Surprise

Chapter 1

The sound of my mother's hand slamming a graduation program into Marcus's lap was louder than the applause coming from the stage.

"Stop pretending you're her father. You never will be!"

I was standing near the edge of the graduation stage when I heard her.

For a second, I thought I had misunderstood.

Then I saw Marcus.

He was sitting in the third row, wearing the navy suit I had helped him choose three days earlier. His silver beard was freshly trimmed. His hands rested quietly on his knees.

And his eyes were filling with tears.

My mother, Vanessa, stood over him in her burgundy dress, looking as though she had just won an argument.

"Her real father should be celebrating today, not you."

Several parents turned around.

Someone whispered.

Marcus lowered his head.

And something inside me finally broke.

I had spent eighteen years watching that man sacrifice everything for me.

He was the one who stayed awake when I had pneumonia.

The one who learned how to braid my hair after watching tutorials because Mom refused to get out of bed.

The one who worked double shifts to pay for my school trips.

The one who cried harder than I did when I received my college acceptance letter.

And now, on the most important day of my life, my mother was humiliating him in front of hundreds of strangers.

I stepped off the stage.

"Maya?" my guidance counselor whispered.

I didn't answer.

My graduation gown brushed against the grass as I walked between rows of folding chairs.

People moved aside.

I could hear my mother talking, but I no longer cared what she was saying.

Then she saw me.

Her expression changed instantly.

"Oh, sweetheart!" she called, smiling. "Come here! I was just telling Marcus—"

I walked straight past her.

Her smile vanished.

"Marcus."

He looked up.

"Maya? Honey, you should be onstage."

I knelt in front of him.

For the first time that morning, he couldn't hide his tears.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I didn't mean to ruin your graduation."

Those words hurt more than anything my mother had said.

He thought he was the problem.

Even after everything he had done, he still believed he was the one who didn't belong.

I reached into my graduation gown and pulled out a sealed white envelope.

His hands trembled when I placed it in his lap.

"What's this, baby?"

"Something I should have done a long time ago."

I wrapped my arms around him.

"You're the only dad who ever showed up for me."

His body shook.

For a moment, he didn't hug me back.

Then his arms closed around my shoulders, and he began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not the way he usually did when he thought nobody was watching.

He cried like a man who had been carrying eighteen years of love and pain without ever expecting anyone to recognize it.

Behind us, someone started clapping.

Then another person.

Soon, the applause spread across the entire section.

My mother stood motionless.

"What is going on?" she demanded.

Marcus pulled back just enough to look at me.

"Maya, what's in the envelope?"

"Open it."

He carefully tore the seal.

Inside was a copy of the legal petition I had filed that morning.

At the top were the words:

PETITION FOR CHANGE OF NAME.

Below them was my current legal name.

Maya Vanessa Carter.

And beneath that was the name I wanted.

Maya Elise Bennett.

Marcus's last name.

His mouth opened, but no words came out.

"I want your last name, Dad."

He stared at the document.

Then he looked at me.

"Baby, you don't have to do this."

"I know."

"Your mother—"

"This has nothing to do with what she wants."

My mother pushed through the aisle.

"Maya, what did you do?"

Her voice was sharp enough to silence the people around us.

I stood.

She snatched at the envelope, but Marcus instinctively moved it away.

"You're changing your name?" she demanded. "Without asking me?"

"I'm eighteen."

"That doesn't mean you get to disrespect your family!"

I looked at Marcus.

Then back at her.

"Funny. You were just explaining that he isn't my family."

Her face flushed.

"Don't twist my words."

"I heard every word."

She glanced around at the watching parents.

"Lower your voice."

"You didn't lower yours when you were humiliating him."

For a moment, she looked genuinely startled.

My mother had spent years controlling every conversation in our house.

She wasn't accustomed to someone refusing to be quiet.

Then she noticed the other document beneath the name-change petition.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What else is in that envelope?"

I felt Marcus's hand settle gently against my shoulder.

"It's all right, Maya," he whispered. "You don't have to fight for me."

I turned toward him.

"I'm not fighting because you asked me to."

I faced my mother again.

"I'm fighting because you taught me what happens when nobody does."

She reached for the envelope.

I stopped her.

"There's one more page you haven't seen."

For the first time in my life, I saw real fear cross Vanessa Carter's face.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Because she recognized the heading visible beneath Marcus's thumb.

PETITION FOR ADULT ADOPTION.

And underneath it, written in my own handwriting, were six words that would change our lives forever.

I CHOOSE MARCUS BENNETT AS MY FATHER.

My mother stared at those words.

Then she whispered something that made my blood turn cold.

"If he adopts you, they'll find out."

Marcus slowly lifted his head.

"Find out what, Vanessa?"

She didn't answer.

But I already knew this was no longer just about a last name.

Something had been hidden from me.

And my mother was terrified that I was finally getting close to the truth.
