Surprise

Chapter 7

After the safe house breach, Detective Avery stopped pretending this was only a local case.

By sunrise, federal agents arrived.

Their lead investigator was Special Agent Maya Ross.

She looked at me once and said, “Your daughter is alive because she listens.”

I liked her immediately.

Lily liked her badge.

Agent Ross moved us to a federal protection apartment with no address I was allowed to know.

They took our phones.

They took my watch.

They checked Claire’s scarves for trackers.

They found one.

Small.

Flat.

Hidden in the stitched hem of the blue scarf Lily carried everywhere.

I had to sit down.

Nora had followed my child through her mother’s memory.

Lily watched the agent place the scarf in an evidence bag.

Her lip trembled.

“Mommy’s.”

I knelt in front of her.

“We will get it back when it is safe.”

“Bad lady touched it?”

“Yes.”

Lily’s little face hardened.

“Then wash it.”

Agent Ross turned away, blinking fast.

I nearly smiled through the pain.

That afternoon, Nora was moved to federal custody.

Mark tried to trade testimony for leniency.

Nora’s attorney lost his license and his freedom.

The compromised officer at the safe house was arrested.

Still, Agent Ross warned me.

“Nora has money hidden. She has fake identities. And she has one more reason to fight.”

“What reason?”

Ross placed a document on the table.

A fertility clinic record.

Nora had created embryos using stolen access to my medical records and a forged consent form.

My stomach turned.

“She planned a child with me?”

“She planned a legal claim to the Whitmore estate.”

I felt sick.

“Did she succeed?”

“No viable transfer. But she used the paperwork to present herself as your intended future heir’s mother.”

“That’s insane.”

“It’s also calculated.”

Evelyn Grant arrived an hour later with more bad news.

“Nora filed an emergency motion before her attorney was arrested. She claimed Lily is psychologically unstable and unsafe in your custody.”

I laughed because rage had nowhere else to go.

“She tried to poison me, threatened my child, and sent someone through a closet.”

“Yes,” Evelyn said. “And her motion will fail. But the hearing gives her a stage.”

Of course.

Nora wanted a courtroom.

She wanted cameras.

She wanted one more chance to turn herself into the crying woman on the floor.

I looked at Lily coloring at the kitchen table.

“What do we do?”

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

“We let Claire speak.”

The trial judge allowed Claire’s video under emergency evidentiary rules.

Nora’s team fought hard.

They said Claire was paranoid.

They said Lily was coached.

They said I was violent.

Then Agent Ross played the dining room video.
