Surprise

Chapter 7

I asked Celeste to start from the beginning.

She sat across from me in the manager's office, twisting a tissue between her fingers.

Vanessa waited outside with Naomi.

Marcus stood near the entrance.

I wanted Celeste to feel safe.

For seven years, she had cleaned our floors, polished our mirrors, and kept our fitting rooms spotless.

I had never met her.

That realization hurt.

“Tell me what you saw,” I said.

Celeste took a trembling breath.

“It was almost two months ago.”

She explained that she'd been working late when she noticed Adrian near the stockroom.

He was speaking with Vanessa beside several sealed shipping containers.

One box had been opened.

Inside were expensive handbags, jewelry, and designer accessories.

None of the items appeared on the routine transfer schedule.

“I heard him tell her the shipment had to leave before the inventory team arrived.”

“Did he say where it was going?”

“Overseas.”

I leaned forward.

“Did you see any documents?”

She nodded.

“There was a shipping label.”

“Do you remember the destination?”

“London.”

My mind raced.

Carter Luxury Group occasionally transferred merchandise between international partners, but every shipment required detailed documentation.

Celeste continued.

“I asked Ms. Brooks whether she needed help.”

“What happened?”

“She told me to mind my business.”

A tear slid down her cheek.

“Three days later, security called me into the office. They said an expensive necklace was missing.”

I felt sick.

“They accused you?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone show you evidence?”

“No.”

“They said there was a witness.”

“Who?”

She looked down.

“Ms. Brooks.”

I closed my eyes.

I already knew Vanessa had signed false reports.

But hearing the consequences directly from Celeste made it impossible to see those forms as mere paperwork.

“They told me I could leave quietly or be arrested.”

“What did you choose?”

“I left.”

Her voice cracked.

“I had worked there seven years. I didn't even get to say goodbye to my friends.”

I reached across the desk.

“You deserved better.”

She began crying.

After a moment, she wiped her face.

“There's one more thing.”

I waited.

“The night they fired me, I went back for my coat. I heard Mr. Price on the phone.”

“What was he saying?”

“He said the next shipment would be the last before the ownership transfer.”

My stomach tightened.

“Ownership transfer?”

Celeste nodded.

“He said once the old woman was out, nobody would question anything.”

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The old woman.

Me.

Adrian hadn't been planning a simple financial fraud.

He had been preparing to push me out of my own company.

I thanked Celeste and asked Naomi to bring her into the formal witness process.

Then I called our outside forensic accountants.

By midday, they had identified a pattern of unusual inventory adjustments.

High-value merchandise had been marked as damaged, returned, or transferred.

But shipping records told a different story.

The goods had traveled through intermediary companies connected to Sterling Advisory Partners.

Adrian's sister appeared in several corporate filings.

And Vanessa had approved multiple release forms.

I sat with Naomi and examined the evidence.

“How much is missing?” I asked.

She hesitated.

“Potentially more than eight million dollars in goods.”

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

Eight million.

And that figure didn't include the suspicious bank transfers.

Julian entered carrying coffee.

He looked pale.

“Mom, there's something else.”

I glanced up.

“What?”

“The board called an emergency meeting.”

Naomi frowned.

“Who requested it?”

“Adrian.”

I stared at my son.

“He's on leave.”

“I know.”

Julian placed a document on the desk.

The meeting notice proposed a vote to suspend my executive authority.

It cited concerns about financial oversight and erratic management decisions.

Naomi's expression turned cold.

“He's still using that fabricated assessment.”

I read the notice.

The meeting was scheduled for Friday.

Two days away.

“Can we stop it?” Julian asked.

“Not without examining the notice, our bylaws, and the board's authority,” Naomi replied.

I leaned back.

Adrian had been preparing this for months.

He knew our governance structure.

He knew which executives could be pressured.

He knew my family.

What he hadn't expected was a cleaning uniform and a yellow bucket.

I looked at my children.

“We're going to that meeting.”

Julian frowned.

“Mom, they'll try to humiliate you.”

I almost smiled.

“I survived Vanessa in the showroom.”

“This is different.”

“Yes,” I said. “It is.”

I looked at the financial reports spread across my desk.

“These people have hidden behind expensive suits and impressive titles for too long.”

Naomi nodded.

“We'll be prepared.”

That afternoon, investigators confirmed that they had located Leonard.

He had gone to stay with a relative in North Carolina.

After speaking with counsel, he had agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

His testimony could help establish how the transactions were approved.

But I knew cooperation wouldn't erase his responsibility.

I told Naomi the same thing.

“We pursue the truth. We don't promise anyone immunity.”

She nodded.

“Agreed.”

As evening approached, I walked through the boutique one last time.

Tanya was helping an elderly customer choose a scarf.

Marcus stood by the entrance.

Celeste was speaking quietly with another employee.

For the first time, the atmosphere felt different.

Not completely safe yet.

But hopeful.

Then Vanessa approached.

“Mrs. Carter?”

I turned.

She held a folded piece of paper.

“I wrote down everything I remember.”

I accepted it.

At the bottom was a phone number.

“What's this?”

“Adrian's private number. The one he used for instructions he didn't want recorded through the company.”

I looked up.

Vanessa swallowed.

“He called me this afternoon.”

“What did he want?”

“He offered me money to disappear before Friday.”

My heart pounded.

“Did you accept?”

“No.”

I watched tears fill her eyes.

“He told me that if I testified, he would destroy my life.”

I placed the paper inside my folder.

“Then we're going to make sure you can give your statement safely.”

Vanessa nodded.

May you like

But before she walked away, she whispered something that stayed with me all night.

“Mrs. Carter, he said your family won't survive what happens at that meeting.”
