Chapter 6 - The Woman Behind the Perfect Smile

Three days after the gala, my father's marriage began collapsing in public.

Someone had uploaded a video of Vanessa pushing me outside the hotel.

It spread quickly.

The clip showed my fall, her shouting, and the moment Dad struck her.

Thousands of strangers began arguing about what they had seen.

Some defended my father.

Others condemned his violence.

Many asked why nobody had intervened sooner.

I couldn't bear watching it.

Every replay reminded me of the pavement against my knees.

The humiliation.

The laughter.

And the terrible moment when I realized Vanessa truly believed I didn't deserve a place in the family.

Dad released a short statement through his attorney.

He acknowledged that hitting Vanessa had been wrong and that he would cooperate with any legal review of the incident.

He also said he was seeking a divorce and would no longer discuss private family matters publicly.

I was relieved.

I didn't want revenge carried out in front of millions of strangers.

I wanted the truth.

And I wanted my life back.

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

On Thursday morning, Olivia called me.

"Emma, have you seen the interview?"

"What interview?"

"Vanessa went on a local morning show."

My stomach dropped.

Olivia sent me a link.

I opened it reluctantly.

Vanessa sat on a white couch wearing a cream blouse, her eyes shining with carefully measured tears.

The interviewer asked about the gala.

Vanessa pressed a tissue against her cheek.

"I've tried for years to love Emma like my own daughter."

I stared at the screen.

"But she resented me from the beginning," Vanessa continued.

"She's been determined to destroy my marriage."

I felt sick.

The interviewer mentioned the video.

Vanessa looked down.

"People don't understand what happened before that moment."

Then she claimed I had pushed Brianna, insulted her, and threatened to ruin the evening.

None of it was true.

She even said I had been receiving generous financial support and was angry because my father had refused to give me more money.

I closed the video.

My hands shook.

Olivia spoke softly through the phone.

"Emma, nobody who knows you will believe that."

I sat on the bed.

"But people who don't know me might."

That was what terrified me.

Vanessa had spent years rewriting events inside our home.

Now she was doing it for an audience.

Dad found me crying.

When I explained, his expression hardened.

"I'll ask Daniel about an appropriate response."

I wiped my face.

"I don't want another public fight."

"Neither do I."

He sat beside me.

"But I won't allow false allegations to go unchallenged when they harm you."

Daniel advised us to preserve the complete video, identify witnesses, and document Vanessa's financial claims.

The hotel agreed to retain security footage.

Our driver provided a written statement.

Several staff members confirmed what they had witnessed.

For the first time, Vanessa couldn't control the entire story.

But while that problem unfolded, Daniel discovered something more serious.

He called us to his office that evening.

"Gregory's attempted financing scheme involved fabricated supporting records," he explained.

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Can we prove it?"

"An independent forensic accountant has identified several inconsistencies."

Daniel laid out a timeline.

Over the previous eighteen months, money had moved through consulting agreements, property management invoices, and shell companies.

Some payments had legitimate explanations.

Others didn't.

The suspicious transactions all seemed to lead toward Gregory's network.

Vanessa had signed authorizations for several payments.

But one document frightened me more than the others.

It was a proposed agreement listing my trust as a potential guarantee for a private loan.

I stared at it.

"How could she use my inheritance as collateral?"

Daniel shook his head.

"She couldn't lawfully do so without the necessary authority. That's why someone appears to have attempted to manufacture that authority."

I felt furious.

For years, Vanessa had called me greedy whenever I asked for basic necessities.

Meanwhile, she was trying to gain control of millions my mother had carefully protected.

Dad looked at the agreement.

"Was Brianna involved?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Her signature appears on some supporting documents. Investigators will have to determine whether she understood them."

I thought about Brianna crying in the office.

I wanted her to be held accountable.

But I also wanted the facts to matter.

I didn't want to become someone who punished people without listening.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I kept thinking about Mom.

She had built a foundation to help vulnerable children.

And years later, people were apparently trying to misuse the money meant for those children.

I opened her letter again.

"Protect that purpose."

Something inside me shifted.

I couldn't spend the rest of my life hiding from Vanessa.

I needed to understand the foundation.

The next morning, I asked Daniel if I could review its programs.

He smiled for the first time in days.

"Your mother would have loved that."

I started with scholarship files.

The foundation supported students who had lost parents, experienced homelessness, or faced serious financial hardship.

Some applications included handwritten letters.

One came from a seventeen-year-old named Lily Martinez.

Her mother had died the previous year.

Her father worked nights at a warehouse.

Lily wanted to study nursing.

She wrote that she was afraid college would be impossible.

I stared at her words.

They reminded me of myself.

Not because our circumstances were identical.

But because we both knew what it felt like to believe our future depended on someone else's willingness to help.

I asked the foundation director about Lily.

"Her application was recommended," he said.

"But the scholarship committee delayed several awards because of funding uncertainty."

My heart tightened.

"How many?"

"Twenty-three students."

I looked at him.

"Can we still help them?"

He hesitated.

"If the restricted scholarship funds are confirmed intact, yes."

I turned to Daniel.

"Then that's our priority."

He nodded.

"We'll make sure the scholarship accounts are protected while the audit continues."

For the first time since the gala, I felt something stronger than anger.

Purpose.

That evening, I told Dad about Lily.

He listened carefully.

Then he said, "I want to help too."

I looked at him.

"You already have the foundation."

He shook his head.

"I've treated it like another business obligation. Your mother never did."

I smiled faintly.

"She would probably make you volunteer."

He laughed through tears.

"She absolutely would."

For a moment, we felt like a family again.

Then his phone rang.

Daniel.

Dad listened quietly.

His smile disappeared.

"What happened?"

A long pause.

"Is anyone hurt?"

My chest tightened.

Dad turned toward me.

"Someone broke into the foundation's records office."

I stood.

"What?"

"Several computers were damaged."

"Did they steal anything?"

Dad swallowed.

"Some physical files are missing."

I immediately thought about Gregory.

Then Daniel said something through the phone that made Dad go completely still.

"Richard, there's surveillance footage."

Dad frowned.

"Of the intruder?"

He listened.

Then looked at me.

His face was pale.

"Emma," he whispered, "Brianna was there."

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

My stepsister had come to Daniel's office crying and begging for protection.

Now she appeared to be connected to another attempt to destroy evidence.

And I no longer knew whether her fear had been real.
