Surprise

Chapter 1

My mother-in-law tore my maternity dress apart in front of almost two hundred wedding guests.

And my husband stood there watching.

Eight months pregnant, I was standing in the middle of a luxury ballroom, desperately holding the torn fabric against my stomach while my sister-in-law screamed that I was a thief.

"Search her!" Bianca shouted. "She's nothing but a gold digger!"

Every conversation stopped.

Nearly two hundred people turned toward me.

I could hear someone whispering my name.

Someone else laughed.

I had never felt so exposed in my life.

My name is Serena Whitmore. I was thirty-one years old, carrying my first child, and married to a man I once believed would protect me from anything.

That belief died beneath the chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Hotel.

It was supposed to be Bianca's perfect wedding.

Her flowers had been flown in from another state. Her custom gown cost more than most people earned in a year. Her mother, Margaret, had spent six months reminding everyone that the reception was being held at one of the most exclusive hotels in the country.

What they didn't know was that the hotel belonged to my father.

And for three years, I had deliberately kept that information secret.

I wanted Adrian to love me for myself.

Not my family's fortune.

Not my father's influence.

Just me.

Standing there with my dress hanging from one shoulder, I finally understood how badly I had misjudged him.

It began when Bianca suddenly screamed near the champagne fountain.

"My ring! My grandmother's diamond ring is missing!"

The music stopped.

Bianca held up her bare hand.

Then she turned toward me.

"She took it!"

I actually laughed at first.

Not because it was funny.

Because the accusation was so ridiculous that my mind couldn't immediately understand it.

"Bianca, I've been sitting beside the window for the last twenty minutes."

"You were near my dressing room earlier!"

"Because you asked me to bring your flowers."

Her expression changed.

For one brief moment, I saw something calculating behind her tears.

Then she pointed at my stomach.

"She's desperate for money. Babies are expensive, and everyone knows Adrian pays for everything!"

The room fell silent.

I felt my daughter kick.

Instinctively, I rested a hand against my belly.

"That's enough," I said.

Margaret stepped forward in an expensive silver gown.

"Don't you dare speak to my daughter like that."

"Then tell her to stop lying."

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"Watch your mouth, Serena."

I looked toward Adrian.

My husband was standing beside his mother, wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

"Adrian, please."

He avoided my eyes.

Margaret noticed.

And smiled.

"Perhaps we should search her."

I shook my head.

"Absolutely not."

Bianca burst into theatrical sobs.

"See? She's refusing because she's guilty!"

I started walking toward the exit.

I had no intention of participating in their humiliation.

But Margaret moved behind me.

Her heel came down hard on the train of my maternity gown.

I felt the fabric pull.

"Stop!" I cried.

She grabbed the delicate shoulder seam.

"Then prove you have nothing to hide!"

She yanked.

The sound of tearing silk cut through the ballroom.

My dress split from my shoulder toward my waist.

A gasp swept through the crowd.

I stumbled forward, one hand catching the back of a chair while the other protected my stomach.

"Mom!" Adrian exclaimed.

For one beautiful second, I thought he was finally going to help me.

Instead, he looked around nervously.

"You're making a scene."

I stared at him.

"Your mother just ripped my dress."

"Serena, please don't escalate this."

Something inside my chest cracked.

"Don't escalate it?"

I could barely recognize my own voice.

"Your sister accused me of stealing. Your mother physically attacked me. And you're worried about appearances?"

Margaret folded her arms.

"If you're innocent, let Bianca check your purse."

"No."

Adrian approached me.

"Sweetheart, just cooperate."

I stepped backward.

"Don't touch my things."

But he took my purse anyway.

"Trust me. This will clear everything up."

Then he handed it to Bianca.

I will never forget that moment.

Not the torn dress.

Not the staring guests.

Not even Margaret's satisfied smile.

I will remember my husband's hand passing my belongings to the woman who had just destroyed my dignity.

Bianca turned my purse upside down.

Everything scattered across the polished marble.

My wallet.

House keys.

Lipstick.

Prenatal vitamins.

A photograph from our first ultrasound.

And a small matte-black electronic access card.

The card slid beneath Bianca's wedding shoe.

She kicked the ultrasound picture aside.

"Where's the ring?"

I bent carefully to retrieve it.

My back ached.

My eyes burned.

But I refused to cry.

"You're not going to find something I didn't take."

Bianca looked furious.

"Call the police!"

Margaret laughed.

"Excellent idea. Let's see how the little princess handles a criminal investigation."

Adrian stood motionless.

I gathered my ultrasound picture and straightened.

For three years, I had swallowed their insults.

I had accepted holidays when they pretended I wasn't family.

I had endured Margaret criticizing my clothes, my cooking, my education, and even the way I spoke.

I had listened while Bianca called me a parasite.

I had forgiven Adrian every time he said they simply needed more time to accept me.

But now my daughter was involved.

And I was finished.

I reached for my phone.

Margaret laughed again.

"What now? Calling someone to rescue you?"

I looked at Adrian.

"Last chance."

He frowned.

"What?"

"Are you going to stand beside me?"

His eyes moved toward his mother.

Then Bianca.

Finally, he sighed.

"Serena, you're being dramatic."

Those four words ended our marriage.

Not legally.

Not yet.

But in every way that mattered.

I pressed a familiar number.

My father answered before the second ring.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Hearing his voice nearly broke me.

"Dad."

His tone changed immediately.

"Serena? What's wrong?"

I swallowed.

"I'm done protecting them."

There was a silence.

Then he asked one question.

"Are you and the baby safe?"

I looked down at my ruined dress.

"For now."

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"Stay where you are."

A mechanical click sounded near the ballroom entrance.

Then another.

And another.

The electronic doors controlling the ballroom's private entrances switched to security mode.

The public emergency exits remained functional, but the private corridors were secured.

The music stopped completely.

Across the room, several discreet security officers stepped forward.

Bianca looked confused.

"What is happening?"

The black access card beneath her heel began flashing red.

Margaret stepped away from it.

My father spoke through my phone.

"Security has preserved everything. The police and our attorneys are entering through the service corridor."

Adrian stared at me.

"Serena, who exactly is your father?"

I slowly looked toward the enormous silver crest above the ballroom doors.

The same crest Margaret had spent months boasting about.

The same hotel she insisted was reserved for important families.

"The man who owns this hotel."

Adrian's face lost its color.

Bianca stared at the card beneath her shoe.

Margaret opened her mouth but said nothing.

Then my father spoke again.

"And Serena?"

"Yes, Dad?"

"We found the missing ring."

My heart stopped.

"Where?"

His next words turned every head toward my husband.

May you like

"It was planted inside Adrian's coat pocket seventeen minutes ago."

And for the first time since our wedding three years earlier, I saw genuine fear in my husband's eyes.
