Surprise

Chapter 4

I read Megan's handwritten note until the words stopped making sense.

Use Lily if necessary.

My daughter was six.

She loved butterflies.

She slept with a stuffed rabbit.

She still asked me to check under her bed for monsters.

And my husband's sister had written her name beside a financial scheme.

I looked at David.

"What does that mean?"

He hesitated.

"We don't know exactly."

I shook my head.

"Don't protect me from the truth."

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Rachel, we're not trying to."

I stared at the document.

"Then tell me what you think."

David took a breath.

"We believe Mark needed your signature to release or confirm certain property rights."

I nodded slowly.

"And Megan wanted to pressure me."

"Possibly."

I looked toward the hallway.

Lily was sitting beside Anthony, drinking apple juice.

Her cheek was bruised.

She was hugging the stuffed rabbit.

My heart broke.

"She hurt my daughter to get at me."

David's face darkened.

"We're going to investigate every part of this."

I stared at him.

"And what happens to Lily?"

Dad looked at me.

"What do you mean?"

"She's already been hurt."

My voice cracked.

"How do I explain that her father let it happen?"

Nobody answered.

Because there wasn't a simple answer.

That night, I took Lily to my father's house.

It was a large home in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by trees.

I had spent many holidays there.

But walking inside with my daughter in my arms felt different.

I wasn't visiting.

I was escaping.

Dad showed us to the upstairs guest suite.

It had two bedrooms connected by a small sitting room.

Lily immediately noticed the soft pink blanket on the bed.

"Mommy, can we sleep here?"

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, baby."

She looked frightened.

"Are we going back to Grandma Evelyn's tomorrow?"

My chest tightened.

"No."

She relaxed slightly.

Then whispered, "Good."

That one word nearly destroyed me.

Good.

My daughter was relieved she wouldn't have to return to her grandmother's house.

I sat beside her.

"Lily, has Aunt Megan ever hurt you before?"

She looked down.

My stomach tightened.

"Sweetheart?"

She began picking at the blanket.

"Sometimes she squeezes my arm."

I felt cold.

"When?"

"When I make noise."

I swallowed.

"Does Daddy know?"

Lily nodded.

My heart stopped.

"He said Aunt Megan gets stressed."

I stared at her.

My husband knew.

He knew his sister was frightening our child.

And he still defended her.

I hugged Lily tightly.

"I'm so sorry."

She looked up.

"Did I make Daddy mad?"

I wiped my eyes.

"No."

"Because he didn't hug me."

My throat closed.

I remembered Mark standing beside the Thanksgiving table.

His silence.

His refusal to look at her.

I held my daughter.

"Daddy made a mistake."

Lily whispered, "A big one?"

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, sweetheart. A very big one."

She fell asleep in my arms.

I stayed awake for hours.

Just watching her breathe.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Mark.

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

"Rachel."

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere safe."

He sighed.

"Can we stop this?"

I felt anger rise.

"Stop what?"

"This ridiculous fight."

I closed my eyes.

"Our daughter was slapped."

"I know."

"Your sister hit her."

"I know."

"And you defended Megan."

He hesitated.

"Rachel, it happened quickly."

I stared at the wall.

"You had plenty of time afterward."

Silence.

Then he said, "Mom says your brothers threatened her."

I almost laughed.

"Your mother watched her daughter assault a child."

Mark's voice hardened.

"Don't exaggerate."

Something inside me went still.

"I'm done."

He paused.

"Done with what?"

"Protecting your family from the consequences of what they do."

He sighed.

"Rachel, please. We have bigger problems right now."

My heart pounded.

"What bigger problems?"

Silence.

Then he spoke carefully.

"I need you to come home tomorrow."

I closed my eyes.

"Why?"

"There's some paperwork."

There it was.

The thing David warned me about.

I kept my voice steady.

"What paperwork?"

"Just business documents."

I stared at the ceiling.

"What kind?"

"Rachel, don't start."

I swallowed.

"Does it involve my mother's house?"

The silence lasted so long that I thought the call had dropped.

Then Mark whispered, "Who told you?"

My heart broke.

"You were going to let me sign without knowing?"

"That's not fair."

I laughed bitterly.

"Fair?"

He became defensive.

"I've been trying to save our family."

"By risking my inheritance?"

"By protecting everything we've built."

I looked toward Lily's sleeping face.

"Mark, what did you build?"

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"Because right now, all I see is a man who let his sister hurt his daughter."

His breathing changed.

"Rachel."

"And then tried to use me to rescue his business."

He lowered his voice.

"You don't understand how serious this is."

"Then explain it."

A long pause.

Then he whispered, "If you don't sign, I could lose everything."

I felt tears gathering.

"You're asking me to lose what my mother left me so you don't lose what you gambled away."

"That's not what happened."

I looked down.

"Then tell me what happened."

He was silent.

Finally, he said, "Megan made some decisions without telling me."

I almost laughed.

"Of course."

"Rachel, I'm serious."

"So am I."

I took a breath.

"Don't contact me tonight unless it's about Lily's well-being."

Then I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

But for the first time, I felt something other than fear.

Clarity.

The next morning, David arrived with news.

Naomi Brooks had agreed to speak with our attorney.

She had also provided additional emails.

One message was from Evelyn.

It was sent three days before Thanksgiving.

I read it.

Rachel needs to understand that family loyalty comes before old property.

I felt sick.

Then another message appeared.

Megan had replied.

If she refuses, Mark needs to choose between his wife and us.

I stared at David.

"He already chose."

David nodded.

Then he opened one more attachment.

It was a draft agreement.

At the bottom was my name.

Rachel Bennett.

And beside it, a signature.

My signature.

I hadn't signed anything.

I stared at the page.

Then whispered, "That's forged."

David looked grim.

"We think so too."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

May you like

Because if someone had already forged my signature, the Thanksgiving confrontation hadn't been their first attempt.

And the people I trusted had been planning to take my mother's house long before Megan slapped Lily.
