Chapter 6

Claire’s flash drive changed everything.
The first file was a video.
She had recorded it in Lily’s playroom.
Her face looked pale.
Her voice was steady because Claire had always been strongest when fear tried to corner her.
“Daniel,” she said on screen, “I hope I’m wrong.”
I sank into a chair.
Lily sat on my lap, holding Claire’s scarf.
She did not fully understand.
But she knew her mother’s voice.
“Mommy,” she whispered.
Claire continued.
“Nora Bell has contacted Mark. I saw messages on his phone during your birthday dinner. She is using his debts and resentment. I don’t know if he understands how dangerous she is.”
Mark stood near the wall, gray-faced.
Evelyn Grant kept watching him like she was ready to call officers back in.
Claire looked down in the video, then back up.
“I found altered medication in my cabinet. I found someone accessed your insurance portal. I found a draft petition questioning my mental state.”
My chest hurt.
“She told me,” I whispered. “She said she felt watched.”
And I had told her grief could make shadows feel bigger.
God.
Claire on screen took a shaking breath.
“If something happens to me, protect Lily from anyone who tries to call her confused. She notices everything. Believe her.”
Lily pressed her face into my shirt.
I held her and cried silently.
The next folder contained screenshots.
Emails between Nora and Mark.
At first, Nora sounded sympathetic.
Then flirtatious.
Then calculating.
Mark had given her passwords.
Security schedules.
The code to our side gate.
The name of Claire’s mechanic.
Mark whispered, “I didn’t know she’d hurt anyone.”
I turned slowly.
“You gave her Claire’s mechanic?”
“She said Claire was hiding financial records in the car.”
“You gave her access to my wife’s car.”
He covered his face.
“I was angry.”
“So was she. That didn’t make either of you right.”
Evelyn opened the notarized statement.
“Claire also changed Lily’s trust terms before she died,” she said.
“What terms?”
“If both parents were incapacitated or deceased under suspicious circumstances, Mark could not control the trust.”
Mark looked up sharply.
“What?”
Evelyn’s voice was cold.
“Claire removed you.”
His face twisted.
“She had no right.”
“There it is,” I said.
He realized too late what he had revealed.
Evelyn continued.
“The successor trustee is me until Lily turns twenty-five.”
Relief hit so hard I nearly shook.
Nora’s plan had already failed before she poured the tea.
She just did not know it.
Detective Avery used Claire’s evidence to secure new warrants.
Mark was arrested for conspiracy, unlawful access, and obstruction.
He cried when officers cuffed him.
“Daniel, I’m your brother.”
I stood with Lily in my arms.
“You stopped being my brother when you sold my family’s safety.”
He looked at Lily.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily hid her face.
That was answer enough.
Nora’s attorney was searched next.
They found sealed envelopes from Nora hidden in his private case.
Instructions.
Names.
Payments.
One note mentioned “Plan C.”
Detective Avery showed it to me in the hotel conference room.
“What is Plan C?”
“I was hoping you knew.”
I stared at the page.
Plan A had been Claire.
Plan B had been me.
Plan C had to be Lily.
My body went cold.
“We need to move my daughter again.”
“We are.”
Before sunset, we were taken to a lakeside safe house two counties away.
No staff.
No large windows.
No predictable routine.
Lily slept in the room beside mine with a baby monitor camera on the dresser and two officers outside.
Still, I did not sleep.
At 2:13 a.m., the monitor crackled.
Lily sat up in bed.
“Daddy?”
I ran before she finished the word.
She pointed toward the closet.
“Mommy said don’t open doors at night.”
I grabbed her and backed away.
The closet door opened one inch.
A man’s hand appeared.
Then Detective Avery burst through the bedroom door with his weapon drawn.
“Police! Show me your hands!”
A man crawled out from a crawlspace behind the closet.
He wore a maintenance uniform.
In his pocket was a syringe, zip ties, and a note.
Deliver child before dawn.
Lily screamed.
I held her so tightly she cried into my neck.
The man was dragged away.
Detective Avery stared at the open crawlspace, furious.
“The safe house was compromised.”
“How?”
He did not answer.
He did not need to.

Someone inside law enforcement had helped Nora again.
And this time, she had come for my daughter.
