Surprise

Chapter 7

I stared at Danielle across her desk.

"Why would Vanessa pay extra for Daniel to have unsupervised access to Lily?"

My voice sounded distant.

As if someone else were asking the question.

Danielle folded her hands.

"That's something investigators are examining."

Marcus sat beside me.

His face was tense.

"Does it mean they were planning to take her?"

"We don't know that," Danielle said carefully.

"But the language is troubling, and it's important not to jump to conclusions before the documents are verified."

I looked at the agreement.

It was several pages long.

The wording was deliberately vague.

There were references to introductions, family meetings, public appearances, and increased parental access.

Then the payment schedule.

Twenty thousand dollars after initial contact.

Fifteen thousand after the public confrontation.

Ten thousand after filing the parentage petition.

And another fifty thousand if Daniel obtained unsupervised time with Lily.

My stomach turned.

"They made a business arrangement out of my daughter."

Danielle nodded sadly.

"That is how the document reads."

Marcus's hands curled into fists.

I touched his arm.

He took a slow breath.

"Tell us what to do."

Danielle explained that the records had been referred for investigation.

She also said we needed to remain focused on Lily's safety and avoid any direct confrontation with Daniel or Vanessa.

We agreed.

But the hardest part wasn't sitting through legal meetings.

It was going home and pretending everything was normal.

Lily still wanted pancakes.

She still asked me to read the same bedtime story three times.

She still loved jumping into Marcus's arms whenever he came home from work.

And every time I watched her smile, I wondered how anyone could look at such an innocent child and see an opportunity to make money.

Two days later, Marcus and I met with a child therapist named Dr. Angela Harris.

We wanted guidance on how to explain the family situation without frightening Lily.

Dr. Harris listened carefully.

Then she said something I would never forget.

"Children don't need every adult detail. They need honest, age-appropriate explanations and reassurance that they are loved."

I nodded.

"She keeps asking whether Marcus is her real father."

Dr. Harris looked at him.

"How do you answer?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I tell her I'm her daddy."

She smiled.

"That's meaningful. But as Lily grows, she'll also need truthful information about her biological history."

I looked down.

That was the part I'd been avoiding.

Not because I wanted to lie to my daughter.

But because I didn't know how to explain that her biological father was someone I feared.

Dr. Harris leaned forward.

"Nia, you can explain that Lily has a biological father and that Marcus became her father through love and caregiving. You don't have to describe every frightening experience."

I nodded slowly.

"And what if she wants to meet Daniel?"

"Then you address that question with professional guidance, attention to her safety, and the legal arrangements in place."

Marcus took my hand.

For the first time, I realized we didn't have to solve Lily's entire future that day.

We only needed to make the next responsible decision.

That evening, we sat with Lily in her bedroom.

She was wearing pink pajamas and hugging her stuffed rabbit.

Marcus sat beside her.

I sat on the other side.

"Sweetheart," I began, "remember what Grandma said at church?"

Lily nodded.

Her expression changed.

"That I don't belong?"

My heart tightened.

"No, baby. That's not true."

Marcus gently took her hand.

"You belong right here."

She looked at him.

"Then why did Grandma say that?"

I took a breath.

"Because Grandma was angry and said something hurtful. Adults can make wrong choices too."

Lily frowned.

"Even grandmas?"

"Even grandmas."

She thought about that.

Then asked, "Who is Daniel?"

I glanced at Marcus.

He squeezed my hand.

I looked back at my daughter.

"Daniel is the man who helped make you before you were born."

Lily blinked.

"Like how babies grow in tummies?"

"Yes."

She looked at Marcus.

"But you're my daddy."

He smiled gently.

"Yes, princess."

She considered this for a moment.

Then shrugged.

"Okay."

I almost laughed from relief.

Children sometimes understand love more simply than adults do.

But then Lily asked another question.

"Does Daniel love me?"

My heart stopped.

I didn't know what to say.

Marcus looked at me.

I chose my words carefully.

"I don't know exactly what Daniel feels, sweetheart. But I do know that you are loved very much by us."

She nodded.

Then climbed into Marcus's lap.

"Can we read the bunny book?"

He smiled.

"Of course."

And for twenty minutes, our biggest problem was whether a fictional rabbit could fit inside a tiny toy car.

I treasured every second.

The next afternoon, Evelyn asked to meet Marcus.

He refused at first.

But after speaking with Danielle, he agreed to a supervised conversation at her office.

I chose not to attend.

I wasn't ready.

When Marcus returned home, he looked exhausted.

I met him at the door.

"How did it go?"

He removed his jacket.

"She cried."

I waited.

"She admitted Vanessa had promised to pay off the house."

I nodded.

"What else?"

He looked toward the staircase.

"She admitted helping Vanessa collect information about Lily."

My chest tightened.

"School? Birthday? Pictures?"

"All of it."

I sat down.

He joined me.

"Mom claims she didn't understand what Vanessa and Daniel were planning."

"Do you believe her?"

Marcus was silent.

Then he answered.

"I believe she knew enough to stop."

I looked at him.

That was the first time I'd heard him speak about Evelyn without making excuses.

"She wants to apologize to you," he continued.

I stared at my hands.

"I'm not ready."

He nodded.

"Then she waits."

I looked up.

"You're okay with that?"

He took my hand.

"Nia, she hurt our daughter. An apology doesn't erase it."

I leaned against him.

For the first time, I felt that Marcus and I were truly on the same side.

A week later, investigators confirmed that the financial records were authentic.

Vanessa had transferred money to Daniel through a business account.

Her attorney claimed the payments were legitimate consulting fees.

But Daniel's own messages suggested otherwise.

He had written to Vanessa about pressuring me.

About increasing conflict in my marriage.

About making Marcus question his role as Lily's father.

The information strengthened our legal position.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel asked to speak with the authorities again.

This time, he offered additional information.

According to Danielle, he claimed Vanessa had instructed him to demand money from us even though he had already been paid.

He said Vanessa promised him that if our marriage collapsed, he would receive another large payment.

I felt sick.

But the worst revelation came later that afternoon.

Danielle called.

"Nia, Daniel says he has a recording of Vanessa explaining the real reason she wanted Lily separated from Marcus."

I closed my eyes.

"What reason?"

Danielle hesitated.

"She believed that if Marcus lost his relationship with Lily, you would eventually leave him."

I stared out the window.

"And then?"

"She expected him to return to her."

I felt anger rise inside me.

Vanessa hadn't been trying to help a father meet his child.

She had been trying to destroy a family so she could take my place.

But Danielle wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"Daniel claims Vanessa told him Evelyn would support any legal accusation necessary to make you appear unfit."

My hands began shaking.

I looked toward Lily playing in the garden.

And suddenly, I understood.

They hadn't simply wanted to break my marriage.

They had been prepared to hurt my daughter to do it.

I closed my eyes.

Then I made a decision.

May you like

I was finished being afraid.

If Vanessa wanted a fight over my family, she was finally going to learn what protecting a family really meant.
