Surprise

Chapter 5

Jasmine Price arrived at Samuel's office carrying a cardboard box.

She was thirty-one, neatly dressed, and visibly nervous.

I sat beside Samuel while she placed the box on the conference table.

“Thank you for meeting me,” she whispered.

Samuel nodded.

“Please understand that we'll review anything you provide and determine what can properly be preserved or reported.”

Jasmine looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I'm sorry about what happened at the party.”

I studied her face.

“Were you there?”

She nodded.

“I was helping coordinate the event.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you see Vanessa throw my things outside?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you help me?”

She lowered her head.

“I was afraid of losing my job.”

I sat quietly.

That answer hurt.

But it was honest.

Jasmine continued.

“Vanessa told us that anyone who interfered with family matters would be fired immediately.”

I nodded slowly.

“She has a talent for making people afraid.”

Jasmine wiped her cheeks.

“I'm ashamed I stayed silent.”

I looked at her.

“You're speaking now.”

She nodded.

Then she opened the box.

Inside were event schedules, invoices, printed emails, and copies of financial presentations.

She placed the first document in front of us.

It was titled:

BLACKSTONE EVENTS GROUP — PRIVATE INVESTOR RECEPTION.

The date matched Noah's birthday.

I stared at it.

“My grandson's party?”

Jasmine nodded.

“Vanessa planned two events at the same time.”

She explained that Noah's birthday celebration served as a cover for an investor presentation.

Vanessa invited several wealthy acquaintances and business partners.

The children's entertainment occupied the backyard.

Meanwhile, the adults were supposed to gather in the dining room for a private announcement.

I felt sick.

“What announcement?”

Jasmine turned another page.

It contained a photograph of the mansion.

Below it were the words:

CARTER HOUSE — FLAGSHIP PROPERTY OF BLACKSTONE LUXURY COLLECTION.

I stared at the page.

Vanessa had been advertising my home as part of her business.

Samuel leaned forward.

“Was this distributed?”

“Not formally. Vanessa wanted to make the announcement after the cake.”

I swallowed.

“Why did she throw me out before the cake?”

Jasmine hesitated.

“Because Victor Hayes was there, and he told her you might recognize him.”

I closed my eyes.

That matched Marcus's explanation.

Jasmine continued.

“Vanessa also knew you might challenge the claim that the property belonged to her company.”

I looked at her.

“Did she know the house belonged to the trust?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“She knew.”

My hands tightened around the edge of the table.

For years, Vanessa had called me confused whenever I mentioned the trust.

She said I didn't understand modern property arrangements.

She insisted Marcus had full authority.

Now I knew she wasn't mistaken.

She had been lying.

Samuel turned another page.

It contained a financing summary.

The amount requested was four hundred thousand dollars.

The same amount Marcus admitted signing for.

Jasmine pointed to a section near the bottom.

“Vanessa told the investors the financing was backed by family real estate.”

Samuel frowned.

“Did she claim ownership?”

“She said the property was controlled by her husband.”

I stared at the page.

Then Jasmine pulled out another document.

“This is what got me fired.”

She placed an email on the table.

Vanessa had instructed her to change the ownership description from “family trust property” to “company-controlled asset.”

Jasmine refused.

She said the records didn't support that statement.

Vanessa accused her of disloyalty and dismissed her.

Samuel read the email carefully.

“Do you have the original electronic messages?”

“Yes.”

“We'll discuss the appropriate way to preserve them.”

Jasmine nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter, there is something about Noah.”

My heart jumped.

“What about him?”

She hesitated.

“He overheard Vanessa talking to Victor.”

I leaned forward.

“When?”

“The afternoon before his party.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did he hear?”

Jasmine looked down.

“He asked why Grandma wasn't allowed at the big dinner.”

I closed my eyes.

“She had already decided to exclude me.”

Jasmine nodded.

“Vanessa said you were embarrassing and that the family needed to move forward without you.”

My throat tightened.

Then Jasmine continued.

“Noah started crying. He said Grandma was family.”

Tears slid down my cheeks.

“What did Vanessa do?”

“She told him not to be dramatic.”

I pressed a tissue against my mouth.

Jasmine wiped her eyes.

“He asked whether you would still love him if you weren't invited.”

I began sobbing.

My grandson had been frightened that the adults' cruelty might take me away from him.

And nobody had protected him from that fear.

Samuel gave me a moment.

When I could breathe again, Jasmine continued.

“There's one more document.”

She removed a small folder.

Inside was a proposed agreement listing Blackstone Events Group as an operator of the mansion for exclusive events.

The agreement contained a signature attributed to Marcus.

But beneath it was another name.

Evelyn Carter.

My name.

I stared at the page.

“I never signed this.”

Samuel examined it.

His expression darkened.

“Was this submitted to anyone?”

Jasmine nodded.

“It was included in an investor information package.”

My heart pounded.

“Who signed my name?”

“I don't know.”

She looked frightened.

“But Vanessa told me the signature was handled.”

Samuel placed the document in a separate folder.

“We'll have this reviewed.”

I leaned back.

For years, I had worried that Vanessa disliked me.

Now I understood that dislike was only part of the problem.

She had apparently been trying to use my property, my family name, and my husband's legacy to build a business around lies.

And Marcus had allowed it.

After Jasmine left, I asked Samuel a question.

“Can we stop this?”

He looked at me.

“We can protect the trust's interests and challenge unauthorized claims. But we have to follow the process.”

I nodded.

“I don't want revenge.”

“I know.”

“I want Noah safe. I want Daniel's legacy protected. And I want Marcus to understand what his silence has allowed.”

Samuel studied me.

“Then we need to separate those goals from your anger.”

I nodded again.

That evening, I returned to the hotel.

My phone rang as I entered the room.

It was Noah.

I answered immediately.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

“Grandma?”

His little voice trembled.

I sat down.

“Yes, baby.”

“Mommy says you're trying to take our house.”

My heart broke.

“Oh, Noah.”

He began crying.

“Are we going to be homeless?”

I closed my eyes.

Someone had frightened him with the legal dispute.

I took a slow breath.

“Sweetheart, the adults are working through a disagreement. You are not responsible for any of it.”

He sniffled.

“But will I still see you?”

“Of course I love you. I want to see you very much.”

There was a pause.

Then he whispered, “Daddy says Mommy is angry because you won't give her the house.”

I felt tears rise.

Before I could answer, Vanessa's voice sounded in the background.

“Noah! Who are you talking to?”

He gasped.

“Grandma, I have to go.”

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Then a message arrived from Vanessa.

Stop contacting my son. You're making him choose sides.

I read it twice.

May you like

For the first time, I understood that Vanessa wasn't merely trying to control the house.

She was trying to control who Noah was allowed to love.
