Surprise

Chapter 3

By noon, Rebecca had an emergency hearing scheduled.

By one, Daniel was at the hotel front desk demanding my room number.

The manager called me.

“Mrs. Miller, there’s a man here claiming to be your husband.”

“Do not give him anything.”

“He says your child is in danger.”

I looked at Emma coloring quietly on the bed.

“Call security.”

Daniel started shouting loud enough that I heard him through the phone.

“She’s unstable. She took my daughter.”

Rebecca arrived at the hotel ten minutes later with two police officers and a court filing in her hand.

Daniel’s performance changed when he saw her.

He lowered his voice.

“Rebecca, this is a misunderstanding.”

She handed him papers.

“No, Daniel. This is notice.”

His face tightened.

He flipped through the pages.

Divorce petition.

Emergency custody motion.

Financial freeze.

Request for accounting.

Child welfare report.

He looked up at me.

“You called CPS on my mother?”

“I reported what happened.”

“She’s an old woman.”

“She starved a toddler outside while eating lobster.”

His eyes flashed.

“She’s my mother.”

“And Emma is your daughter.”

He said nothing.

That silence did what words could not.

Even the younger police officer looked at him differently.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re starting.”

Rebecca moved between us.

“Threaten my client again in front of officers.”

His jaw clenched.

Then Emma appeared behind me.

“Daddy?”

His face softened instantly.

Too fast.

Too practiced.

“Sweetheart, come here.”

Emma hid behind my leg.

Daniel froze.

I felt the whole hallway notice.

His voice changed.

“Emma, don’t be rude.”

She started crying.

I picked her up.

Rebecca looked at him.

“You may leave now.”

Daniel turned and walked out without another word.

But ten minutes later, I received a photo.

Emma sleeping in her bedroom.

Taken from inside my apartment.

The message said:

You think a hotel keeps her safe?

My blood went cold.

Rebecca took my phone.

“Police. Now.”

They searched the apartment that afternoon.

They found a hidden camera inside Emma’s stuffed bear.

Not mine.

Not installed by me.

It had been streaming to an account registered under Ashley’s boyfriend.

His name was Tyler Reed.

Ashley claimed she knew nothing.

Tyler claimed Daniel asked him to “help monitor the apartment” because I traveled so much.

Rebecca’s face was stone when police called.

“Sarah, this just became criminal.”

I stood in the hotel room, holding Emma so tightly she squirmed.

Then Rebecca sent another file.

Little Oaks Preschool enrollment.

Lily Carter.

Emergency contact: Olivia Whitmore.

Financial sponsor: Sarah Miller.

Authorized pickup: Daniel Miller.

The attached photo showed a four-year-old girl with dark curls.

She was not Emma.

But she was wearing Emma’s pink winter coat.
