Chapter 1

The sound of scissors tearing through silk was something I would never forget.
I stopped in the doorway of my sewing room, holding a box of sparkling beads against my chest. For one terrible second, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
My younger sister, Vanessa, stood beside my sewing table, cutting through the champagne-colored gown I had spent three months creating.
She wasn't cutting carelessly.
She was destroying it deliberately.
Every time the scissors closed, another piece of my dream fell to the floor.
"Vanessa, STOP!"
She turned toward me with a smile that made my stomach twist.
"Oh, look. The designer finally arrived."
I dropped the box. Beads scattered across the wooden floor as I rushed toward her.
"What are you doing? That dress is for tonight!"
Vanessa made one final cut through the skirt before tossing the scissors onto my table.
"Not anymore."
I grabbed the ruined fabric. The delicate embroidery I had stitched by hand was torn apart. The carefully fitted bodice was damaged beyond repair.
My hands began to shake.
I had designed that gown for the biggest fashion showcase of my career. A famous boutique owner had agreed to attend the family celebration that evening, and I planned to present my work to her privately.
One opportunity could change everything.
Vanessa knew that.
She knew exactly what she was destroying.
"You've always wanted everything to be about you," she said. "Maybe now you'll understand what it feels like to be ordinary."
My mother, Claire, appeared behind her.
She wore an elegant cream outfit, her face pale with shock.
"Vanessa! How could you do this?"
Vanessa shrugged.
"Don't look at me like that. Nia can make another dress."
I stared at her.
"By tonight?"
She leaned closer.
"Maybe you should have thought about that before trying to steal my spotlight."
I had spent years designing beautiful clothes for other people while Vanessa received praise simply for walking into a room.
Whenever I succeeded, she found a way to diminish it.
When my first design won a local competition, she told everyone the judges had felt sorry for me.
When I opened my tiny studio, she laughed at its size.
And when a respected fashion consultant requested my portfolio, Vanessa suddenly announced that she was planning to become an influencer.
My achievements always became competitions I never agreed to enter.
Still, I had never imagined she would destroy something I had created with my own hands.
I sank to my knees and gathered the torn fabric.
Tears blurred my vision.
"Why do you hate me so much?"
For a moment, Vanessa's smile faltered.
Then she lifted her chin.
"Because you act like you're better than everyone else."
"I have never said that."
"You don't have to. Your little designs say it for you."
She turned toward the door.
"Enjoy fixing that mess."
My mother stepped into her path.
"You're not going anywhere until you apologize."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Of course. Protect Nia. You always do."
She pushed past our mother and left.
The sound of her heels faded down the hallway.
I remained on the floor, clutching what remained of my gown.
My mother knelt beside me.
"We'll find something else for tonight."
I shook my head.
"You don't understand. This wasn't just a dress."
"I know, sweetheart."
"No, Mom. You don't."
My voice cracked.
"This was my chance."
She pulled me into her arms, and for several minutes, I let myself cry.
Then I noticed something beneath the sewing table.
A roll of black silk.
Beside it sat a bundle of gold fabric I had purchased months earlier for a collection I never completed.
I slowly lifted my head.
My sewing machine stood untouched.
The scissors lay beside the ruined gown.
Vanessa had destroyed my finished design.
She hadn't destroyed my hands.
I wiped my face.
"Mom, what time does the celebration start?"
"Seven."
I checked the clock.
It was barely nine in the morning.
My mother stared at me.
"Nia, don't even think about it. You need rest."
I stood and carried the black silk to my cutting table.
"Then I guess I'll rest tomorrow."
For the first time that morning, I smiled.
Vanessa believed she had taken away my future.
May you like
She had no idea what I could create when I had nothing left to lose.
And she had absolutely no idea what was hidden inside the sealed folder beneath my sketches.
