Surprise

Chapter 5

Marcus immediately took the phone from Vanessa, careful not to delete the message.

Daniel photographed the screen and contacted the authorities handling the case.

The threat changed everything.

Until then, I had believed my mother wanted money and control. Now I understood that someone else might be directing her actions.

Someone who was willing to threaten me to protect a financial scheme.

Marcus ordered additional security for Lily and me.

I hated that it was necessary, but I no longer argued.

Vanessa sat across from me, trembling.

"Calvin sent that message," she whispered.

"How do you know?"

"Because he told me once that if I ever betrayed him, he would make sure I lost everything."

I looked at her.

"Why were you working with him?"

She pressed her hands against her forehead.

"Mom introduced us. She said he could help me build a business without relying on Marcus."

"What business?"

"A luxury event company."

I remembered the company launch Vanessa had invited me to attend. She had talked about investors, partnerships, and future contracts.

I had congratulated her.

I had even offered to help when she complained about the paperwork.

"Did you know the money came from Marcus's company?"

"No. Not at first."

"When did you find out?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Two months ago."

The answer struck me like another shove.

"You knew for two months?"

"I thought it was temporary. Calvin said the transfers were authorized, and Mom showed me documents."

"You had time to ask questions."

"I was afraid."

I leaned forward.

"You weren't afraid when you stood beside Mom and let her humiliate me. You weren't afraid when she pushed us into the ocean. You were afraid of losing money."

Vanessa began sobbing.

I felt no satisfaction watching her cry.

I had wanted my sister to stand up for me for most of my life. Now that she finally seemed ready to speak, I didn't know whether I could trust a single word.

Marcus pulled a chair beside mine.

"We don't have to decide what happens to Vanessa tonight," he said quietly. "Right now, we protect our family and find the truth."

Daniel returned with an update from the authorities.

The yacht's cameras had captured Calvin entering a restricted corridor shortly before the confrontation. He had left through a service entrance after the fall.

The captain had also preserved recordings of Diane speaking to him earlier that evening.

One conversation stood out.

Diane had told Calvin that the original agreement was in Marcus's possession and that they needed to recover it before the authorities arrived.

Calvin had replied, "If the transfer fails, the backup plan starts."

Nobody knew what that meant.

Daniel asked Vanessa whether she had any documents from Northbridge Consulting.

She remembered an encrypted storage drive she had kept at her apartment.

Calvin had told her it contained investment records and instructed her never to connect it to a personal computer.

Marcus immediately contacted a digital forensics specialist.

We arranged for the drive to be collected under the specialist's supervision.

I wanted to go with them.

Marcus refused.

"Not while somebody is threatening you."

"I'm not going to hide from them forever."

"No. But you don't have to walk into danger to prove you're brave."

His words softened something in me.

I had spent years believing that protecting my family meant enduring everything without complaint. Marcus reminded me that accepting help wasn't weakness.

Lily eventually fell asleep in a private cabin, curled against a pillow with her favorite stuffed rabbit.

I sat beside her until Marcus returned.

"The drive contains records," he said. "Bank transfers, scanned agreements, and emails."

"Can they prove what happened?"

"Some of it. Daniel is working with investigators to verify the records."

He sat beside me.

"There is something else."

I waited.

"One of the emails suggests that Diane planned to claim you had stolen money from the company."

My stomach tightened.

"Me?"

"She intended to use your name as the explanation for several missing transfers."

I remembered the years Diane had accused me of being selfish, dishonest, and jealous of Vanessa.

She had been building a story about me long before the yacht incident.

"Why would she choose me?"

"Because you have no position in the company. She thought people would believe you had access through me but no way to defend yourself."

I stared at Lily sleeping peacefully.

My mother had planned to destroy my reputation, perhaps even threaten my freedom, while pretending to be a loving grandmother.

"Did she really hate me that much?"

Marcus took my hand.

"This isn't about your worth. It's about what she wanted and what she was willing to do to get it."

A message arrived from Daniel.

The investigators had found a payment from Northbridge Consulting to a company registered under a different name.

The company belonged to someone connected to Diane's past.

Marcus read the name twice.

Then he looked at me.

"It isn't Calvin's company receiving the largest share."

"Whose is it?"

He turned the phone toward me.

The account was registered to a business controlled by my mother's former husband.

May you like

Vanessa's biological father.

The man Diane had always claimed abandoned her and left the family with nothing.
