Surprise

Chapter 2

I knelt beside Malik.

Cars rolled through the terminal drop-off area.

Porters pushed luggage carts.

Families hurried toward the entrance.

Everyone around us seemed excited.

Everyone except my son.

He stood beside his abandoned duffel bag, staring at me with tears in his eyes.

“Daddy?”

His voice was barely audible.

“Am I not part of the family?”

My chest tightened so painfully that I could barely breathe.

I took his face gently between my hands.

“Malik, listen carefully.”

He looked down.

“Buddy, look at me.”

His eyes finally met mine.

“You are my son.”

His lips trembled.

“You are my family.”

A tear slipped down his cheek.

“And nobody gets to decide that you don't belong.”

He threw his arms around my neck.

I held him tightly.

For a moment, I forgot about Denise.

The cruise.

The money.

Everything.

All I cared about was the child trembling against my chest.

Then I heard Denise sigh.

“Oh, Marcus. You're making this so dramatic.”

I slowly stood.

Maya's face changed.

“Mom, stop.”

Denise turned sharply.

“Excuse me?”

Maya stepped closer to Malik.

“You hurt him.”

Denise laughed.

“Don't be ridiculous.”

Maya's eyes filled.

“He was excited about this trip.”

“So were you!”

“And I wanted him to come!”

Denise went silent.

For the first time, I noticed something important.

Maya hadn't been celebrating the upgrade.

She looked ashamed.

Frightened, even.

I turned toward her.

“Maya, how did you find out?”

She swallowed.

“I saw Mom's email yesterday.”

Denise snapped, “That was private!”

Maya flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Don't yell at her.”

Denise threw up her hands.

“I'm surrounded by ungrateful people!”

I took a breath.

“Denise, I want one straight answer.”

She folded her arms.

“Fine.”

“Did you deliberately cancel Malik's reservation?”

She hesitated.

Then lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

The word landed like a punch.

I stared at her.

“Without telling me?”

“Yes.”

“Without asking Malik?”

“He's twelve, Marcus. He doesn't make travel decisions.”

I felt anger rise.

“Neither do you make decisions about abandoning my child at a cruise terminal without discussing them with me.”

Denise looked around.

People were beginning to notice.

She lowered her voice.

“Can we stop embarrassing ourselves?”

I shook my head.

“You created this situation.”

She pointed toward the ship.

“Boarding closes this afternoon. We need to go.”

I stared at her.

“We?”

She blinked.

“Yes, Marcus.”

I looked down at Malik.

He was wiping his eyes with his sleeve.

Then I turned back toward Denise.

“I'm not boarding that ship without my son.”

Her expression hardened.

“Then you'll ruin everyone's vacation.”

I took a slow breath.

“No.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“Canceling Malik's ticket ruined the vacation.”

Maya stepped forward.

“Dad, I'll stay with Malik.”

I turned.

She looked terrified.

But determined.

“I don't want to go if he can't.”

My chest softened.

“Maya, you don't have to fix this.”

She shook her head.

“I know.”

Then she glanced at her mother.

“But it isn't right.”

Denise grabbed her arm.

“You're coming with me.”

Maya pulled away.

“Mom, please.”

I moved closer.

“Denise, let her go.”

She released Maya immediately.

But her face was furious.

I could see that this confrontation was getting worse.

And I wasn't willing to make either child stand in the middle of it.

I picked up Malik's duffel bag.

Then looked at both teenagers.

“We're moving away from the drop-off lane.”

Malik nodded.

Maya followed.

I guided them toward a nearby seating area outside the terminal.

Denise trailed behind us, muttering angrily.

Once the children were seated, I called the cruise company's customer-service number.

I explained that a minor passenger's reservation had been canceled without my authorization.

The representative asked for the booking reference.

I provided it.

After verifying my identity, she reviewed the account.

Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.

“Mr. Bennett, the canceled reservation was removed yesterday.”

“I understand.”

“The credit was applied to another passenger's accommodation upgrade.”

I closed my eyes.

“Can the ticket be restored?”

She paused.

“I'll need to check current availability.”

I waited.

Malik sat beside me.

His small hands were folded tightly.

Maya watched my face.

Denise stood several feet away, scrolling through her phone.

Finally, the representative returned.

“Mr. Bennett, the original cabin assignment is no longer available.”

My heart dropped.

“Is there another option?”

“We can review alternative accommodations, but I can't guarantee an immediate restoration.”

I took a breath.

“Please check.”

She placed me on hold.

I looked at Malik.

He was staring at his shoes.

“Buddy?”

He raised his eyes.

“Yeah?”

“I need you to know something.”

He nodded.

“This isn't your fault.”

His lips trembled.

“Okay.”

I squeezed his shoulder.

“And whatever happens with the ship, we're staying together.”

He leaned against me.

Then whispered, “I don't even care about the ship anymore.”

My heart broke.

I knew what he meant.

The vacation had stopped feeling exciting.

Now it reminded him of being rejected.

The representative returned.

She explained that an alternate booking might be possible but would require further arrangements and additional costs.

I thanked her.

Then ended the call.

Denise immediately approached.

“Well?”

I looked at her.

“We're not boarding today.”

Her mouth fell open.

“What?”

“I need to make sure the kids are okay.”

She stared at me.

“You're throwing away thousands of dollars!”

I felt something inside me go still.

For a moment, I simply looked at her.

Then I said quietly, “You seem more upset about the money than about what you did to Malik.”

Denise laughed bitterly.

“Because he's fine!”

I turned toward my son.

His eyes were red.

His shoulders were slumped.

He looked as though he wanted to disappear.

I faced Denise again.

“No.”

My voice broke.

“He isn't.”

Maya suddenly stood.

“Mom, tell him the rest.”

Denise froze.

“What?”

Maya's hands were shaking.

“Tell Dad what you said when you canceled Malik.”

My stomach tightened.

I turned toward her.

“What did she say?”

Maya began crying.

Denise snapped, “Maya, don't you dare.”

But Maya looked directly at me.

Then whispered, “Mom said this was the perfect chance to make Malik understand where he stands.”

I stopped breathing.

“Where he stands?”

Maya nodded.

“She said he needed to learn that not everything in this family belongs to him.”

I stared at Denise.

Then Maya continued.

“And she said once we got home, things were going to change.”

My heart began pounding.

“What things?”

Maya looked down.

May you like

Then whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom said she was tired of pretending Malik was her family.”
