Surprise

Chapter 8

When I reached the apartment building, three police vehicles were parked outside.

My heart was pounding so hard that I could feel it in my throat.

I showed my identification and approached the officer guarding the entrance.

"My mother and sister are inside."

He nodded.

"They're safe."

I nearly collapsed with relief.

"What happened?"

"A man attempted to force entry into the apartment. The security officer stopped him before he reached the residents."

"Where is he?"

"In custody."

"Was anyone hurt?"

"The security officer has a minor injury. Your family wasn't touched."

I exhaled.

Then I hurried upstairs.

Vanessa opened the apartment door before I could knock.

She threw herself into my arms.

"Emily!"

I held her tightly.

"I'm here."

She was shaking.

I looked over her shoulder.

Mom sat on the couch.

Her face was pale, but she appeared unharmed.

I walked toward her.

"Are you okay?"

She nodded.

Then reached for me.

I hugged her.

For several moments, none of us spoke.

I had commanded soldiers in dangerous situations.

I had made decisions where lives depended on seconds.

But nothing had ever frightened me like hearing my sister scream over the phone.

Vanessa pulled away.

"He said Dad sent him."

I froze.

"Who did?"

"The man outside."

"What exactly did he say?"

She swallowed.

"He kept shouting that we needed to stop talking to investigators."

I looked at Mom.

Her face crumpled.

"I knew Richard wouldn't leave us alone."

I took her hands.

"He's not going to decide what happens to us anymore."

For the first time, she nodded without arguing.

Later that evening, Sarah arrived with news.

The detained man had been identified as an employee of a private security company connected to Arthur Bellamy.

Investigators were examining whether Bellamy had directed the attempted intimidation.

There was no immediate proof Richard had ordered it.

But the connection was serious.

"Bellamy's attorney denies everything," Sarah explained.

I wasn't surprised.

"What's next?"

"We've obtained warrants for additional financial records."

"Any progress on the missing files?"

"Yes."

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs of financial ledgers and correspondence.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

Evidence that suggested years of organized deception.

Sarah tapped one photograph.

"This payment was authorized shortly before Thomas Reed disappeared."

I studied it.

Arthur Bellamy's company.

A private transport contractor.

And Richard's signature.

My stomach tightened.

"Does it connect them directly?"

"To the transaction, yes. We still need to establish the full criminal purpose."

I nodded.

She looked at me carefully.

"Emily, there's something personal we need to discuss."

I glanced toward Mom and Vanessa.

They were sitting together near the window.

"What?"

"Thomas has agreed to a DNA test."

My breath caught.

Sarah continued.

"An accredited laboratory can establish whether he's your biological father. It won't affect the criminal case, but I understand it's important to your family."

I sat very still.

For days, I had been so focused on the investigation that I'd barely allowed myself to think about it.

I had called Thomas by his first name.

I had held his hand.

I had cried when he said he was proud of me.

But I still didn't know whether we shared blood.

"Let's do it," I whispered.

Mom looked over.

She understood immediately.

Her eyes filled with tears.

I walked toward her.

"Are you okay with this?"

She nodded.

"You deserve the truth."

Vanessa stood beside us.

Then she said something that surprised me.

"Whatever the results say, you're still my sister."

I looked at her.

She wiped her cheeks.

"Don't look so shocked."

I laughed softly.

She hugged me.

"I mean it."

For the first time, I believed her.

The next three weeks changed everything.

Investigators worked through thousands of pages of financial records.

Thomas gave several recorded statements with his attorney present.

Claudia Price agreed to cooperate after receiving legal advice.

She admitted that her false identification and the attempted removal of documents had been part of a plan to protect Richard's financial interests.

Daniel also cooperated.

He provided copies of business agreements, messages, and records of conversations with Richard.

I stayed out of the criminal interviews.

But I received authorized security briefings, helped coordinate the protection of threatened witnesses, and continued doing the military job I had sworn to perform.

The evidence grew stronger.

Arthur Bellamy was arrested on federal charges involving fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction.

Richard faced additional charges after investigators uncovered records contradicting his account of Thomas Reed's disappearance.

Their attorneys challenged the evidence.

The courts would decide what was admissible.

But the wall of secrecy was collapsing.

Then one afternoon, I received the call I had been waiting for.

The DNA results were ready.

I met Thomas at the medical center.

Mom came with me.

Vanessa insisted on joining us.

We sat together in a quiet room while a counselor explained the report.

My hands were shaking.

I had faced gunfire without trembling this much.

The counselor looked at me.

"The result establishes a greater than 99.99 percent probability of paternity."

I stared at her.

Thomas Reed was my biological father.

I heard Mom begin to cry.

Vanessa squeezed my hand.

Thomas covered his face.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he looked at me.

"My daughter."

His voice broke.

"My beautiful daughter."

I stood.

He rose slowly from his chair.

And we embraced.

I felt his arms close around me.

Not tightly.

Not possessively.

Just warmly.

As though he was afraid of hurting something precious.

"I'm sorry I missed your childhood," he whispered.

I pressed my face against his shoulder.

"I wish you'd been there."

"I know."

"I needed you."

His breath trembled.

"I know."

We held each other while Mom cried beside us.

Then Thomas pulled back.

He looked at Vanessa.

"And you must be Emily's little sister."

Vanessa nodded shyly.

He smiled.

"She's told me how brave you've been."

My sister burst into tears.

"She said that?"

I smiled.

"Don't let it go to your head."

Vanessa laughed through her tears.

Thomas held out his hand.

She took it.

For the first time, I saw my family gathered around something other than fear.

We were gathered around love.

But our peace was interrupted the following morning.

Sarah called with urgent news.

Richard's attorneys had requested a confidential meeting concerning a possible cooperation agreement.

He was willing to identify other people involved in the Silver Bridge scheme.

But he had attached a condition.

He wanted to speak to me.

Alone.

I told Sarah that any such meeting would require proper legal supervision.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"What does he want to say?"

Sarah paused.

"According to his attorney, he wants to explain why he treated you differently from Vanessa."

I closed my eyes.

For forty-one years, I had wondered about that.

Now the man who had hurt me most was offering an answer.

May you like

And I didn't know whether hearing it would finally set me free.

Or break my heart one last time.
