Chapter 2

The first person to step out of the SUV was my older brother.
David Bennett.
Forty-five years old.
Six feet three.
Broad shoulders.
A face that usually carried a quiet smile.
But that night, he wasn't smiling.
Behind him came our younger brother, Anthony.
And from the second vehicle emerged two people I hadn't expected to see.
My father.
And his attorney.
I stood at the bottom of Evelyn's front steps with Lily crying against my shoulder.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then David saw my daughter's face.
His entire expression changed.
"What happened?"
I tried to speak.
My throat closed.
David crossed the driveway.
"Rachel."
His voice softened.
"Talk to me."
I turned Lily slightly.
Her cheek was swollen.
The mark from Megan's hand was clearly visible.
David stared.
Then his eyes lifted toward the doorway.
Mark stood frozen.
Megan stepped backward.
"What happened to my niece?" David asked.
His voice was dangerously quiet.
I swallowed.
"Megan slapped her."
Anthony stopped walking.
My father went completely still.
David looked at Mark.
"Is that true?"
Mark stepped down one stair.
"David, this is a family misunderstanding."
My brother's face hardened.
"A misunderstanding?"
I felt Lily tighten her arms around my neck.
David noticed immediately.
He stepped away from Mark and focused on her.
"Hey, princess."
Lily lifted her tearful face.
"Uncle David."
He swallowed hard.
"Are you hurting?"
She nodded.
He looked toward me.
"She needs to be checked by a doctor."
I nodded.
"I know."
My father approached slowly.
He was sixty-seven, with silver hair and the same deep brown eyes I inherited.
His name was Samuel Bennett.
Most people in Atlanta knew him as a successful property developer.
But to me, he was simply Dad.
The man who taught me to drive.
The man who sat beside my hospital bed when Lily was born.
The man who never let me forget that I had a home outside my marriage.
He looked at Lily's face.
Then closed his eyes.
When he opened them, they were shining.
"Sweetheart, who hurt you?"
Lily whispered, "Aunt Megan."
My father looked toward the house.
Megan immediately started talking.
"Samuel, Rachel is exaggerating. Lily spilled wine everywhere, and—"
"Stop."
My father's voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
Megan closed her mouth.
David turned toward Mark.
"You stood there and let your sister hit your daughter?"
Mark looked furious.
"That's not what happened."
I stared at him.
"Then tell them what happened."
He looked at me.
"Rachel, please."
"No."
My voice trembled.
"Tell them."
Mark's face reddened.
He glanced toward his mother.
Evelyn had appeared behind him.
She walked down the steps, adjusting her navy velvet dress.
"Samuel, this is an unfortunate disagreement."
My father looked at her.
"An adult struck my granddaughter."
Evelyn lifted her chin.
"Children sometimes need correction."
David took one step toward her.
My father raised his hand.
David stopped.
Then Dad spoke.
"Nobody in my family raises a hand against a child."
The driveway went silent.
Evelyn looked offended.
"Your family?"
My father stared at her.
"Yes."
Something about those two words made her expression change.
I didn't understand why.
Not yet.
Anthony opened the rear door of the second SUV.
"Rachel, let's get Lily somewhere safe."
I nodded.
My father touched my shoulder.
"Go with Anthony. We'll follow."
I hesitated.
"What about Mark?"
David looked toward my husband.
"He's about to make a decision."
Mark frowned.
"What decision?"
David's voice became cold.
"Whether he wants to act like Lily's father or keep pretending his sister did nothing wrong."
Mark looked toward me.
Then toward Evelyn.
His hesitation lasted only a few seconds.
But it told me everything.
"I think everyone needs to calm down," he said.
I almost laughed.
My daughter had been slapped.
I had been humiliated.
And my husband still wanted to protect his family's feelings.
David nodded slowly.
"That's your answer."
Then he turned away.
I carried Lily into the SUV.
Anthony closed the door.
Inside, the seats were warm.
Lily curled against me.
Her little fingers clutched my dress.
"Mommy?"
I kissed her forehead.
"Yes, baby?"
"Did I do something bad?"
My heart shattered.
"No."
She looked up.
"Because Aunt Megan said I ruined Thanksgiving."
Tears filled my eyes.
"You didn't ruin anything."
Her lip trembled.
"Is Daddy mad at me?"
I couldn't answer immediately.
Because I didn't know how to explain what her father had just done.
So I held her tighter.
"Daddy's feelings are his responsibility. You didn't do anything wrong."
She began crying again.
Anthony looked at us through the rearview mirror.
His eyes were wet.
"We're going to take care of you, little one."
Lily nodded.
Then buried her face against my chest.
As we pulled away, I looked through the rear window.
David stood beside my father.
Mark was arguing.
Megan looked furious.
And Evelyn was pointing toward the vehicles.
I couldn't hear their words.
But I could see something strange.
My father wasn't arguing anymore.
He had taken a folder from his attorney.
And Mark was staring at it.
His face looked completely different.
Frightened.
Then my phone rang.
David.
I answered.
"What's happening?"
His voice was tight.
"Rachel, where are you going?"
"Anthony's taking us to the hospital."
"Good."
I swallowed.
"David, what's going on?"
He hesitated.
Then said something that made my stomach drop.
"There's something about Mark's business you need to know."
I frowned.
"What business?"
"His company."
My heart started pounding.
"What about it?"
David took a breath.
"The reason Dad came tonight wasn't Thanksgiving."
I stared at the phone.
"Then why?"
He was silent for a moment.
Then whispered, "Because Mark has been hiding something from you."
I looked down at Lily.
She had finally stopped crying.
My voice shook.
"What?"
David answered carefully.
"Your husband borrowed money against property that doesn't belong to him."
My stomach tightened.
"What property?"
There was another pause.
May you like
Then David said four words that changed everything.
"The house your mother left you."
