Surprise

Chapter 5

I stared at Vanessa Mitchell's name until the letters blurred.

Darius had told Marcus he was struggling.

Marcus told me he needed help.

And I'd believed that his brother was simply going through a difficult time.

But now there was another person involved.

A woman receiving business money.

A woman I'd never met.

I opened the transaction records.

Several payments had gone to an account associated with Vanessa.

The descriptions were vague.

Consulting.

Administrative services.

Vendor reimbursement.

I felt sick.

Jasmine sat beside me.

"Who is she?"

"Darius's girlfriend."

She frowned.

"Did you know he had a girlfriend?"

I shook my head.

"He told us he was single."

Jasmine leaned closer.

"Then why was she receiving company money?"

I swallowed.

"That's what I need to find out."

The next morning, Angela contacted Tasha.

With Tasha's permission, they arranged a meeting.

I attended with Jasmine.

Tasha arrived carrying a folder.

She looked nervous.

"I'm sorry about everything," she said.

I nodded.

"Thank you for coming."

She sat across from us.

Then opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails, invoices, and account summaries.

Tasha explained that Vanessa had helped Darius prepare business documents.

Some invoices described services that apparently had never been provided.

Others listed equipment purchases that did not match any actual inventory.

Angela listened carefully.

Then asked, "Do you have firsthand knowledge that these invoices were false?"

Tasha nodded.

"I was responsible for ordering supplies. Several items were never purchased."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Then where did the money go?"

Tasha looked at me.

"Some went to personal accounts."

I swallowed.

"Whose?"

"Darius and Vanessa."

My hands trembled.

I looked at the records.

Luxury purchases.

Travel expenses.

Car payments.

Restaurants.

Expensive clothing.

I thought about the takeout containers covering my coffee table.

Suddenly, they felt like an insult.

I had been working overtime to cover household bills while other people enjoyed money connected to my stolen savings.

Angela took notes.

Then asked another question.

"Was Marcus aware of these transfers?"

Tasha hesitated.

"I saw his name on some approval emails."

My stomach dropped.

"Approval emails?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

I stared at her.

"Can I see them?"

Tasha handed over a printed page.

The sender was Marcus.

The message approved a transfer to Vanessa's account.

I recognized his writing style.

Short sentences.

No unnecessary words.

The email was dated six weeks earlier.

Long after Marcus claimed he had discovered Darius's scheme.

I felt tears rising.

He hadn't simply been tricked.

He had continued participating.

Even after he knew something was wrong.

I looked at Angela.

"What does this mean?"

She spoke carefully.

"It may be important evidence of his involvement. We need to verify the records and establish what he knew."

I nodded.

I wanted answers.

But I also wanted the facts handled properly.

After the meeting, Angela helped prepare additional reports.

The bank continued investigating the unauthorized transfers.

The lender received my written dispute concerning the guarantee.

I also obtained copies of my credit reports.

Several unfamiliar inquiries appeared.

I documented them.

Then I returned to Jasmine's house.

I felt exhausted.

But I was no longer confused.

The pattern was becoming clear.

Darius had created a business structure.

Marcus had provided access to household income and my personal information.

Vanessa had received money.

And I had been left carrying the risk.

That evening, Darius called me.

I nearly ignored it.

Then I answered.

"What?"

His voice sounded irritated.

"Nia, why are you talking to lawyers?"

I stared at the wall.

"Because you and Marcus used my money and my name."

He sighed.

"You're making this bigger than it needs to be."

I laughed bitterly.

"Forty-eight thousand dollars is already big."

He remained silent.

I continued.

"And that doesn't include my savings."

Darius muttered something.

Then said, "Look, Marcus was trying to help me."

I felt anger rising.

"By forging my signature?"

"He thought you'd understand."

I stared at the phone.

"Understand what?"

"Family helping family."

I closed my eyes.

"Family doesn't steal from family."

He scoffed.

"You always thought you were better than us."

I felt cold.

"What?"

He continued.

"Because you're a nurse. Because you've got savings. Because you think you're so responsible."

I stared at the wall.

Then I understood something.

Darius didn't feel ashamed.

He resented me.

My hard work.

My independence.

My ability to save money.

He saw those things as something I owed him.

I took a slow breath.

"Don't contact me again except through my attorney."

He laughed.

"You can't keep Marcus away from his brother."

I shook my head.

"That's Marcus's choice."

Then I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

Jasmine walked into the room.

"What happened?"

I told her.

She sat beside me.

"Nia, you did the right thing."

I nodded.

But my heart still hurt.

I had married into that family believing love would make us stronger.

Now I was learning that some people considered my generosity an invitation to take more.

Two weeks later, the bank informed me that the pending $9,800 transfer had been stopped.

I cried when I heard.

It wasn't everything.

But it was something.

The bank was still reviewing the earlier transactions.

The lender was investigating the disputed guarantee.

And my attorney was preparing to challenge any liability based on the forged signature.

I felt a little hope.

Then another development arrived.

The towing company sent me copies of the vehicle surrender documentation.

Angela examined them.

She called me immediately.

"Nia, I need you to come in."

My heart tightened.

"Why?"

"There's something unusual about the paperwork."

I drove to her office in Jasmine's car.

Angela placed the documents in front of me.

"Look at this date."

I leaned forward.

The surrender authorization had been signed ten days before the repossession.

I frowned.

"Okay."

Angela pointed toward another document.

A private agreement between Marcus and Darius.

The agreement stated that the vehicle would be surrendered to satisfy part of a debt owed by Marcus to Darius.

I stared at her.

"What?"

She nodded.

"That's how the document reads."

My stomach tightened.

"Marcus owed Darius?"

"According to this paperwork."

I shook my head.

"That makes no sense."

Angela looked at me.

"Do you know whether Marcus borrowed money from his brother?"

"No."

I stared at the agreement.

Then I noticed the amount.

Twenty thousand dollars.

My heart stopped.

Marcus hadn't simply given Darius money.

He had also apparently borrowed from him.

I felt sick.

"Where did twenty thousand dollars come from?"

Angela looked serious.

"That's what we need to determine."

That evening, Marcus sent me a message.

"Nia, please don't believe everything Darius says. There's something I haven't told you."

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

"I borrowed money from him before we got married."

My heart began pounding.

I read the next sentence.

"And if you find out why, you'll never forgive me."

I sat completely still.

For four years, I'd believed I knew my husband.

Now I realized I might never have known him at all.
