Surprise

Chapter 5

The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

I couldn't move.

The man on the porch was staring into the camera.

His face was older than the photographs.

His beard was gray.

A long scar crossed his forehead.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

The same dark eyes I saw every morning in my mirror.

My mother ran toward the door.

I grabbed her.

"Wait!"

She tried to pull away.

"That's your father!"

"We don't know who's with him."

I checked the other cameras.

A black SUV sat across the street.

Its windows were tinted.

My stomach tightened.

"Mom, stay back."

I called Detective Grant.

"Someone claiming to be my father is outside."

"Do not open the door until officers arrive."

I stared at the screen.

The man swayed.

Then collapsed.

"He's hurt!"

I ran outside before I could stop myself.

My mother followed.

The man was lying against the porch railing.

His breathing was ragged.

Blood soaked the sleeve of his coat.

I knelt beside him.

"Sir?"

His eyes opened.

"Maya."

My throat closed.

"How do you know me?"

He reached toward my face.

"Your mother sent me pictures."

I looked at Denise.

She began sobbing.

"I never stopped hoping."

The man smiled weakly.

"You look just like her."

Then he whispered, "We have to go."

I glanced toward the SUV.

Its headlights flashed.

A door opened.

"Get inside!" I shouted.

Evelyn helped us drag him through the doorway.

I locked the deadbolt.

Seconds later, the SUV sped away.

My hands were shaking so violently that I nearly dropped my phone.

Detective Grant arrived with two uniformed officers and an ambulance.

The paramedics confirmed that Gabriel had a deep cut on his arm and signs of severe exhaustion.

They wanted to take him to the hospital.

But he grabbed my hand.

"Please don't let Hayes find me."

Detective Grant crouched beside him.

"Victor Hayes?"

Gabriel nodded.

"He knows I escaped."

My blood turned cold.

"Escaped from where?"

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"A private medical facility in rural Georgia."

He was taken to a hospital under police protection.

I rode beside my mother.

For the first time in my life, I was sitting near the father I had never known.

And I didn't know whether to hug him or scream at him.

At the hospital, doctors treated his injuries and evaluated his condition.

Gabriel had lost significant weight.

He appeared malnourished.

Old scars marked his wrists.

The medical staff documented everything carefully.

When he was finally stable, Detective Grant arranged a recorded interview.

Gabriel asked for me to stay.

I sat beside his bed.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words broke something inside me.

I had imagined meeting my father a thousand times.

Sometimes he was kind.

Sometimes cruel.

Sometimes he had no explanation.

But I had never imagined finding him looking like someone who had spent half his life fighting to survive.

"Where were you?" I whispered.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

"Charles Whitmore had me taken after I copied the foundation's accounts."

"Why didn't he kill you?"

"Because I encrypted the documents."

I leaned forward.

"He needed the password?"

Gabriel nodded.

"He believed I was the only person who knew it."

"But Rosalind had copies."

"Only part of the evidence."

He swallowed.

"The full records included names of powerful people who used the foundation to hide illegal payments."

Detective Grant took notes.

"How were you held for twenty-three years?"

Gabriel closed his eyes.

"At first, they kept me in a private building. Later, Charles arranged fraudulent medical paperwork claiming I was permanently incapacitated."

My mother began crying.

Gabriel continued.

"I was moved between facilities under false names. Some staff thought I was a patient without family."

"How did you escape?" I asked.

"A nurse noticed my records didn't match my condition. She helped me contact an outside advocate."

He looked at Detective Grant.

"That nurse may be in danger."

Grant nodded.

"We'll protect her."

I reached for his hand.

"Why come to our house now?"

"Because I heard about the pageant."

His eyes filled.

"The controversy was on the television in the staff lounge."

I stared.

"You recognized Diane?"

"And Evelyn."

His voice cracked.

"Rosalind's daughter."

I squeezed his fingers.

Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.

"Did Charles kill Rosalind?"

Gabriel went silent.

Finally, he whispered, "I heard him order someone to frighten her."

My stomach twisted.

"He wanted the evidence back."

"Did he start the fire?"

"I don't know."

He shook his head.

"But Victor Hayes told me she was dead the following morning."

Detective Grant leaned forward.

"Was Diane involved?"

Gabriel looked at her.

"Diane knew everything."

A cold silence settled over the room.

That evening, Evelyn and Nia arrived with Margaret.

They had visited an independent medical clinic for a DNA comparison and were waiting for results.

Nia stood beside Gabriel's bed.

He stared at her.

Then his face changed.

"Raymond's little girl."

Nia covered her mouth.

"You knew my father?"

Gabriel nodded.

"He was helping Rosalind find her stolen baby."

Nia stepped closer.

"Did he know where she was?"

Gabriel's eyes filled.

"Raymond discovered that a baby had been placed with a family connected to pageant staff."

She began to tremble.

"Was it me?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"I can't prove it."

Nia cried quietly.

"He died before he could tell me anything."

Gabriel reached for her hand.

"He died trying to make things right."

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Detective Grant stepped outside to answer her own call.

When she returned, her expression was grim.

"We have a problem."

I stood.

"What?"

"Victor Hayes has been located."

"Where?"

"At the Whitmore estate."

"Then arrest him."

Grant shook her head.

"He isn't responding."

My stomach dropped.

"Why?"

She looked at Gabriel.

"Someone found him unconscious in the garage. He's in critical condition."

Gabriel gripped the blanket.

"Charles."

Grant's phone rang again.

She listened.

Then whispered something I couldn't hear.

When she ended the call, she looked directly at me.

"Charles Whitmore is missing."

I stared at her.

"Missing?"

She nodded.

"And investigators found a room in his home containing photographs of you, Evelyn, and Nia."

My skin prickled.

"Photographs?"

"Years of surveillance."

My mother covered her mouth.

Grant continued.

"There was also a handwritten list."

I forced myself to ask.

"What list?"

She looked at the floor.

"Three names."

"Maya Carter."

"Evelyn Brooks."

"Nia Walker."

May you like

Beside each name, someone had written the same terrifying word.

ELIMINATE.
