I'm cooperating with the investigation."
I nodded.
"And?"
"I'm providing records. I'm working with my attorney on repayment."
I studied her.
"Good."
She looked surprised.
"Good?"
"Yes. Because apologies without action are just words."
She nodded.
Then whispered, "Do you think Malik will ever forgive me?"
I thought about my son.
About his tears.
About his courage.
"I don't know."
Vanessa lowered her head.
"And you shouldn't ask him until he's ready."
She nodded.
We ended the meeting quietly.
I didn't hug her.
I didn't promise forgiveness.
But I left knowing she had finally admitted what she had done.
That mattered.
A few days later, Malik received wonderful news.
His university had completed its review of the disputed financial information.
His scholarship remained intact.
The school accepted the documentation showing that the questionable accounts were under investigation.
I cried when he showed me the email.
"Mom!"
He hugged me.
"I get to go!"
I laughed through tears.
"Of course you do!"
For the first time in months, he looked like the excited eighteen-year-old he deserved to be.
We celebrated with pizza.
And ice cream.
And a ridiculous movie he loved.
For one night, we didn't talk about Marcus.
Or Vanessa.
Or money.
We simply enjoyed being mother and son.
Then the following morning, Denise called.
"Nia, we have a court date."
My stomach tightened.
"For what?"
"The civil case concerning the diverted funds."
I sat down.
She continued.
"The financial review supports a substantial recovery claim."
I felt hope.
"How substantial?"
She gave me the preliminary figure.
It included the missing savings.
The college funds.
And additional losses connected to unauthorized transactions.
More than one hundred fifty thousand dollars.
I closed my eyes.
After years of feeling powerless, I was finally close to getting justice.
But Denise wasn't finished.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"Marcus has offered a settlement."
I sat straighter.
"What kind?"
She paused.
"He wants to transfer his interest in the house to satisfy part of the debt."
I stared at the wall.
The house.
The same house Vanessa had used to display her perfect life.
I took a breath.
"Does Vanessa know?"
Denise hesitated.
"She's been notified through counsel."
I closed my eyes.
"How did she respond?"
Denise's voice became serious.
"She intends to challenge the transfer."
I sighed.
Of course she did.
But this time, I wasn't standing alone.
I had evidence.
Legal representation.
And a son who finally knew the truth.
I looked at Malik's graduation photograph.
Then I answered.
May you like
"Denise, I'm ready to fight for what belongs to us."
And for the first time since Marcus stole my savings, I believed I might actually win.
