Surprise

Chapter 7

The words "Phase One" haunted me for days.

I heard them when I woke up.

I heard them when the nurses checked my blood pressure.

I heard them whenever I closed my eyes.

Phase one.

Two simple words.

But they made me feel as though my entire life had been reduced to a business project.

Something Marcus and Vanessa could manage.

Something they could control.

Something they could erase.

The investigators didn't tell me everything immediately.

They needed to verify the documents.

They needed to examine the bottle.

They needed to review financial records.

I understood.

But waiting was torture.

One morning, Angela arrived with a serious expression.

"Naomi, we have some developments."

I sat upright.

"What happened?"

She pulled a chair beside my bed.

"The investigators have identified several suspicious financial transactions."

I nodded.

"And?"

"They also found communications between Marcus and Vanessa discussing your assets."

My hands tightened.

"What did they say?"

Angela looked at me carefully.

"Some messages referred to obtaining financial control while you were incapacitated."

I felt sick.

"While I was unconscious?"

"Yes."

I stared at the window.

Marcus had planned for my helplessness.

He had treated my collapse as an opportunity.

Angela continued.

"The handwritten schedule appears to describe a sequence of actions."

I swallowed.

"Phase one?"

She nodded.

"That entry is associated with the date of your collapse."

My heart pounded.

"And phase two?"

Angela hesitated.

"The next entry refers to medical authorization and relocation."

I closed my eyes.

The hospital papers.

The private rehabilitation facility.

Marcus had been trying to move me.

It wasn't a spontaneous decision.

It was part of a plan.

"What about phase three?" I whispered.

Angela looked troubled.

"Property transfer."

My chest tightened.

"And phase four?"

She paused.

"Insurance review."

I stared at her.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I whispered.

"They expected me to die."

Angela took a careful breath.

"The documents raise serious concerns. Investigators are examining whether there was an intent to cause harm."

I looked away.

I wanted a simple answer.

Yes.

No.

Something definite.

But the truth was unfolding through evidence, not guesses.

Angela continued.

"Naomi, the important thing is that the authorities are taking this seriously."

I nodded weakly.

She then told me that Marcus and Vanessa had been interviewed.

Both denied wrongdoing.

Marcus claimed the financial changes were meant to protect our family's assets.

Vanessa insisted she had only been helping him.

Neither admitted placing anything in my drink.

I wasn't surprised.

Marcus had always been good at explanations.

He could make a terrible decision sound practical.

He could turn an accusation into a misunderstanding.

He could make me doubt things I had seen with my own eyes.

But this time, there were records.

There were messages.

There were medical findings.

And there was Grace.

My brave little girl who had told the truth even while she was afraid.

I looked at Angela.

"Can I go home soon?"

She nodded.

"Your doctors will decide when you're medically ready."

I swallowed.

"But I don't want to return to the house while Marcus can enter."

Angela nodded.

"We're working on protective measures."

I looked down.

"I just want my daughter."

Her expression softened.

"I know."

A week later, I was discharged.

Renee brought clean clothes.

Grace arrived holding a small bouquet of flowers.

The moment she saw me standing beside the hospital bed, her face lit up.

"Mommy!"

She ran into my arms.

I hugged her carefully.

"I'm going home, baby."

She began crying.

"Really?"

"Really."

I kissed her forehead.

"But we're staying with Aunt Renee for a little while."

She nodded.

"Okay."

Then she looked up.

"Will Dad be there?"

My chest tightened.

"No, sweetheart."

She was quiet.

I crouched beside her.

"How do you feel about that?"

Grace looked at the floor.

"I don't know."

I nodded.

"That's okay."

She started crying.

"I still love him."

My heart broke.

I held her face gently.

"Of course you do."

She swallowed.

"Am I allowed to?"

I pulled her into my arms.

"Yes, baby."

My voice cracked.

"You are always allowed to have your own feelings."

She hugged me tightly.

I didn't tell her what to think about her father.

I didn't need to.

The truth would become clear through the investigation.

And I wanted Grace to know that loving someone didn't mean excusing everything they did.

At Renee's house, I slept in the guest bedroom.

Grace slept nearby.

For the first time in weeks, I wasn't attached to a medical monitor.

But I still woke up frightened.

Sometimes I dreamed of Marcus standing over my bed.

Sometimes I imagined Vanessa reaching for my bracelets.

Sometimes I heard those words again.

She'll never know.

One night, I woke up crying.

Renee heard me.

She came into the room and sat beside me.

"Another nightmare?"

I nodded.

She took my hand.

"You're safe here."

I wanted to believe her.

But my body hadn't caught up with what my mind knew.

I was away from Marcus.

The hospital had documented my concerns.

My accounts were protected.

The investigators were working.

Still, I felt afraid.

Renee squeezed my hand.

"You don't have to recover overnight."

I looked at her.

She smiled sadly.

"Just keep going."

I nodded.

The following morning, Angela called.

Her voice sounded serious.

"Naomi, the investigators have completed additional testing."

My heart raced.

"The bottle?"

"Yes."

I sat down.

"What did they find?"

She explained that the bottle contained traces of the same class of sedating medication detected in my medical tests.

My hands began shaking.

It wasn't definitive proof of who administered it.

But it connected two important pieces of evidence.

I closed my eyes.

Grace had seen Vanessa handle that bottle.

My medical tests showed exposure.

And now the bottle itself had tested positive.

Angela continued.

"There is also surveillance footage."

I froze.

"What footage?"

"From the kitchen security camera."

My heart stopped.

I had forgotten about that camera.

Marcus installed it years earlier after a burglary scare.

He told me it recorded only when motion was detected.

I assumed the footage was automatically deleted.

Apparently, some of it had been preserved.

Angela took a breath.

"The recording appears to show Vanessa handling the glass before your collapse."

I covered my mouth.

"And Marcus?"

She paused.

"He enters the kitchen shortly afterward."

I began crying.

Angela continued.

"The investigators are reviewing the complete sequence."

I looked toward Grace's bedroom.

My daughter had told the truth.

And now there was evidence.

But Angela wasn't finished.

"Naomi, there's one more thing."

I swallowed.

"What?"

"The authorities have requested arrest warrants."

My heart pounded.

"For who?"

Angela answered quietly.

"Marcus and Vanessa."

I stared at the wall.

For fourteen years, I had called Marcus my husband.

For twelve years, Grace had called him Daddy.

May you like

Now he was facing arrest.

And I knew our lives would never be the same again.
