Chapter 8

The trial started eight months later.
By then, Emma no longer asked if she had to finish every bite to stay inside.
Lily no longer hid bread under her pillow every night.
Only sometimes.
Progress can be small and still holy.
Daniel pleaded guilty to financial concealment, neglect, and failure to protect.
He claimed he never knew Olivia hurt the girls.
Rebecca destroyed that with one video.
Ashley’s dinner recording had captured more than Olivia’s cruelty.
Before I walked in, Daniel’s voice was clear in the background.
“Leave Emma out there until she stops whining. Mom’s right. She needs to learn.”
I watched him hear himself.
His face crumpled.
Mine did not.
Olivia’s trial was worse.
Her attorney called her a devoted grandmother overwhelmed by difficult children and ungrateful adults.
Then prosecutors played the balcony photos.
The cabin rescue footage.
The preschool records.
Madison’s letter.
The payments to the doctor.
Grace testified with shaking hands.
“My sister was not perfect,” she said. “But she loved Lily. Olivia took that love and used poverty to bury it.”
Tyler admitted Olivia paid him to pretend Lily was his daughter so Daniel’s name stayed clean.
Ashley admitted she recorded family dinners for social media and caught years of comments about “teaching Emma her place.”
Then I testified.
Olivia stared at me the whole time.
The prosecutor asked, “What did you see when you came home?”
“My family eating food paid for with my card while my child sat cold outside with stale bread.”
“Did you attack anyone?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten them?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“I took my daughter somewhere warm. Then I stopped funding the people hurting her.”
Olivia’s attorney stood.
“You enjoyed humiliating them, didn’t you?”
I looked at him.
“No. I enjoyed hearing my daughter sleep without crying.”
The courtroom went quiet.
Then the prosecutor asked about the first legal notice.
I read the line aloud.
Financial exploitation, child neglect, and misuse of personal funds.
Simple words.
But they had opened the door.
Olivia was convicted of child endangerment, fraud, custodial interference, witness intimidation, and conspiracy related to Madison’s death.
Her doctor was convicted too.
Tyler received a reduced sentence.
Ashley received probation and restitution.
Daniel lost unsupervised custody.
My divorce was finalized two weeks later.
He stood outside the courtroom and whispered, “Sarah, I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“Be sorry in therapy. Be sorry in child support. Be sorry by not asking Emma to comfort you.”
May you like
He nodded.
For once, he did not argue.
