Surprise

Chapter 7: The Introduction That Was Never an Accident

I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.

Ask Olivia why she was the one who introduced Daniel to you.

The rain outside became louder.

Or maybe everything else had become quieter.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Olivia was watching me.

She didn’t ask what the message said.

She didn’t need to.

The look on my face told her.

“You know.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Her shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

My chest tightened.

“You knew I would find out.””

Olivia looked down.

“Yes.””

“Then why meet me?””

“Because you deserved the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“The truth?””

I placed my phone on the table.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

My voice shook.

“My father.””

“Marcus.””

“Daniel.””

“And now you.””

I leaned closer.

“Everyone says they are protecting me while they are lying to me.””

Olivia looked like she wanted to cry.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your entire life has missing pages.””

She stayed silent.

Good.

Because I wasn’t finished.

“You were there.””

Her eyes lifted.

“You were there when Daniel and I met.””

“Yes.””

“You introduced us.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The café seemed frozen.

The answer had been waiting between us since the beginning.

Finally, Olivia whispered:

“Because I was asked to.””

My stomach tightened.

“By who?””

She looked toward the window.

At the rain.

At the empty street.

Then back at me.

“Edward Whitmore.””

For a second, I didn’t react.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

The name felt too heavy.

Too connected to everything.

Daniel.

His father.

My mother.

Sterling Nova.

My entire life.

“You’re saying Daniel’s father told you to introduce him to me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“Because he knew about your mother’s work.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“How?””

“Because he was there when it started.””

I looked at her.

“Explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“Years ago, before Sterling Nova existed, your mother worked with several researchers to develop the original technology.””

“My mother was a scientist?””

“She was many things.””

Olivia gave a sad smile.

“She was brilliant.””

I looked down at the letter in front of me.

A letter from a woman I thought I knew.

A woman I loved.

A woman who apparently carried an entire world of secrets.

“What happened?””

“Your mother discovered someone was trying to steal her research.””

“Edward?””

Olivia nodded.

“Edward wanted control.””

“Why?””

“Because he understood the value before anyone else did.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain Daniel.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It explains why Daniel was sent.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Sent.

Not introduced.

Not brought into my life.

Sent.

I looked away.

“Was anything real?””

Olivia didn’t answer.

That hurt more than if she had lied.

“Olivia.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Claire…”

“Was anything real?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it was worse than a lie.

She continued.

“I know Daniel was supposed to get close to you.””

My hands tightened.

“But somewhere along the way…”

She stopped.

“Somewhere along the way what?””

She looked at me.

“I think he started loving you.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“Do you believe that?””

Olivia looked miserable.

“I don’t know anymore.””

Neither did I.

And that was the worst part.

Because betrayal would have been easier if Daniel had been a monster.

If every memory had been fake.

But people were complicated.

Someone could hurt you and still have cared.

Someone could love you and still destroy you.

That was the cruelest kind of truth.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Olivia looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Edward?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

She hesitated.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then who?””

Her voice dropped.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“That makes no sense.””

Olivia looked at the letter.

“She made me promise.””

My heartbeat changed.

“What?””

“After she died, I found the files. I found everything.””

She touched the envelope.

“She knew someone would come looking for the technology.””

“Why would she trust you?””

Olivia gave a small, painful smile.

“Because she knew my father.””

I stared.

“Your father?””

“Yes.””

Another connection.

Another hidden thread.

I felt exhausted.

“How many secrets are there?””

Olivia looked at me.

“More than you want.””

“Try me.””

She took a breath.

“My father worked with your mother.””

“On Sterling Nova?””

“Before Sterling Nova.””

“What was his name?””

She looked away.

“Robert Vale.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

The name I had just learned.

The name on my mother’s original agreement.

“The man my father said tried to take the company?””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

My mind struggled to connect everything.

“Your father was Robert Vale.””

“Yes.””

“And you became my CFO.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew about my mother’s work.””

“Yes.””

“And you still became my best friend.””

Tears appeared in Olivia’s eyes.

“I didn’t become your friend because of the company.””

I looked at her.

“I became your friend because you were the only person who treated me like a person.””

The words caught me off guard.

She continued.

“Do you remember when we first met?””

I did.

A small office.

A broken printer.

Two exhausted women trying to build something impossible.

“You brought me coffee,” Olivia said.

“You were working for eighteen hours straight.””

I remembered.

“You said I looked like I was about to collapse.””

A faint smile appeared on her face.

“And you said, ‘I can collapse after we succeed.’”

I looked away.

Because I remembered everything.

The good moments were still real.

That was the problem.

“I cared about you.””

Her voice cracked.

“I still do.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because Edward had something against me.””

“What?””

“He knew my father’s involvement.””

I frowned.

“So?””

“He knew my father had left behind information.””

“Information about Sterling Nova?””

“Yes.””

“And he threatened you?””

Olivia nodded.

“He said if I didn’t help him, he would destroy everything my father built.””

I stared.

“Your father’s reputation?””

“My father’s life.””

The words changed the atmosphere.

“What do you mean?””

Olivia looked at me.

“He wasn’t dead.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“Robert Vale is alive.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“That’s what everyone was supposed to believe.””

I stood slowly.

My chair moved backward.

“Where is he?””

Olivia looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“But you know he’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Because I saw him.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

Olivia looked at the door.

Like she was afraid someone might hear.

“Inside Sterling Nova.””

I felt sick.

“Inside my company?””

“Yes.””

“Who let him in?””

Olivia didn’t answer.

I already knew.

Someone with access.

Someone who could move through the company unnoticed.

Someone who knew all the systems.

I whispered:

“Daniel?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Marcus?””

“No.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

Olivia’s face changed.

And suddenly I knew.

The answer had been hidden in front of me.

The person who handled the finances.

The person who knew every transaction.

The person who could approve payments.

The person who had been moving pieces around without anyone noticing.

“My assistant?””

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother left one person in charge of protecting Sterling Nova.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Olivia whispered:

“Someone you have never met.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

“Who?””

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out an old photograph.

She placed it on the table.

My fingers moved toward it.

Slowly.

The photo showed my mother.

My father.

A younger Robert Vale.

And one more person.

A man standing slightly behind them.

Someone I had never seen before.

But someone whose face looked strangely familiar.

I picked up the photograph.

“Who is this?””

Olivia looked at me.

“That is the person who has been protecting you for years.””

I stared at the stranger.

“Then why have I never met him?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“Because you have.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Olivia pointed at the photograph.

Then at me.

“He changed his name.””

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the man again.

At the familiar eyes.

The familiar expression.

The person I had trusted.

The person who had always been nearby.

Olivia said the name.

And the world shifted.

“Claire…”

She paused.

“Your mother’s protector has been working beside you since the day you founded Sterling Nova.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the man in the photograph was not a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been helping me uncover the truth.

Someone who had just handed me documents proving everyone else was guilty.

Marcus Hale.

My phone buzzed.

A final message appeared.

Not from Olivia.

Not from the unknown number.

May you like

From Marcus.

*Claire, don’t believe anything Olivia tells you. She is the reason your mother died.*
