Surprise

Chapter 1

My mother-in-law grabbed the shoulder of my lavender maternity gown and ripped it open in front of nearly two hundred wedding guests.

The sound of tearing fabric echoed beneath the crystal chandeliers.

I screamed.

Both hands flew to my pregnant belly as I stumbled backward.

"SEARCH HER! SHE STOLE MY RING!"

Bianca, the bride, pointed at me like I was a criminal.

Her white wedding gown glittered beneath the ballroom lights.

Her blonde-highlighted hair fell over her shoulders.

And her face was twisted with hatred.

"I didn't take anything!" I cried.

Margaret grabbed my arm.

"Then why are you hiding, Serena?"

"I'm not hiding!"

She yanked my dress again.

The fabric tore farther down my shoulder.

I clutched it closed, terrified that everyone would see me exposed.

"Please stop! I'm eight months pregnant!"

Margaret ignored me.

Instead, she grabbed my purse.

"Let's see what you've stolen!"

She turned it upside down.

Everything scattered across the polished marble floor.

My phone.

My wallet.

A small packet of tissues.

My prenatal vitamins.

The tiny pink socks I'd bought for my unborn daughter.

I watched one of those socks slide beneath a table.

Something inside me broke.

My name is Serena Whitmore.

I was thirty-two years old, eight months pregnant, and standing in the middle of my husband's cousin's wedding reception.

Until that moment, I had believed the worst thing my husband's family could do was humiliate me with words.

I was wrong.

Bianca marched toward the scattered belongings.

"Where's my diamond ring?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know!"

She pointed at me.

"You're jealous because Adrian spends more money on his family than he spends on you!"

Guests began whispering.

Someone raised a phone.

A woman near the champagne tower gasped.

I looked toward my husband.

"Adrian!"

He stood only a few feet away in his dark formal suit.

His face was pale.

He took one step toward me.

Then stopped.

Margaret turned toward him.

"Don't interfere, son. Your wife needs to learn that stealing has consequences."

I stared at him.

"Adrian, tell them!"

His jaw tightened.

"Mom, maybe we should calm down."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Calm down?"

My voice cracked.

"Your mother just tore my dress!"

Bianca folded her arms.

"Then let us search you properly."

I backed away.

"Nobody is touching me again."

Margaret sneered.

"Look how defensive she is."

I pressed one hand against my belly.

My daughter moved beneath my palm.

For one brief moment, I forgot the crowd.

I thought only about protecting her.

Eight months earlier, Adrian and I had cried together when the pregnancy test turned positive.

We had chosen the name Grace.

We had painted her nursery cream and pale pink.

We had promised she would grow up surrounded by love.

Now I was standing barefoot on cold marble after one of my shoes had slipped off, desperately trying to keep my torn dress closed.

And her father was watching.

Bianca suddenly pointed toward the coatroom.

"She had access to my things before the reception!"

I looked at her.

"Because you asked me to help carry your flowers!"

"Exactly!"

She smiled.

"You had the perfect opportunity."

I stared at her.

Something about her expression was wrong.

She wasn't frightened about losing an expensive ring.

She looked excited.

As though she had been waiting for this moment.

Then I remembered what she'd said earlier that afternoon.

She had pulled me aside before the ceremony.

"Serena, you should be careful tonight."

I asked what she meant.

She smiled.

"Some people don't belong in a family like ours."

I thought she was referring to my background.

I'd grown up in a modest neighborhood outside Atlanta.

My father was a businessman, but he kept his wealth private.

I had built my own career as a financial compliance consultant.

Margaret hated that I worked.

She said Adrian needed a wife who understood her place.

Now I realized Bianca's warning might have meant something else.

I looked around the ballroom.

Security cameras hung near the ceiling.

One overlooked the coatroom entrance.

Another faced the reception tables.

And a third pointed toward the hallway where Bianca had embraced me before the ceremony.

My breathing slowed.

I knew something they didn't.

My father owned the company responsible for the venue's security systems.

And forty minutes earlier, he'd sent me a message.

"Serena, call me immediately if anyone confronts you. We've found something troubling."

I hadn't understood it then.

Now I did.

I reached for my phone.

Margaret stepped forward.

"What are you doing?"

I ignored her.

My hands shook as I dialed.

Dad answered immediately.

"Serena?"

I looked directly at Bianca.

"Dad."

My voice was suddenly steady.

"Release the footage."

Bianca's expression changed.

Her confident smile disappeared.

Margaret frowned.

"What footage?"

My father's voice came through the speaker.

"Stay where you are, sweetheart."

I swallowed.

"Okay."

"Are you safe?"

I looked down at my torn gown.

Then at Adrian.

"I am now."

The line remained open.

Suddenly, the ballroom doors burst wide.

Four security officers entered.

Their black suits and serious expressions drew everyone's attention.

The music stopped.

A senior officer approached the stage.

"Everyone, please remain where you are while we address a security incident."

Bianca stepped backward.

Margaret's eyes widened.

"What is this nonsense?"

The enormous screen above the dance floor flickered.

The wedding slideshow disappeared.

A security camera recording appeared.

I heard someone gasp.

The footage showed the hallway outside the coatroom.

Bianca stood beside me.

I was holding a flower arrangement.

She smiled and leaned close.

Then her hand moved toward the coat draped over my arm.

The camera angle was perfect.

Her fingers opened.

A large diamond ring slipped into my coat pocket.

She stepped away as though nothing had happened.

The ballroom erupted.

"She planted it!"

"Oh my God!"

"Bianca did it herself!"

Bianca staggered backward.

Her face went white.

Margaret stared at the screen.

Adrian turned toward his cousin.

"What did you do?"

I couldn't speak.

My knees trembled.

The lead security officer raised his hand.

"That isn't the only recording."

The ballroom fell silent again.

Bianca looked toward the screen.

Her lips parted.

"No..."

Another video file appeared.

Its title contained yesterday's date.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Bianca.

She was trembling so badly that her jeweled hairpiece rattled.

My father's voice came through my phone.

"Serena, there's something your husband needs to see."

Adrian looked at me.

"What is it?"

I swallowed.

May you like

The next video began loading.

And from the terror on Bianca's face, I knew the missing ring was only the beginning.
