Chapter 5

The Family Secret Nobody Wanted Exposed
I sat beside Lily until she fell asleep.
Her small hand remained wrapped around my finger.
Even in sleep, she seemed reluctant to let go.
I looked at her.
Then whispered, "Nobody is taking me away from you."
My mother stood near the doorway.
She had heard Lily's words.
New daddy.
Mom looked devastated.
"Marcus, we need to find out what Vanessa told her."
I nodded.
"But carefully."
I wasn't going to make Lily relive frightening memories simply because I wanted answers.
Detective Grant had recommended a child specialist.
I agreed.
The next day, a pediatric clinician examined Lily.
She documented the mark on her wrist and assessed her overall health.
Then a trained child interviewer arranged an age-appropriate conversation.
I waited outside.
Every minute felt unbearable.
When Lily emerged, she immediately reached for me.
I lifted her.
She tucked her face into my neck.
The interviewer later explained that Lily had described being placed in the dark room and being told to stay quiet.
She couldn't provide a reliable timeline.
That was understandable.
She was only two.
But the hotel footage already showed the essential events.
I held my daughter closer.
Then I went home and opened every financial record I could find.
Vanessa had been asking questions for months.
About Amara.
About the trust.
About Lily's future.
I needed to understand how deeply her family was involved.
My office contained old folders from Amara's estate.
Photographs.
Insurance documents.
Letters.
And a small notebook Amara had used during the final months of her life.
I hadn't opened it in years.
The grief was still too painful.
But that night, I finally did.
The first pages contained ordinary things.
Doctor appointments.
Questions for specialists.
Lists of baby supplies.
Then I reached a page marked with a red star.
CARTER MEDICAL INVESTMENTS.
My stomach tightened.
Carter.
Vanessa's family name.
I read carefully.
Amara had worked in financial compliance before becoming pregnant.
Her family's company supplied medical equipment to hospitals.
Shortly before her death, she'd discovered unusual transactions involving an outside investment group.
That group was connected to Leonard Carter.
I stared at the page.
Then I found a handwritten note.
Leonard wants access to voting shares. Refused. Something isn't right.
My hands began shaking.
I turned another page.
Amara had documented attempts to pressure her family into selling.
There were references to suspicious invoices.
Unexplained fees.
And payments to shell companies.
I looked toward her photograph on my desk.
She was smiling.
Holding Lily as a newborn.
I remembered how worried she'd been during the final weeks before her medical emergency.
She'd told me she was dealing with a difficult business matter.
I had urged her to rest.
She promised she'd handle it after Lily was born.
She never got the chance.
I kept reading.
Then I found something that made my blood run cold.
A letter addressed to her attorney.
If anything happens to me, make certain Lily's shares remain protected from Leonard Carter and his associates.
I froze.
Amara had known Leonard.
And she'd been worried about him.
Long before I met Vanessa.
I sat back.
I suddenly remembered the first time Vanessa approached me.
A charity event.
A fundraiser for children's hospitals.
She told me she'd heard about Amara.
She said she admired my devotion to Lily.
At the time, I thought it was fate.
A kind woman meeting a grieving father.
Now I wondered whether it had been arranged.
I called Rachel.
She answered despite the late hour.
"Marcus?"
"I found Amara's notebook."
Her tone changed.
"What does it contain?"
I explained.
A long silence followed.
Then she said, "We need to secure those records."
I swallowed.
"Rachel, did Amara ever tell you Leonard threatened her?"
Rachel hesitated.
"She expressed concerns about pressure to sell."
My stomach tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Some matters were confidential, and after her death, we focused on protecting the trust."
I looked down.
"Did Leonard know about Lily's shares?"
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
Rachel continued.
"He attempted to purchase them through an investment entity."
I stared.
"When?"
"Shortly after Amara died."
I closed my eyes.
"And you refused?"
"Absolutely."
I swallowed.
Then I asked the question I was afraid to hear answered.
"Did Leonard know Vanessa was dating me?"
Rachel paused.
"I don't know."
But I knew someone who might.
Simone.
Vanessa's younger sister.
She had looked uncomfortable during the reception.
She was also the only Carter family member who'd quietly approached me before the ceremony.
She'd asked whether Lily was staying upstairs.
When I said yes, her expression changed.
At the time, I didn't understand.
Now I did.
I called her.
She answered after several rings.
"Marcus?"
"Simone, I need to ask you something."
Her voice trembled.
"About Vanessa?"
"Yes."
A pause.
Then she whispered, "I've been waiting for you to call."
My stomach tightened.
"Why?"
"Because I know what happened at the reception."
I sat up.
"Tell me."
She hesitated.
"Not over the phone."
I felt cold.
"Simone."
"Please."
Her voice broke.
"My father checks everything."
I swallowed.
"Where can we meet?"
She gave me the address of a small coffee shop.
Then added one final sentence.
"Marcus, bring your attorney."
I froze.
"Why?"
She began crying.
"Because Vanessa didn't marry you by accident."
The call ended.
I sat alone in my office.
Amara's notebook lay open beside me.
Her photograph seemed to stare back.
For the first time, I understood that the betrayal might have begun before Vanessa ever entered our home.

And if Simone was telling the truth, my wife had been selected for one terrible purpose.
To get close enough to steal what belonged to my daughter.
