Surprise

Chapter 5

My son was eighteen years old.

He had earned honors.

A scholarship.

And the respect of his teachers.

Yet before he had even started college, his name had become attached to debts and accounts he knew nothing about.

I stared at the phone.

Marcus.

Again.

The caller explained that the investment account had been created through a private financial firm.

He couldn't provide every detail without completing identity verification.

But he confirmed that Marcus had been listed as the person who established it.

Denise immediately asked Malik to end the call and contact the institution through its independently verified official number.

We did.

After the proper verification process, we learned enough to understand that the situation was serious.

The account was connected to an entity called Bennett Family Holdings.

Its paperwork included Malik's name.

But the listed assets and liabilities were far more complicated than a normal college investment fund.

I felt sick.

"Why would Marcus create something like this?"

Denise studied the documents.

"Possibly for estate planning. Possibly for business purposes. We need the full records before drawing conclusions."

I nodded.

I appreciated her caution.

I was tired of people telling me what they wanted me to believe.

I wanted facts.

That afternoon, I called Marcus.

He answered immediately.

"Nia."

"We need to talk."

He sounded nervous.

"About what?"

"Bennett Family Holdings."

Silence.

Then he whispered, "How did you find out?"

My heart sank.

"So it exists."

He exhaled.

"Yes."

"Why is Malik's name connected to it?"

"It's complicated."

I closed my eyes.

"Marcus, I have spent six years listening to that word."

He said nothing.

"Complicated doesn't explain stolen savings."

"Nia—"

"It doesn't explain unauthorized credit accounts."

"I know."

"And it certainly doesn't explain why our son's scholarship is now being questioned."

His breathing changed.

"What?"

I told him about the university email.

He cursed under his breath.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

I felt cold.

"What wasn't supposed to happen?"

He hesitated.

Then said, "The account was supposed to protect assets."

"Whose assets?"

Another silence.

"Vanessa's business."

I gripped the phone.

"Marcus."

He began speaking quickly.

"Her company was struggling. There were creditors. I was trying to reorganize things."

"By putting them in Malik's name?"

"No. Not exactly."

"Then explain exactly."

He took a breath.

"Bennett Family Holdings was supposed to hold certain investments for Malik's future."

I looked at Denise.

She listened silently beside me.

Marcus continued.

"But Vanessa's business accounts became involved."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How?"

"I signed guarantees."

"Using Malik's information?"

He hesitated.

"Some documents included his name."

I closed my eyes.

"Did you have his permission?"

"No."

That single word hurt more than the rest.

No.

He knew.

He knew our son had never agreed.

And he had done it anyway.

I took a breath.

"Marcus, we're giving everything to Denise."

He sounded frightened.

"Nia, please."

"No more hiding."

He lowered his voice.

"If this becomes public, Vanessa's business will collapse."

I stared at the wall.

"Marcus, your son is already suffering."

He said nothing.

Then I ended the call.

Denise looked at me.

"You handled that well."

I shook my head.

"I don't feel like I handled anything well."

She leaned forward.

"You're protecting your son."

I looked toward Malik.

He sat beside the window.

His face was pale.

He had heard everything.

I moved toward him.

"Baby."

He looked at me.

"Did Dad really put me into his business?"

I sat beside him.

"It appears he used your name in documents without your permission."

He swallowed.

"Why?"

I didn't know how to answer.

Because I couldn't understand how a father could risk his child's future to protect another adult's financial mistakes.

The next several days were exhausting.

We collected documents.

We filed reports concerning the unauthorized accounts.

Malik disputed the credit entries.

Denise contacted the university with evidence that the reported investment account was under investigation.

I wrote letters.

Made calls.

Organized folders.

And worked my nursing shifts while trying to keep my emotions under control.

At night, I barely slept.

I kept imagining Malik opening a letter that said his scholarship had been canceled.

I kept imagining him blaming himself.

And every time I looked at his graduation photograph, I felt anger rise.

That moment should have belonged to him.

Instead, Marcus and Vanessa had turned it into the beginning of a financial nightmare.

On Thursday evening, Vanessa called me.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

"What do you want?"

Her voice sounded different.

Less confident.

"Nia, can we meet?"

"No."

"Please."

I closed my eyes.

"Vanessa, anything you need to say can go through Denise."

She hesitated.

Then whispered, "Marcus is lying to both of us."

I felt cold.

"What?"

"I found documents."

I stood.

"What documents?"

"Business records."

I looked toward Malik's bedroom.

He was studying.

I lowered my voice.

"Send them to your attorney."

Vanessa began crying.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She took a breath.

"Marcus told me the money came from his divorce settlement."

"I know."

"He told me Malik's accounts were protected."

I gripped the phone.

"Vanessa, you opened credit accounts in Malik's name."

She went silent.

Then whispered, "I did."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, she admitted it directly.

"But Marcus gave me the information."

I felt anger rise.

"That doesn't excuse what you did."

"I know."

She began crying.

"I thought I could repay everything before anyone noticed."

I stared at the wall.

"That's what people keep saying after they take something that isn't theirs."

She said nothing.

Then she whispered, "There's another woman."

I froze.

"What?"

"Marcus has been paying someone for years."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

"I found transfers."

I sat down.

Vanessa continued.

"Monthly payments. Thousands of dollars."

I closed my eyes.

I had no desire to become involved in another one of Marcus's affairs.

But something about her tone frightened me.

"What does this have to do with Malik?"

She swallowed.

"The payments came from the same holding company."

I felt cold.

"How much?"

"Almost ninety thousand dollars over four years."

My mind raced.

Marcus had taken my savings.

He had emptied Malik's college fund.

He had used our son's identity in business documents.

And now there were unexplained payments.

"Vanessa, who received the money?"

She hesitated.

"The account name is hidden behind a company."

"What company?"

"Rosewood Consulting."

I frowned.

The name sounded familiar.

Then I remembered.

During our divorce, Marcus had claimed he needed to make payments to a consulting company connected to a failed real estate investment.

Rosewood.

That was the same name.

My heart pounded.

"Vanessa, send the records to your attorney and tell Denise where they can be obtained."

She hesitated.

Then whispered, "There's something else."

I closed my eyes.

"What now?"

"Marcus told me you agreed to the original investment."

I stared at the phone.

"He said you signed everything."

I felt a chill.

"What documents?"

"The ones transferring your savings."

I sat very still.

Vanessa continued.

"Nia, I saw a copy of your signature."

My hands began trembling.

"Vanessa."

She began crying.

"I think Marcus forged it."

I couldn't speak.

Because if Marcus had forged my signature during our divorce, then the entire financial settlement might have been built on lies.

And the man who had already stolen from our son might have been hiding even more.

I ended the call and immediately contacted Denise.

She listened carefully.

Then asked me to bring every document from my divorce.

I went to the closet.

Behind a stack of blankets was a blue storage box.

Inside were years of legal papers.

I carried it to the table.

My hands shook as I searched.

Then I found the agreement.

The one Marcus claimed I signed.

The one that supposedly authorized the investment.

I stared at the signature.

It looked like mine.

Almost.

But the final letter was wrong.

And beside it was a witness name.

Vanessa Bennett.

I froze.

Because according to the date on the document, Vanessa had witnessed a financial agreement during a time when Marcus was still married to me.

Three months before he admitted he was seeing her.

I sat down slowly.

May you like

And realized my marriage hadn't simply ended because Marcus fell in love with someone else.

It had ended while two people were already making plans with money that belonged to me.
