Surprise

Chapter 7

I arrived at the courthouse the next morning with Rachel and Monica.

My hands were shaking, but I kept my face calm.

Maya was safe at Grandma's house.

That was all that mattered.

Vanessa stood near the entrance in a cream-colored suit.

Her attorney stood beside her.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"Marcus."

I didn't answer.

"You look tired."

I kept walking.

She stepped into my path.

"I never wanted things to get this ugly."

I stopped.

"Then you shouldn't have hurt my daughter."

Her smile faded.

"Your daughter is the reason we're here."

I stared at her.

"No. Your choices are the reason we're here."

Rachel gently touched my arm.

"Let's go."

Inside the courtroom, Vanessa's attorney argued that there were concerns about Maya's emotional stability and the atmosphere in our home.

He presented selected statements from school records.

Then he introduced an audio recording.

I heard my own voice.

"If things continue like this, maybe she needs to stay somewhere else for a while."

My stomach dropped.

Those were my words.

But the meaning was completely different.

I remembered the conversation.

Three months earlier, Vanessa had told me Maya was overwhelmed by school and needed a change of environment.

I'd suggested that Maya might enjoy staying with Grandma for a weekend.

The recording omitted everything else.

Vanessa's attorney played another piece.

"I can't keep doing this forever."

Again, my voice.

I remembered that conversation too.

I had been discussing my exhausting travel schedule.

Not Maya.

The edited clips made me sound cold.

Absent.

Unwilling to care for my daughter.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me with quiet satisfaction.

Then Rachel stood.

"Your Honor, we dispute the accuracy and context of these recordings."

She explained that the clips were incomplete and that the original files had been requested.

Monica submitted evidence of the disputed financial documents and Maya's recorded experiences.

The judge listened carefully.

I held my breath.

After reviewing the immediate concerns, the court declined to make the sweeping findings Vanessa had requested on the incomplete evidence.

Further review would be necessary.

Protective arrangements would remain in place through appropriate legal channels while the allegations were investigated.

I hadn't won everything.

But Vanessa hadn't succeeded in taking control of the story.

Outside the courtroom, she walked toward me.

"You're celebrating too early."

I looked at her.

"I'm not celebrating."

She tilted her head.

"You think a few recordings will save you?"

I stared at the woman I once believed would help me raise my daughter.

"No."

"Then what will?"

"The truth."

She laughed.

"Truth depends on who people believe."

I took a step back.

"Then let the evidence speak."

That afternoon, Rachel received a breakthrough.

A technician had recovered records showing that several audio clips had been altered.

The timestamps didn't match the conversations Vanessa claimed they represented.

More importantly, the original phone backup contained the complete calls.

I listened to one with Rachel.

My voice sounded exhausted.

"Maybe Maya should stay with Mom for the weekend if she's stressed. She loves being there."

Then Vanessa's voice.

"You think she should leave the house?"

"No. I think a weekend with Grandma might help her relax. This is her home."

The final sentence had been removed from Vanessa's version.

I felt tears sting my eyes.

Rachel looked at me.

"This is important."

I nodded.

"Will it be enough?"

"It's strong evidence. But we need to keep building the case."

That evening, I returned to my mother's house.

Maya was sitting at the dining table doing homework.

When she saw me, she smiled.

Not a frightened smile.

A real one.

For a moment, I felt something I hadn't felt in days.

Hope.

"How was school?" I asked.

"Okay."

"Just okay?"

She grinned slightly.

"I got a ninety-six on my chemistry test."

I smiled.

"That's my girl."

My mother brought out a homemade cake.

"What are we celebrating?" I asked.

"Maya's test."

I laughed.

"Mom, you made a whole cake?"

She shrugged.

"Good news deserves frosting."

Maya laughed.

The sound filled the kitchen.

I realized how long it had been since I'd heard her laugh like that.

Then my phone rang.

Darius.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

"Marcus, I need to talk to you."

"What now?"

"I found the account records."

I stood.

"What records?"

"The ones Adrian told Vanessa to destroy."

My pulse quickened.

"Where are they?"

Darius hesitated.

"I kept copies."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Even in betrayal, my brother had planned for betrayal.

"Bring them to Rachel's office."

"There's something you need to know first."

I gripped the phone.

"What?"

He took a breath.

"Vanessa didn't start planning this four years ago."

I froze.

"Explain."

"She knew about Danielle's trust before she met you."

My stomach turned.

Darius continued.

"Adrian found the property records years ago. Vanessa approached you because she knew who you were."

I sank into a chair.

My marriage.

The dinners.

The affectionate messages.

The way she'd comforted me when I talked about Danielle.

May you like

Had any of it been real?

Darius whispered, "Marcus, I think your entire marriage started with a lie."
