Chapter 5

I don't remember the drive to Lily's school.
I remember Marcus holding my hand.
I remember the traffic lights.
And I remember repeating one sentence over and over.
"Please let her be okay."
Marcus kept his voice steady.
"She's safe. The principal told us she's safe."
But my mind wouldn't stop racing.
I imagined Daniel standing outside Lily's classroom.
I imagined him calling her name.
I imagined my little girl looking up at a stranger who claimed to be her father.
By the time we reached the school, my hands were shaking so badly that I could barely open the car door.
The principal, Mrs. Henderson, met us inside.
She was a calm woman in her fifties.
But even she looked shaken.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carter, Lily is with her teacher. She hasn't been approached."
I exhaled.
"Thank God."
Marcus asked, "Where's the man?"
"School security asked him to leave. He complied after being told the police had been contacted."
My shoulders sagged.
Mrs. Henderson continued.
"He claimed he had a right to see Lily because he was her biological father."
I closed my eyes.
"Did he show any court order?"
"No."
Marcus nodded.
"Then he had no authority to take her."
Mrs. Henderson looked at us.
"We followed the pickup restrictions you provided. Lily was never in danger of being released to him."
I thanked her.
Then I asked to see my daughter.
Lily came running down the hallway.
"Mommy!"
I knelt and caught her in my arms.
She laughed.
"Why are you here?"
I kissed her forehead.
"Because I wanted to see you."
She smiled.
"Can we go home?"
"Yes, baby."
Marcus lifted her backpack.
"How about pancakes for lunch?"
Lily squealed.
"With strawberries?"
He grinned.
"Extra strawberries."
For the first time all morning, I smiled.
But when we reached the parking lot, my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
"You can't hide her forever."
I immediately forwarded it to Danielle.
She called within minutes.
"Nia, don't answer him."
"I wasn't going to."
"We need to document the school incident."
I nodded.
"Marcus is handling that."
Danielle paused.
"There's something else."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?"
"Daniel has filed a petition regarding parentage and visitation."
I closed my eyes.
"He really did it."
"Yes."
"What happens now?"
"We respond through the court."
I looked at Lily, who was laughing as Marcus helped her into the car.
"Will he get to see her?"
"That depends on the legal findings and what arrangements the court determines are appropriate."
I swallowed.
"Can we tell the judge about the threats?"
"Absolutely."
I ended the call.
Then sat in the passenger seat staring straight ahead.
Marcus noticed.
"What did Danielle say?"
I told him.
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he reached across the console.
"We'll face it together."
I nodded.
But that afternoon, something happened that made everything more complicated.
Vanessa came to our house.
She arrived wearing a cream blouse and expensive sunglasses.
I saw her through the front window.
My stomach turned.
Marcus stepped outside before she could ring the bell.
I watched from behind the curtain.
Vanessa smiled.
Then she reached for his arm.
He pulled away.
I couldn't hear everything they said.
But I saw her expression change.
Finally, Marcus returned inside.
I stood waiting.
"What did she want?"
He sighed.
"She says my mother has been upset."
I stared at him.
"That's why she came?"
"Apparently."
I folded my arms.
"What else?"
Marcus hesitated.
"She said Daniel is willing to negotiate."
I laughed.
"Negotiate?"
He nodded.
"She claims he doesn't actually want to raise Lily."
I felt cold.
"Then what does he want?"
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"Money."
I stared at him.
"How much?"
He swallowed.
"Five hundred thousand dollars."
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I whispered, "He wants us to pay him to stay away from his own daughter?"
Marcus nodded.
Anger rushed through me.
"That is disgusting."
"I know."
"And Vanessa delivered the message?"
"Yes."
I shook my head.
"She's involved in this."
Marcus looked troubled.
"I think so too."
I reached for my phone.
"We need to tell Danielle."
That evening, our attorney explained that we should not negotiate privately or make payments.
She recommended preserving Vanessa's statement and reporting any coercive demand.
For the first time, I began to believe Daniel's sudden interest in Lily had nothing to do with fatherhood.
It was about control.
Or money.
Or both.
The next day, a surprising visitor arrived.
It was Pastor Williams.
He had led our church for nearly twenty years.
He was a gentle man with graying hair and a voice that always made people feel welcome.
I almost refused to see him.
After what happened in church, I wasn't ready to face anyone connected to that congregation.
But Marcus asked me to hear him out.
Pastor Williams sat in our living room.
"Nia, I came to apologize."
I stared at him.
"For what?"
"For allowing that confrontation to continue as long as it did."
My eyes filled.
He lowered his head.
"I should have stepped in immediately."
I swallowed.
"People watched my daughter cry."
"I know."
"Some of them laughed."
His face tightened.
"I'm deeply sorry."
Marcus sat beside me.
The pastor continued.
"I have spoken with the church leadership. Evelyn has been suspended from her volunteer leadership responsibilities while we address her conduct."
I looked up.
"Really?"
He nodded.
"Being a longtime member does not excuse humiliating a child."
For the first time since Sunday, I felt a small sense of relief.
Then Pastor Williams reached into his briefcase.
"There's another reason I came."
He placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"Someone left this at the church office."
I frowned.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
He slid the envelope toward me.
"Your name was written on it."
I opened it carefully.
Inside were several printed pages.
At first, I didn't understand what I was seeing.
Then I recognized the heading.
A financial transfer record.
My eyes moved across the page.
Daniel Reed's name appeared beside a payment amount.
Twenty thousand dollars.
The sender was a business account connected to Vanessa.
Marcus leaned closer.
"What is that?"
I flipped to the next page.
Another payment.
Fifteen thousand dollars.
Then a third.
Ten thousand.
I looked at Pastor Williams.
"Where did these come from?"
He shook his head.
"I wish I knew."
Marcus picked up one page.
His jaw tightened.
"Vanessa has been paying Daniel."
I stared at the records.
Suddenly, everything began making sense.
The church confrontation.
The photographs.
The threats.
The demand for money.
Daniel hadn't simply appeared because he wanted to meet his daughter.
Someone had helped bring him back.
Someone had financed his return.
And that someone was the woman who had spent six years trying to take my husband.
I looked at Marcus.
"Vanessa didn't just help your mother."
My voice trembled.
"She paid Daniel to come after us."
And when Marcus saw the next document inside the envelope, the color drained from his face.
May you like
Because it contained a handwritten note.
"Ask Evelyn what Vanessa promised her if Marcus leaves Nia."
