Surprise

Chapter 6

I remembered Charles Whitmore as a man who always smiled too widely.

He had been Richard's business partner for almost fifteen years.

They started with a small construction company.

Richard handled operations.

Charles handled financing.

For a while, they worked well together.

Then the disagreements began.

Charles wanted bigger risks.

Richard wanted stability.

Charles wanted to borrow money against family assets.

Richard refused.

Eventually, their partnership ended.

I remembered the argument.

It happened in our living room.

Charles stood near the fireplace, shouting that Richard had cheated him.

Richard remained calm.

He told Charles that the accounts had been reviewed by independent auditors.

Charles could take what he was legally owed.

Nothing more.

Charles stormed out.

At the door, he turned toward me.

“You'll regret choosing his side.”

I hadn't thought about those words in years.

Now they came rushing back.

Samuel watched my face.

“You remember.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Why didn't Dad tell me about this?”

I looked at him.

“Your father didn't want you involved in business disputes.”

Samuel opened another folder.

“There's more.”

He explained that Charles had challenged the partnership settlement.

The dispute ended through a formal agreement.

Richard paid what the records showed was owed.

Charles signed a release.

But according to Samuel, Charles never accepted the outcome.

“He believed Richard humiliated him,” Samuel said.

I stared at the photograph.

“And now his son is working with Nia.”

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.”

Marcus looked sick.

“Did Nia know who Charles was when she married me?”

Samuel hesitated.

“I can't answer that.”

But the question remained between us.

Had Nia married Marcus because she loved him?

Or had someone encouraged her to enter our family?

I wanted to reject the thought.

It was too cruel.

Too calculated.

Yet everything we had uncovered suggested that money had shaped decisions we believed were personal.

Detective Brooks entered the room.

She had been reviewing Samuel's documents.

“Mrs. Bennett, we have an update on Ruth.”

I stood immediately.

“Where is she?”

“We located surveillance footage from Riverside Medical Center.”

My heart pounded.

“What does it show?”

“Ruth leaving with a man.”

“Was she forced?”

“The footage doesn't clearly establish that.”

I gripped the chair.

“Who was he?”

Detective Brooks placed a photograph on the table.

I recognized Daniel Whitmore.

Marcus cursed under his breath.

The detective continued.

“Hospital staff believed he was a family representative.”

I shook my head.

“He wasn't.”

“We're investigating how he obtained that access.”

“Where did he take her?”

“We traced his vehicle to a property outside the city.”

I leaned forward.

“Then she's there?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Please.”

My voice broke.

“Please don't let anything happen to her.”

Detective Brooks softened.

“We're pursuing the lead carefully.”

That evening, Marcus and I returned home.

The house felt enormous.

Every room reminded me of Ruth.

Her favorite chair near the kitchen window.

The ceramic bowl she bought at a church fundraiser.

The little calendar she kept beside the refrigerator.

I walked into the kitchen and began crying.

Marcus followed me.

“Mom.”

I shook my head.

“She was always here for us.”

He put his arms around me.

“I know.”

“And we let her disappear.”

“No,” he said firmly. “Someone chose to hurt her.”

I looked at him.

“We should have protected her.”

He nodded.

“We will.”

For the first time, I heard determination in his voice.

Not fear.

Not apology.

Determination.

That gave me hope.

The next morning, Patricia called.

She had obtained an emergency court order temporarily restraining certain disputed financial transfers.

The bank had also flagged the accounts for review.

Marcus's remaining inheritance was protected while investigators traced the missing funds.

I felt relieved.

But I couldn't celebrate.

Ruth was still missing.

And Nia hadn't returned.

Then my phone rang.

It was Nia.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus looked up.

“Answer it.”

I put the call on speaker.

“Hello, Nia.”

Her voice was strangely cheerful.

“Evelyn, I think we've had a misunderstanding.”

I almost laughed.

“A misunderstanding?”

“Yes. Emotions got out of hand.”

“Where are you?”

“Does that matter?”

“It does to the police.”

She went silent.

Then her tone changed.

“You didn't need to involve the authorities.”

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded for me to continue.

“Nia, where is Ruth?”

A pause.

“Why would I know?”

“Because your attorney removed her from the hospital.”

Nia inhaled sharply.

I heard it.

“What?”

“Daniel was caught on camera.”

Silence.

Then she whispered, “He wasn't supposed to do that.”

My blood turned cold.

“Do what?”

She quickly recovered.

“Nothing.”

“Nia.”

“Evelyn, listen to me carefully.”

I gripped the phone.

“You need to stop digging into things you don't understand.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“No. I'm warning you.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“Nia, this is Marcus.”

She gasped.

“Marcus?”

“Yes.”

Her voice softened immediately.

“Baby, thank God. I've been so worried.”

He stared at the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I'm safe.”

“That's not what I asked.”

She began crying.

“Your mother is destroying our marriage.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Nia, where is Ruth?”

The crying stopped.

I felt a chill.

“Marcus,” she said quietly, “you need to choose whose side you're on.”

He looked at me.

Then he answered.

“I'm on the side of the truth.”

The line went silent.

Then Nia whispered, “You'll regret that.”

She hung up.

Marcus stared at the phone.

I could see the hurt in his face.

But he didn't call her back.

Instead, he looked at me.

“Mom, I want to see every document Dad left me.”

I nodded.

“You will.”

He took a breath.

“And if my wife committed a crime, I won't protect her.”

My eyes filled.

I reached for his hand.

“Your father would be proud of you.”

He looked away.

Then whispered, “I hope so.”

An hour later, Detective Brooks called.

Her voice was urgent.

“Mrs. Bennett, we've entered the property connected to Daniel.”

I stood.

“Did you find Ruth?”

A pause.

Then she answered.

“Yes.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

I covered my mouth.

Tears spilled down my face.

“Thank God.”

But the detective continued.

“She's weak and receiving medical attention.”

I nodded even though she couldn't see me.

“Can I speak to her?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because she has information that may put someone else in danger.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Detective Brooks hesitated.

“Your son.”

I looked at Marcus.

He was standing beside me.

“What do you mean?”

The detective took a breath.

“Ruth says Nia's plan was never just to steal the inheritance.”

I could barely speak.

“Then what was it?”

“She says someone intended to make Marcus appear responsible for the missing money.”

The room went silent.

May you like

Then Detective Brooks said the words that changed everything.

“And according to Ruth, the final step was supposed to happen tomorrow.”
