Surprise

Chapter 9: The Last Person I Ever Suspected

I didn’t answer Daniel’s message.

Not immediately.

For the first time in my life, I allowed myself to sit with uncertainty.

No decisions.

No reactions.

No trusting the first person who offered an explanation.

Because that was how I got here.

I trusted.

I trusted Daniel when he said he loved me.

I trusted Patricia when she called me family.

I trusted Olivia when she promised she believed in me.

I trusted Marcus when he said he was protecting me.

And every single person had taken pieces of the truth and hidden them away.

I looked at the flash drive sitting on the table.

The final research files.

The thing everyone wanted.

The thing my mother had died protecting.

The thing that apparently determined the future of Sterling Nova.

I should have felt powerful.

Instead, I felt tired.

So tired.

Olivia watched me carefully.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

It was the first honest answer I had given all night.

She nodded slowly.

“That might be the smartest thing you’ve said.””

I almost smiled.

Almost.

“Why?””

“Because everyone else has been trying to make you choose sides.””

She looked toward the door where Robert had disappeared.

“Your father.””

“Marcus.””

“Daniel.””

“Me.””

She looked down.

“They all want you to believe their version.””

I picked up the flash drive.

“And you?””

Olivia swallowed.

“I want you to know mine.””

I studied her.

“Why should I believe you?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“You shouldn’t.””

That surprised me.

“What?””

“You shouldn’t believe me.””

She looked at me.

“Not because I’m lying.””

A pause.

“Because I already proved I could.””

That honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

I looked away.

“I don’t know how to forgive you.””

“I know.””

“I don’t even know if I can.””

“I know.””

Her eyes filled.

“But Claire…”

She took a breath.

“I never stopped being your friend.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I wanted to believe that.

And I was afraid of wanting it.

My phone buzzed again.

Daniel.

Another message.

*I can prove everything. Please. Just give me ten minutes.*

Olivia saw his name.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel is dangerous.””

I frowned.

“You think he’s the one behind everything?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then what?””

Olivia looked at the flash drive.

“I think Daniel is just one part of it.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How many people are involved?””

She whispered:

“More than you know.””

I returned to the hotel forty minutes later.

Not because I trusted Daniel.

Because I needed to see his face when I asked the questions.

Sometimes people could control their words.

Not their reactions.

The ballroom was almost empty.

The decorations remained.

The flowers.

The candles.

The untouched wedding cake.

A beautiful room abandoned after a disaster.

Daniel stood near the window.

He looked like he hadn’t moved since I left.

When he saw me, relief crossed his face.

“Claire.””

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

That small movement told me something.

The old Daniel would have walked toward me.

Touched my hand.

Tried to comfort me.

This Daniel waited for permission.

Good.

At least he understood something had changed.

“You said you know who controlled everything.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Before I tell you, I need you to understand something.””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

His eyebrows tightened.

“No?””

“No explanations first.””

I stepped closer.

“No speeches.””

“No excuses.””

“Just answers.””

He looked down.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

For a moment, he looked like the man I remembered.

Not the liar.

Not the manipulator.

Just Daniel.

“I didn’t meet you by accident.””

I expected that.

It still hurt.

“How long did you know who I was?””

He was silent.

“Daniel.””

“Since before the conference.””

My heart tightened.

“How long before?””

“Six months.””

I closed my eyes.

Six months.

Six months of conversations.

Six months of dates.

Six months of him learning about me.

While I thought we were falling in love.

“Who sent you?””

He looked away.

“My father.””

I waited.

“Edward Whitmore.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because he believed your mother left something behind.””

“The technology.””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“And you were supposed to find it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You admit it?””

“I have to.””

“Why now?””

He looked broken.

“Because I lost you.””

The words almost made me angry.

Almost.

“Did you love me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because at first, I didn’t know how to stop.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It’s not.””

He took a breath.

“My father told me it was simple.””

“Simple?””

“He said I just had to get close to you.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He said you were the key.””

“To what?””

“To the hidden research.””

I stared.

“And when you found out I owned the company?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I already knew.””

That hurt.

More than anything else.

“You knew I owned Sterling Nova?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let everyone believe you built it?””

