Surprise

Chapter 7

I had spent most of my life believing that the worst betrayals came from strangers.

I was wrong.

The deepest wounds came from people who knew exactly where to hurt you.

Detective Brooks told us that Ruth was being treated at Brookfield General Hospital.

Marcus and I drove there immediately.

When we reached her room, I stopped in the doorway.

Ruth lay beneath a white blanket.

She looked exhausted.

Her face was thinner than I remembered.

There was an intravenous line in her arm.

But when she saw me, she smiled.

“Evelyn.”

I rushed to her bedside.

“Oh, Ruth.”

I hugged her carefully.

She began crying.

“I thought I might never see you again.”

I shook my head.

“Don't say that.”

She held my hand tightly.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

“For causing all this trouble.”

I pulled back.

“Ruth Jackson, you listen to me.”

Her eyes widened.

“You have never been trouble.”

She began crying harder.

I wiped her cheeks.

“You have spent twenty-six years taking care of this family. Now it's our turn.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Ruth.”

She looked at him.

He lowered his head.

“I'm sorry.”

She frowned.

“Marcus, sweetheart—”

“I should have defended you last year.”

He swallowed.

“When Nia told you to leave, I should have made things right.”

Ruth reached for his hand.

“You didn't know what happened.”

“I should have asked.”

She smiled sadly.

“Your father raised a good man.”

Marcus shook his head.

“A good man shouldn't need this long to see the truth.”

I felt tears fill my eyes.

Ruth squeezed his hand.

“Then be the man you want to be now.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

Detective Brooks entered shortly afterward.

She had already spoken with Ruth.

But there were questions she wanted us to hear answered directly.

Ruth explained that Daniel approached her several weeks earlier.

He claimed the house deed needed to be updated.

When she refused to sign anything without Patricia, he became aggressive.

He told her she didn't deserve Richard's generosity.

Then he threatened to challenge her ownership.

“I thought he was bluffing,” Ruth whispered.

I shook my head.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't want you worried.”

I held her hand.

“Promise me something.”

“What?”

“Never protect my feelings by putting yourself in danger again.”

She nodded.

“I promise.”

Ruth continued.

A few days later, she noticed a black SUV following her.

Then the threatening messages began.

She tried to gather evidence.

But someone entered her apartment while she was out.

Important documents disappeared.

She became frightened and decided to come to my house.

Before she reached it, she was approached near a parking garage.

Two people forced her into a vehicle.

She remembered being frightened and struggling.

Then feeling dizzy.

When she regained awareness, she was in the hospital.

Daniel later appeared and told the staff he was helping her return home.

Instead, he took her to a secluded property.

I gripped her hand.

“Did he hurt you?”

She looked down.

“He frightened me.”

My heart broke.

Detective Brooks continued the interview gently.

“Ruth, tell them what you heard.”

Ruth looked at Marcus.

Her expression changed.

“Nia was planning something.”

Marcus stood very still.

“What?”

“She wanted the missing inheritance money blamed on you.”

His face drained of color.

Ruth explained that she overheard Daniel discussing false financial statements.

They intended to make it appear that Marcus had transferred estate funds into unauthorized accounts.

Nia would claim she discovered his misconduct.

She would present herself as the innocent wife trying to protect the family.

Then she would seek control over remaining marital assets through legal proceedings.

I felt sick.

“And the house?” I asked.

Ruth looked at me.

“They wanted you to sign away your occupancy rights so they could pressure me into selling.”

Marcus leaned against the wall.

I watched him absorb the truth.

His wife had not simply hidden money.

She had apparently prepared to destroy his reputation to protect herself.

“Tomorrow,” Ruth whispered, “Daniel planned to submit documents accusing Marcus of financial fraud.”

I looked toward Detective Brooks.

“Can you stop it?”

“We're taking steps to preserve the evidence and alert the appropriate authorities.”

Marcus stared at the floor.

Then he whispered, “She was going to ruin my life.”

I moved toward him.

He shook his head.

“Mom, I loved her.”

I wrapped my arms around him.

“I know.”

“I trusted her with everything.”

“I know.”

He began crying.

And I held him.

Just as I had when he was a child.

Except this time, I couldn't promise that everything would be simple again.

I could only promise he wouldn't face it alone.

Later that afternoon, Detective Brooks informed us that Daniel had been arrested.

Charles Whitmore had also been located and was being questioned.

Nia remained missing.

But investigators had secured electronic records connecting the disputed transfers to accounts controlled by Daniel's company.

Patricia said the evidence could help clear Marcus.

I felt relief.

Then Ruth asked me a question.

“Evelyn, did you show them Richard's letter?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

She looked concerned.

“The letter about the house wasn't the only one.”

I stared at her.

“There's another?”

Ruth nodded.

“Richard left a separate letter for Marcus.”

My heart tightened.

“Where?”

“In the small wooden box beneath the guest-room wardrobe.”

I remembered that box.

Richard kept old photographs and family keepsakes inside.

I hadn't opened it since his funeral.

“What does the letter say?” Marcus asked.

Ruth smiled gently.

“I don't know. Richard told me it was for you to read when you were ready.”

Marcus looked at me.

I nodded.

“We'll find it.”

That evening, we returned home.

Marcus went directly upstairs.

I followed.

Together, we opened the old wooden box.

Inside were photographs, birthday cards, and Richard's favorite pocket watch.

Beneath them lay a sealed envelope.

On the front, in my husband's handwriting, were three words.

“For My Son.”

Marcus picked it up.

His hands trembled.

“Mom, can you stay?”

I sat beside him.

“Of course.”

He opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

As he began reading, tears filled his eyes.

Then he stopped.

“Mom…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He held out the letter.

“Dad knew.”

My stomach tightened.

“Knew what?”

Marcus pointed to a sentence.

I read it.

And suddenly, I understood why Richard had been so careful with his final arrangements.

He had suspected that Charles Whitmore might one day use someone close to Marcus to reach our family assets.

But the next sentence frightened me even more.

Richard had written:

“If Daniel Whitmore ever approaches you through someone you love, do not sign anything until you speak with Patricia.”

I stared at the letter.

May you like

My husband had seen the danger coming.

And somehow, we had walked straight into it.
