Surprise

Chapter 8

Andre Wilson was twenty-seven years old.

He worked nights as a parking attendant near the hospital.

According to Detective Price, he had been scheduled to finish his shift shortly before Maya was struck.

Afterward, he stopped answering calls.

His apartment was empty.

His supervisor hadn't heard from him.

And no one knew where he had gone.

I stared at Maya's notebook.

"She knew him."

"Apparently."

"Why didn't he come forward?"

"We don't know."

I thought about Marcus appearing at Renee's house.

The way he tried the door.

The threats.

The money.

I could imagine how frightened a young man might feel after witnessing something terrible.

Detective Price took the business card into evidence.

She promised to tell me if Andre was found.

Two days passed.

Then three.

Meanwhile, the case attracted public attention.

The hospital issued a statement acknowledging an investigation into financial irregularities.

Marcus's company suspended operations.

Elaine was removed from her position.

Reporters began gathering outside my street.

Some wanted photographs of Maya.

Others wanted interviews.

One reporter asked whether my daughter had been involved in the missing money.

I felt like screaming.

Maya was the one who had discovered the fraud.

She was the one who had tried to stop it.

But even in death, people were questioning her.

Daniel advised me not to discuss evidence publicly.

I understood why.

Still, I couldn't let strangers turn my daughter into a scandal.

With help from a victim-support advocate, I prepared a brief statement.

I stood outside the courthouse beside Renee.

My hands trembled around the paper.

I looked at the cameras.

"My daughter Maya was nineteen years old. She was kind, hardworking, and brave. She believed people should be held accountable when they harmed others."

My voice broke.

I took a breath.

"She deserves to be remembered for the life she lived, not the lies surrounding her death."

I lowered the paper.

"I am asking everyone to respect the investigation and allow our family to grieve."

Then I walked away.

Renee squeezed my hand.

"You did good."

I shook my head.

"I just want her back."

My sister pulled me close.

"I know."

That evening, Detective Price called with unexpected news.

Andre Wilson had contacted an attorney.

He wanted to cooperate.

But he was terrified.

He claimed somebody had warned him that his family would suffer if he spoke.

The attorney arranged for detectives to interview him in a secure location.

I waited for updates all night.

At six the next morning, Detective Price called again.

"Nia, Andre gave us a statement."

I sat upright.

"What did he see?"

She spoke slowly.

"He witnessed an argument between Maya and Marcus near the garage entrance."

My hands tightened around the blanket.

"Was Elaine there?"

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

"Tell me."

Andre said Maya had been holding a laptop bag.

Marcus demanded that she hand it over.

Maya refused.

Elaine tried to calm the situation.

But Marcus became increasingly angry.

Andre heard Maya say she had already made copies.

Then Marcus grabbed her bag.

She pulled away.

The argument moved toward the driveway.

My heart hammered.

"What happened next?"

"Andre says Maya broke free and tried to reach the pedestrian exit."

I held my breath.

"Marcus and Elaine entered the sedan. The vehicle followed her into the garage approach lane."

"Who was driving?"

"Andre identified Marcus."

The room seemed to spin.

I pressed my hand against the wall.

Detective Price continued carefully.

"Andre heard an engine accelerate. He turned and saw the sedan strike Maya."

I made a sound I had never heard come from my own body.

Not a scream.

Not a sob.

Something deeper.

Something torn out of me.

Renee rushed into the room.

She took the phone as I sank onto the floor.

Detective Price remained on the line.

I could hear her voice.

Calm.

Concerned.

Telling Renee to stay with me.

But I could think only of Maya.

Running.

Trying to escape.

Probably calling for me.

My daughter had been hunted by a man I welcomed into our home.

When I finally spoke, my voice was barely audible.

"Did he stop?"

Renee hesitated.

I shook my head.

"Ask her."

She repeated my question.

Detective Price answered.

Andre reported that the car stopped briefly.

Elaine got out.

She looked toward Maya.

Then she returned to the vehicle.

Marcus drove away.

I closed my eyes.

They had left her there.

Alone.

Injured.

Afraid.

Andre had called emergency services, but he panicked when he realized Marcus was connected to powerful people at the hospital.

He left before officers arrived.

Later, threatening messages convinced him to hide.

I hated him for leaving.

Then I remembered how frightened Maya had been.

Fear makes people do things they never imagined.

At least he had finally told the truth.

By that afternoon, investigators obtained additional footage from another nearby camera.

It supported significant parts of Andre's account.

Combined with the physical evidence and vehicle records, it strengthened the case against Marcus.

The following morning, Detective Price called again.

Her voice sounded different.

Steadier.

"Nia, I wanted you to hear this from me."

I gripped the phone.

"The prosecutor has filed a murder charge against Marcus in connection with Maya's death."

My knees weakened.

"And Elaine?"

"She faces charges connected to the fraud and allegations concerning her role in the events surrounding the collision. Her exact criminal responsibility will be determined through the legal process."

I closed my eyes.

After days of fear, the truth was finally becoming visible.

But Detective Price wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"Andre remembered something Maya said during the argument."

My heart pounded.

"What did she say?"

Detective Price paused.

"She told Marcus, 'Even if something happens to me, my mother will find out what you did.'"

I covered my mouth.

Maya had believed in me.

Even after everything.

May you like

Even when I hadn't believed in her.

And that knowledge hurt more than I could bear.