His face changed.

“I was scared.””

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You were proud.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was ashamed.””

That stopped me.

He continued.

“I spent my whole life trying to prove I was more than my father’s son.””

I said nothing.

“My father was brilliant. Powerful. Everyone respected him.””

His hands tightened.

“But he was cruel.””

I watched him carefully.

“I thought if I became successful enough, I would finally be different.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“Then I met you.””

He looked at me.

“And you had already built everything I was trying to become.””

Silence.

“I should have told you the truth.””

“Yes.””

“I should have walked away.””

“Yes.””

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Because somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing you as a mission.””

I hated that my heart reacted.

I hated that part of me remembered every good moment.

Every laugh.

Every night talking until sunrise.

Every promise.

“I loved you.””

His voice broke.

“But I was too weak to choose you.””

The words hung between us.

Then I asked the question that mattered.

“Who controls everything?””

Daniel’s face changed.

The sadness disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

“Claire.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

I frowned.

“My mother’s friend?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

And said a name I had never expected.

“Patricia Whitmore.””

I froze.

“My mother-in-law?””

He nodded.

“No.””

I stared.

“Your father said Edward wanted control.””

“He did.””

“Olivia said Robert wanted control.””

“He did.””

“Marcus said he was protecting the company.””

Daniel looked at me.

“They were all pieces.””

My stomach tightened.

“And Patricia?””

“She was the person moving them.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, think.””

I did.

And suddenly small things started connecting.

Patricia always knew what to say.

Always knew where the pressure points were.

Always knew how to make Daniel feel guilty.

The wedding demand.

The condos.

The company expenses.

But why?

“She knew my mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“They were friends.””

“How?””

“Before your mother died, she trusted Patricia.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

“She was the person your mother asked to look after you.””

I felt sick.

The woman who tried to take everything from me.

The woman who stood in my wedding dress and demanded my properties.

Was the person my mother once trusted.

“No.””

Daniel nodded sadly.

“She changed.””

“Why?””

“Money.””

The answer again.

Always money.

“She realized your mother’s work was worth billions.””

I stared.

“And she waited.””

“Yes.””

“For me to build the company.””

“Yes.””

“For me to become valuable.””

“Yes.””

My entire body felt cold.

Patricia wasn’t trying to become my family.

She was trying to claim what she believed belonged to her.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why did she want my condos?””

His expression changed.

“Because she wanted to test you.””

“Test me?””

“She wanted to know if you would give up something valuable without a fight.””

I felt anger rise.

“And if I signed?””

“She would know you were easy to control.””

The ballroom doors opened.

Both of us turned.

A figure stood there.

A familiar silver gown.

Patricia.

She looked different now.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Calm.

That was worse.

“I was wondering when you would finally learn the truth.””

My heart dropped.

Daniel stepped back.

“Mom.””

Patricia smiled.

“Oh, Daniel.””

Her voice was cold.

“You were always the weakest part of the plan.””

I stared at her.

“The plan?””

She walked slowly into the room.

“You really thought this was about condos?””

Her smile widened.

“Claire, you have no idea how long I have waited for this moment.””

I felt my phone vibrate.

A message.

From Marcus.

Only four words.

*Get away from her. Now.*

I looked at Patricia.

Then Daniel.

Then the empty ballroom.

And I finally understood.

The wedding wasn’t ruined because Patricia demanded my property.

The wedding was ruined because she knew exactly what would happen after I refused.

She wanted everyone exposed.

She wanted everyone divided.

She wanted me alone.

Patricia reached into her purse.

Not for documents this time.

For something else.

A small device.

She placed it on the table.

“This contains the truth about your mother’s death.””

My breath stopped.

“Where did you get that?””

She smiled.

“From the person who helped me hide it.””

The ballroom doors behind her opened again.

Someone stepped inside.

Someone I had not expected.

Someone who made Patricia smile.

Because unlike Daniel…

Unlike Olivia…

Unlike Marcus…

This person had never once been suspected.

Patricia turned.

“Thank you for coming.””

I looked at the person standing behind her.

And my entire world went silent.

May you like

Because the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning…

Was the one person I thought had nothing left to hide.
