Surprise

Chapter 8

The threat against my father changed everything.

I had spent weeks thinking only about protecting myself and my daughter.

Now I worried that Margaret's desperation could harm someone else.

Dad listened calmly while I told him what Danielle had said.

He didn't interrupt.

When I finished, he nodded.

"We'll pass it to the investigators."

"Dad, she threatened you."

"I heard."

"You're not taking this seriously."

He reached for my hand.

"Serena, I've dealt with people who become angry when their plans fail."

"This is different."

He looked at my stomach.

"Yes. This time, my daughter is involved."

His voice softened.

"Which is why I'm being especially careful."

Marcus increased security around the estate.

Olivia documented the threat.

And the hotel preserved every relevant communication.

I wanted Margaret held accountable.

But I also wanted my family to stop living in fear.

The following week, the first major breakthrough came.

Investigators confirmed that the signature on the attempted property transfer was not genuine.

The supporting records connected the preparation of the documents to individuals working for the Blackwood family.

More importantly, financial messages showed that Adrian had been aware of the proposed transaction.

He couldn't claim ignorance anymore.

The authorities notified us that formal charges were being pursued in connection with the fraudulent documents.

Bianca and Margaret also faced legal consequences for their conduct, with additional allegations still under review.

I felt relieved.

But not happy.

Nothing could erase what they'd done.

No courtroom could give me back the marriage I thought I had.

One morning, Olivia called.

"Serena, Adrian has requested a settlement discussion."

I stared at the phone.

"What does he want?"

"To resolve the divorce and custody issues without further litigation."

I looked at Dad.

He was standing beside the kitchen window drinking coffee.

"What is he offering?"

Olivia paused.

"He's willing to stop contesting your primary custody request and agree to a structured parenting arrangement subject to appropriate safeguards."

My stomach tightened.

"And the house?"

"He'll cooperate with restoring the property's status and provide information about the attempted transfer."

I closed my eyes.

"Why now?"

"His legal position has changed significantly."

I knew what that meant.

The evidence had finally caught up with him.

I asked Olivia to arrange a meeting between the attorneys.

I didn't want to see Adrian.

Not yet.

But three days later, something happened that made it unavoidable.

He sent a handwritten letter through his lawyer.

I almost refused to open it.

Then I recognized his handwriting.

For a moment, I was back in our tiny apartment during our first year of marriage.

Adrian used to leave little notes on the refrigerator.

"Don't forget lunch."

"You're beautiful."

"Can't wait to see you tonight."

I had saved every one.

Now I unfolded a letter from the same hand.

"Serena,

I have spent every night trying to understand how I became someone who could hurt you like this.

There is no excuse.

I knew my family's business was failing. I knew my mother wanted your inheritance. And I convinced myself that protecting my parents and sister justified hiding things from you.

I told myself I could fix everything before you found out.

Then Mom and Bianca decided to humiliate you at the wedding.

I knew they were planning to provoke you. I told myself it would only be an argument and that nobody would get hurt.

When Mom tore your dress, I should have stopped her.

I didn't.

I was afraid of losing my family's approval.

And because of that, I lost the person who loved me most.

I also participated in discussions about custody that I am deeply ashamed of. I never should have allowed anyone to treat our daughter as leverage.

I know I cannot ask you to forgive me.

But please believe that I am sorry.

Adrian."

I read it twice.

Then I put it down.

I had waited three years for him to acknowledge what his family was doing.

Now he finally had.

And it changed nothing.

I didn't hate him.

That surprised me.

But I no longer trusted him.

And I had learned that trust was something love couldn't survive without.

I placed the letter inside a drawer.

Then I called Olivia.

"Proceed with the divorce."

She paused.

"Are you certain?"

"Completely."

A week later, I attended a court hearing related to the temporary family-law arrangements.

I was thirty-five weeks pregnant.

Dad sat beside me.

Olivia was on my other side.

Across the courtroom, Adrian looked thinner than I remembered.

His expensive suit hung loosely from his shoulders.

When he saw me, he stood.

I looked away.

Margaret wasn't there.

Neither was Bianca.

For once, Adrian had to face the consequences without his mother speaking for him.

The hearing was tense.

His attorney acknowledged the existence of serious allegations and said Adrian would cooperate with the investigation.

Our attorney presented the reasons I needed stability and appropriate safeguards before the baby arrived.

The judge considered the evidence available at that stage and entered temporary orders addressing contact, residence, and future parenting arrangements, while reserving disputed matters for later proceedings.

It wasn't the final outcome.

But it was enough for me to breathe.

Outside the courtroom, Adrian approached.

He stopped several feet away.

"Serena."

I looked at him.

"Hello, Adrian."

His eyes filled with tears.

"How is she?"

I glanced at my stomach.

"Healthy."

He nodded.

"Good."

Silence settled between us.

Then he whispered, "I miss you."

I felt an ache in my chest.

Not because I wanted to return.

Because I remembered the life I thought we'd have.

"I miss who I believed you were," I answered.

He lowered his head.

"I know."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said something I hadn't expected.

"I told the investigators everything."

I stared at him.

"Everything?"

He nodded.

"About the documents. About the wedding. About Mom's plan."

"Why?"

Tears rolled down his face.

"Because you deserve the truth."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Thank you for finally telling it."

Then I turned away.

I thought that was the last major confrontation we'd have before the baby arrived.

But life had other plans.

Two nights later, I woke with a sharp pain across my lower back.

I sat up slowly.

Another contraction followed.

Then another.

I looked at the clock.

3:17 a.m.

My due date was still several weeks away.

I reached for the phone.

"Dad?"

He answered immediately.

"Sweetheart?"

My voice trembled.

"I think the baby's coming."

I heard him moving.

"I'm on my way."

Then I felt a sudden warm rush.

May you like

My water had broken.

And everything changed.
