Chapter 1

The first thing I heard was my husband saying, "She'll never know."
I was lying in a private hospital bed, unable to move, while the man I had loved for fourteen years stood beside me signing a document he clearly didn't want me to see.
My eyes were closed.
My breathing was shallow.
And according to everyone in that room, I was unconscious.
But I heard everything.
The scratch of his pen.
The clicking of Vanessa's heels.
The soft beeping of the heart monitor beside my bed.
And the unmistakable satisfaction in my husband's voice.
"Once this is signed, we can finally move forward."
Vanessa laughed quietly.
"About time."
I wanted to open my eyes.
I wanted to scream.
But something inside me warned me to stay still.
Three days earlier, I had collapsed in my kitchen.
I remembered reaching for a glass of water.
Then the floor seemed to tilt.
My legs gave way.
The last thing I remembered was Marcus leaning over me.
He didn't look frightened.
He looked strangely calm.
Now I was in a hospital.
And he was standing beside another woman.
Not just any woman.
Vanessa Carter.
My husband's so-called business consultant.
The same woman who had been calling him late at night.
The same woman whose perfume I had smelled on his jacket.
The same woman Marcus insisted was only helping him expand his company.
I had confronted him about her two weeks earlier.
He laughed.
"Naomi, you're imagining things."
I wanted to believe him.
We had built an entire life together.
A beautiful home.
A successful business.
A daughter named Grace, who had just turned twelve.
Fourteen years of marriage.
Or at least, fourteen years of what I thought was marriage.
Now Vanessa stood close enough to my hospital bed that I could smell her expensive perfume.
"Are you sure she can't hear us?" she whispered.
Marcus sighed.
"The doctor said she's heavily sedated."
My stomach tightened.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Still, I'd feel better if we didn't discuss everything in front of her."
Marcus made a dismissive sound.
"Naomi doesn't even know where she is."
I wanted to prove him wrong.
But I forced myself to remain motionless.
The hospital room was bright.
Sunlight filtered through the blinds.
Somewhere beyond the door, nurses were talking.
I could hear a cart rolling down the hallway.
Everything sounded normal.
Except the two people standing over me were talking as though I had already disappeared.
Marcus placed another sheet on the bedside table.
"One more signature."
Vanessa exhaled.
"Finally."
I heard the pen moving again.
Then Marcus said the words that turned my blood cold.
"Once the paperwork is processed, everything changes."
Vanessa laughed.
"And Naomi won't be able to stop us."
Everything?
What everything?
Our house?
Our company?
Our savings?
I tried to move my fingers.
A tiny twitch ran through my right hand.
Neither of them noticed.
Vanessa stepped closer to the bed.
"Oh, Naomi," she whispered.
Her voice was full of false sympathy.
"You really should have paid more attention to your husband."
I felt the mattress shift.
She was leaning over me.
Then something cool slid against my wrist.
My bracelets.
Two beautiful gold bracelets my mother had given me before she died.
They were the last jewelry I had received from her.
I wore them almost every day.
Vanessa slowly unclasped the first one.
Then the second.
"These won't matter anymore," she murmured.
I wanted to grab her hand.
I wanted to tell her to put them back.
Instead, I remained still.
Marcus didn't object.
He didn't even ask what she was doing.
He simply said, "Put them away before someone comes in."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Relax. They practically belong to us now."
My chest tightened.
Us.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not an innocent friendship.
They were planning something together.
And somehow, I was standing in their way.
Marcus gathered the signed papers.
"I'll take these downstairs."
Vanessa stopped him.
"Wait."
"What?"
"What about Grace?"
My heart nearly stopped.
My daughter.
My beautiful little girl.
She had been staying with my sister, Renee, since I was hospitalized.
At least, that was what Marcus told me before I lost consciousness.
I prayed she was safe.
Marcus lowered his voice.
"We'll handle Grace after this."
Vanessa sounded irritated.
"She asks too many questions."
"She's twelve."
"She's Naomi's daughter."
Silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
"And she's mine."
For one brief moment, hope flickered inside me.
Maybe he would protect her.
Maybe there was still some line he wouldn't cross.
But then he continued.
"Which means she'll do what I tell her."
My hope disappeared.
Vanessa laughed.
"Good."
They turned toward the door.
I heard Marcus straighten his jacket.
Vanessa slipped my bracelets into her handbag.
And something inside me finally snapped.
I couldn't stay helpless.
Not when Grace might be in danger.
Not when my mother's jewelry was being stolen.
Not when my husband was signing mysterious documents beside my unconscious body.
I forced my eyes open.
Just a little.
The ceiling came into focus.
Then the medical monitor.
Then the red nurse-call button beside my hand.
It was only a few inches away.
But my arm felt impossibly heavy.
I moved one finger.
Then another.
Pain shot through my shoulder.
I kept going.
My fingertips touched the edge of the button.
Marcus was still speaking to Vanessa.
Neither noticed.
I pressed.
A tiny light appeared.
I closed my eyes again.
Seconds later, the hospital door opened.
"Mr. Bennett?"
A nurse stepped inside.
Her name badge read ALISHA.
She wore blue scrubs.
Her expression was professional but alert.
"Is everything okay in here?"
Marcus immediately changed his voice.
"Of course. My wife's resting."
Vanessa stepped away from the bed.
I heard her handbag snap shut.
Nurse Alisha approached.
Her shoes stopped near my pillow.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
I felt her hand touch mine.
"Naomi? Can you hear me?"
This was my chance.
I forced my fingers around hers.
Her hand went still.
I opened my eyes.
Just enough to see her face.
Then I whispered four words.
"I heard every word."
Alisha's expression changed instantly.
Marcus stopped breathing.
At least, that was how it sounded.
Vanessa moved backward.
"She's awake?"
I tightened my grip on the nurse's hand.
"Don't let them leave."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Naomi, sweetheart—"
I flinched.
Alisha immediately moved between us.
"Mr. Bennett, please step back."
Vanessa hid her handbag behind her body.
Marcus looked toward the papers in his hand.
Then toward the door.
Alisha followed his gaze.
She noticed the document.
She noticed my bare wrists.
Then she looked directly at me.
"Mrs. Bennett, do you feel safe with these visitors?"
My throat burned.
But I managed to answer.
"No."
The nurse straightened.
She pressed the assistance button on the wall.
Then she looked at Marcus.
"Sir, I need you to remain where you are."
Marcus's face turned pale.
"There's been a misunderstanding."
Alisha glanced at the signed paperwork.
Her expression hardened.
"Then we need security."
Vanessa backed toward the door.
Marcus gripped the documents.
And I realized something terrifying.
Whatever he had signed was important enough that he was prepared to risk everything to keep it hidden.
But he had made one fatal mistake.
May you like
He thought I would never wake up.
And now I was watching him panic.
