Surprise

Chapter 2

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

My father's words kept repeating inside my head.

Your mother knows about him.

I turned toward Mom.

She stood beside Vanessa, one trembling hand pressed against her mouth.

Her eyes were fixed on the photograph.

"Mom?"

She shook her head.

Not in denial.

In warning.

"Emily, please."

I had heard my mother use that voice before.

When Dad screamed at me for applying to the academy.

When I came home with bruises after he grabbed my arm during an argument.

When I asked why he refused to discuss his military career.

She always said the same thing.

Please.

Please stop asking.

Please don't upset him.

Please keep the peace.

But this was different.

This time, people might have died because of what my father had done.

"Who is this man?" I asked.

Mom looked at Dad.

He was staring at her with naked fear.

"Margaret," he said sharply.

"Don't."

Marcus moved beside me.

"General, we need to secure the principal subject."

I nodded.

Two federal agents approached Dad.

Vanessa immediately stepped between them.

"What is going on?"

One agent held up his identification.

"Ma'am, please step aside."

"No!"

She turned toward me.

"Emily, stop this!"

"Vanessa, move."

"You're ruining my wedding!"

Her voice echoed across the ballroom.

I felt hundreds of eyes on me.

Guests were recording.

Some were crying.

Others whispered my name as if they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

I had expected anger.

I had expected confusion.

But I hadn't expected the pain of watching my sister look at me as though I were her enemy.

"This isn't about your wedding," I said.

"Then why today?"

"Because the operation could not be delayed."

She laughed bitterly.

"Of course. Your precious job comes before everyone."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Vanessa, sweetheart, maybe we should listen."

She turned on him.

"Don't tell me to calm down!"

He raised both hands.

"I'm not."

I looked at Marcus.

"Have the guests escorted to the reception garden. Keep the exits controlled until the security screening is complete."

"Understood."

The agents began guiding people toward a side entrance.

No one was handcuffed.

No one was threatened.

But everyone could feel the seriousness of what was happening.

Dad suddenly reached into his jacket.

Three agents moved at once.

"Hands where we can see them!"

He froze.

Then slowly withdrew a handkerchief.

"I need my lawyer," he said.

"You'll have that opportunity," one agent replied.

Mom began to cry.

I wanted to embrace her.

Instead, I held out the photograph.

"Tell me his name."

She stared at it.

Then she whispered, "Thomas."

Dad closed his eyes.

"Margaret."

"Thomas who?"

My mother looked directly at me.

"Thomas Reed."

The name struck me like a physical blow.

Captain Thomas Reed.

Listed as killed during a classified military transport operation twenty-eight years earlier.

His death had been central to the investigation.

According to the recovered records, he had tried to report missing military equipment and diverted funds.

The official report claimed he died during an aircraft accident overseas.

But investigators had discovered evidence that the accident never happened.

I looked at the photograph again.

Thomas Reed.

My father.

A third officer whose identity had been partially concealed.

"How did you know him?" I asked Mom.

She swallowed.

"We were friends."

Dad gave a harsh laugh.

"That's a convenient word."

Mom flinched.

Something cold settled in my stomach.

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing," Dad snapped.

"Richard, enough," Mom whispered.

I had never heard her speak to him like that.

Dad stared at her.

She stared back.

For the first time, she did not look away.

"Thomas was your father's closest friend," she said.

I felt a flicker of relief.

Then she continued.

"And before I married Richard, Thomas and I were engaged."

The ballroom seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"What?"

Vanessa stopped crying.

Even Daniel looked stunned.

Dad's face twisted.

"Tell her the whole story, Margaret."

Mom wiped her cheeks.

"Thomas was sent overseas. Richard told me he'd been killed."

I looked at Dad.

"You told her he was dead?"

"He was supposed to be."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Marcus immediately glanced toward the investigators.

I watched one of them make a note.

Mom stared at Dad.

"Richard?"

He said nothing.

Her face changed.

I had spent my life believing my mother was weak.

Now I realized she had been living beside a man whose secrets were finally becoming visible.

"Did you know he was alive?" she asked.

Dad's silence was answer enough.

She staggered backward.

Daniel caught her elbow.

I moved closer to Dad.

"Where is Thomas Reed?"

"I don't know."

"Where?"

"I said I don't know!"

His voice filled the room.

For a brief moment, I saw the father I remembered.

The one who could silence a dinner table with a single shout.

But the agents did not retreat.

Neither did I.

I opened the authorization packet and placed a copy of the legal notice in front of him.

"Richard Carter, investigators have secured a federal warrant concerning suspected unlawful retention of defense information, financial crimes, and obstruction of a federal investigation."

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then his expression changed again.

"You don't understand who you're dealing with."

"Then explain it."

He leaned toward me.

"Some people are much more powerful than your little investigation."

I met his stare.

"Then they can explain themselves too."

Marcus approached.

"General, we need a word."

We stepped several feet away.

He lowered his voice.

"Our search team found a secured storage compartment beneath the venue's private office."

"What was inside?"

"Old military documents. Encrypted drives. Financial ledgers."

I waited.

"And?"

"Photographs of Reed taken after his reported death."

My heart hammered.

"How recent?"

"One was taken eleven months ago."

I looked back at Mom.

She was sitting now, her hands shaking in her lap.

"Do we have a location?"

"Possibly."

Marcus hesitated.

"There's another complication."

I knew that tone.

"What complication?"

"The storage compartment wasn't registered to your father."

"Whose name was on it?"

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

"The groom's."

I stared at him.

Daniel was kneeling beside Vanessa, trying to comfort her.

He looked like a loving fiancé.

A concerned future son-in-law.

A man caught in someone else's disaster.

Then he raised his head.

For one brief second, his eyes met mine.

And I saw something I hadn't noticed before.

Recognition.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Recognition.

Marcus leaned closer.

"General, Daniel Mercer may be involved."

I looked toward my sister.

She was clinging to the man she had planned to marry.

And I realized our father's secret might have reached much further into our family than anyone imagined.

Then my communication device crackled.

"General Carter, security team reporting."

I touched my collar.

"Go ahead."

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

"The groom's private vehicle just attempted to leave through the service gate."

I looked at Daniel again.

He was still beside Vanessa.

Then I understood.

Someone else had his keys.

"Stop that vehicle," I ordered.

A moment later, the reply came.

"Vehicle stopped, ma'am."

I exhaled.

Then the voice returned.

"General, you need to see who's driving."

"Who is it?"

The answer made my blood turn cold.

"Your mother's name is on the driver's identification."

I turned around.

Mom was still sitting in front of me.

May you like

Which meant someone was using her identity.

And whoever they were had arrived prepared.
