Chapter 5 - The Signature They Couldn't Steal

I had spent years being told I didn't belong at the family table.
Now I was sitting in a law office while two powerful men explained that my signature could stop a four-million-dollar transfer.
It didn't feel real.
Daniel placed the foundation charter in front of me.
"Your mother created a safeguard," he explained.
"Any extraordinary withdrawal above a certain threshold requires approval from the founder's designated family representative."
I stared at the document.
"That's me?"
"Yes."
Dad sat beside me, looking stunned.
"Margaret planned this carefully."
Daniel nodded.
"She knew the foundation could become vulnerable if people forgot why it existed."
I thought about Mom's letter.
Protect that purpose.
For the first time, I understood what she meant.
"What happens if I refuse the transfer?"
Daniel looked relieved.
"We can notify the bank that the authorization is invalid. We should also request an immediate freeze while the transaction is investigated."
"Then let's do it."
He handed me the necessary documents.
My hand trembled as I signed.
For years, Vanessa had told me I was useless.
That I brought nothing to the family.
That I should be grateful for whatever she allowed me to have.
Now, with one signature, I was protecting something my mother had built.
Daniel contacted the bank.
After several tense conversations, the transfer was suspended pending investigation.
Dad released a breath.
But the relief lasted only minutes.
His phone began ringing.
Vanessa.
He stared at the screen.
Then he answered on speaker.
"What do you want?"
Her voice was furious.
"You've frozen my accounts!"
Dad's expression hardened.
"I've restricted access to marital and business funds until our attorneys review everything."
"You have no right!"
"I have every right to protect company assets and investigate suspicious transactions."
She laughed bitterly.
"This is all because of Emma."
I flinched.
Dad noticed.
"No, Vanessa. This is because of your actions."
"That girl has turned you against me."
"She didn't make you push her onto the ground."
"Stop pretending she's innocent!"
Dad closed his eyes.
"We'll communicate through attorneys."
He ended the call.
My heart was pounding.
"She sounds scared."
Daniel nodded.
"She should be concerned."
Dad looked at him.
"What about Gregory?"
"We're tracing the destination of the attempted transfer."
A knock came at the office door.
Daniel's assistant entered with a serious expression.
"There's someone downstairs asking for Miss Bennett."
I froze.
"Who?"
"A young woman. She says she's Brianna."
Dad stood immediately.
"Tell her to leave."
But I surprised both men.
"I want to hear what she has to say."
Dad turned.
"Emma, you don't owe her anything."
"I know."
I took a breath.
"But for once, I want to decide for myself."
Brianna entered ten minutes later.
She looked nothing like the woman who had laughed at me outside the hotel.
Her hair was tied back.
She wore jeans and a wrinkled sweatshirt.
Her eyes were swollen.
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
She looked around the office.
"Mom said you were here."
Dad folded his arms.
"What do you want, Brianna?"
She looked at me.
"I need to talk to Emma."
"I'm listening," I said.
She swallowed.
"Mom's losing it."
I remained silent.
"She's screaming at people. Gregory keeps calling. They think someone stole important papers."
Daniel's gaze sharpened.
"What papers?"
Brianna shook her head.
"I don't know."
I studied her.
"Why are you telling us?"
Her eyes filled.
"Because I think she's going to blame me."
I frowned.
"For what?"
Brianna looked at Dad.
"For helping her."
The room became very quiet.
Dad spoke first.
"Helping her do what?"
Brianna rubbed her hands together.
"She asked me to sign some papers last month."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What kind of papers?"
"I thought they were about family investments."
My stomach twisted.
"Did you read them?"
She shook her head.
"She told me not to worry."
Daniel exchanged a look with Dad.
"Do you have copies?"
Brianna reached into her bag and removed several folded pages.
Daniel examined them.
His expression became grim.
"These are witness declarations."
Dad frowned.
"Witnessing what?"
Daniel pointed to the bottom.
"A purported authorization signed by Richard."
Dad stared at the papers.
"I never signed that."
Brianna began crying.
"Mom told me you had."
I watched her carefully.
For years, Brianna had enjoyed every advantage Vanessa gave her.
She laughed when I was humiliated.
She took my things without asking.
She made sure I understood that I was less important.
Now she was frightened because her mother's choices might hurt her.
I couldn't ignore the difference.
"Brianna," I said quietly, "did you know Mom was taking money intended for me?"
She looked away.
That was enough.
My stomach sank.
"You knew."
She began shaking her head.
"Not everything."
"But you knew something."
"Mom said Dad was paying for my education and yours from different accounts."
I stared at her.
"You told me I was pathetic for having student loans."
She covered her face.
"I know."
"And you knew you were driving a car paid for with money Dad believed was supporting me?"
She whispered, "I suspected."
The words hurt more than I expected.
Because they confirmed something I had always feared.
Brianna wasn't merely following Vanessa.
She had understood enough to know I was suffering.
And she had chosen to enjoy it.
Dad spoke coldly.
"Thank you for bringing the documents. Daniel will arrange for you to speak with the investigators."
Brianna looked up.
"Am I going to jail?"
Daniel answered carefully.
"That depends on what you knew, what you signed, and whether you cooperate truthfully."
She turned to me.
"Emma, please."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"Tell them I didn't mean to hurt anyone."
Tears filled my eyes.
"You did hurt someone."
She stared at me.
"Me."
Brianna lowered her head.
For once, she had nothing cruel to say.
After she left, I went into the hallway.
I needed air.
Dad followed me.
"Are you okay?"
I leaned against the wall.
"No."
He stood beside me.
"I keep thinking about all the times I tried to make them like me."
My voice broke.
"I bought Brianna birthday presents. I helped her study. I defended her when my friends said she was mean."
Dad's eyes filled.
"Emma."
"And she knew."
I covered my mouth.
"She knew what was happening."
Dad hugged me.
This time, I didn't pull away.
I cried against his jacket until my chest hurt.
He didn't tell me to stop.
He didn't promise expensive gifts.
He simply stayed.
Later that afternoon, Daniel called us back into the conference room.
He had received preliminary information about the attempted transfer.
"The destination account is associated with a company called Meridian Capital Holdings."
Dad frowned.
"Gregory's investment firm."
Daniel nodded.
"But there's another problem."
I looked at him.
"What now?"
"Meridian recently acquired debt secured by several assets connected to Bennett Properties."
Dad went pale.
"That's impossible. Our financing is current."
Daniel placed a document on the table.
"Not according to the records filed last month."
Dad stared at it.
Then he slowly sat down.
I had never seen him look so frightened.
"Richard?" Daniel asked.
Dad whispered, "If those documents are accepted, Gregory could try to take control of the company."
I looked between them.
"The company Mom helped build?"
Dad nodded.
"Yes."
A terrible realization settled over me.
Vanessa hadn't simply been stealing money.
May you like
She and Gregory had been positioning themselves to take everything.
And the only reason their plan had begun falling apart was that my father had finally refused to leave me standing outside a limousine.
