Surprise

Chapter 1

The glass of water hit my face before I had a chance to move.

Cold water poured down my cheeks, soaked my hair, and spread across the champagne dress I had carefully chosen for our first family dinner since bringing my son home.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

My mother-in-law stood three feet away, holding an empty crystal glass.

And she was smiling.

"Mom! What the hell are you doing?"

My husband, Marcus, jumped from the sofa.

But Evelyn didn't even flinch.

"I'm doing what someone should have done three years ago," she snapped. "Teaching this woman where she belongs."

I stood in the middle of our beautiful living room, water dripping onto the marble floor.

My newborn son, Noah, slept peacefully in his stroller near the fireplace.

He was only twelve days old.

Twelve days.

My body was still recovering from childbirth, and I had barely slept since leaving the hospital.

Yet the woman who was supposed to be his grandmother had just humiliated me inside my own home.

"Why would you do that?" I whispered.

Evelyn pointed directly at my face.

"Because you ruined this family the moment you married my son."

I looked at Marcus.

My husband.

The man who had promised to protect me through everything.

I waited for him to tell his mother to leave.

Instead, he looked between us.

"Mom, you're upset. Let's just calm down."

Something inside me went completely still.

"Calm down?" I repeated.

Marcus avoided my eyes.

"She's been under a lot of pressure lately, Nia."

I almost laughed.

Pressure?

I had carried his child for nine months while helping keep his struggling company alive.

I had spent countless nights listening to his fears about losing everything.

I had defended Evelyn whenever my father questioned her intentions.

And now Marcus wanted me to understand her feelings?

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"See? My son knows I'm right."

I stared at her.

Then I looked at Marcus one last time.

"Are you going to defend me?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told me everything.

For three years, I had confused patience with love.

I had allowed insult after insult because I believed family meant making sacrifices.

I had ignored Evelyn's comments about my upbringing, my career, and my ability to become a mother.

I had even forgiven her for announcing at our wedding that Marcus deserved someone more suitable.

But I couldn't forgive this.

Not anymore.

I walked toward Noah's stroller.

"Nia, where are you going?" Marcus asked.

I carefully lifted my sleeping son, supporting his tiny head against my chest.

Then I reached for my phone.

My fingers trembled as I found the number I had avoided calling for months.

My father answered immediately.

"Princess?"

That one word nearly broke me.

I hadn't heard him call me that in so long.

"Dad."

My voice cracked.

"I'm done protecting them."

Silence filled the line.

Then his voice changed.

"What happened?"

I swallowed.

"Evelyn threw water in my face. Marcus stood there and made excuses for her."

My father didn't speak for several seconds.

When he finally answered, his voice was frighteningly calm.

"Are you and Noah safe?"

"Yes."

"Did anyone touch the baby?"

"No."

"Then listen carefully. You don't have to endure another minute of this."

Behind me, Evelyn laughed.

"Who are you calling? Your daddy?"

I ignored her.

My father continued.

"Do you remember the documents I asked you to sign before Noah was born?"

"Yes."

"Do you understand what activating them means?"

I looked around the magnificent house.

The marble floors.

The imported furniture.

The expensive artwork.

Everything Evelyn loved showing off to her friends.

Everything Marcus believed his success had purchased.

"Yes, Dad."

My voice stopped shaking.

"Activate everything."

Evelyn's smile faded slightly.

Marcus approached me.

"Nia, what does that mean?"

I ended the call.

Almost immediately, my phone vibrated.

A notification appeared from our family investment office.

PROPERTY TRANSFER — CANCELED.

ACCOUNT ACCESS — REVOKED.

COMPANY CREDIT FACILITY — SUSPENDED PENDING REVIEW.

I turned the screen toward Marcus.

His eyes moved across the messages.

"What is this?"

"The truth."

He frowned.

"Nia, stop playing games."

I looked him directly in the eyes.

"Do you remember when your company almost collapsed eighteen months ago?"

His expression tightened.

"Of course."

"And the mysterious investor who saved it?"

"Yes."

"That investor was my father."

Marcus went silent.

I continued.

"The loan keeping your company operating came from his private investment firm."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"That's impossible."

I looked at her.

"Is it?"

She shook her head.

"Marcus built that company himself."

"He did build it," I replied. "But my father kept it from going bankrupt."

Marcus gripped the back of the sofa.

"What about the house?"

I gave him a sad smile.

"The ownership transfer you were expecting next month has been canceled."

Evelyn's face turned pale.

I looked around the room one final time.

"The house, the company loan, the accounts. My father funded all of it."

Marcus stared at his mother.

For the first time that evening, neither of them had anything to say.

Then my phone rang again.

It was Dad.

I answered.

"Yes?"

"Nia, I need you to listen carefully."

His voice sounded different.

Urgent.

"Our security team reviewed the footage from your house."

My stomach tightened.

"What footage?"

"The recording from before you came downstairs."

I glanced toward the small security camera above the hallway entrance.

Evelyn followed my gaze.

Her entire expression changed.

My father continued.

"Sweetheart, security found something Evelyn did before you entered the room."

Evelyn suddenly lunged toward me.

"Give me that phone!"

Marcus caught her arm.

"Mom? What are you doing?"

She fought against his grip.

"That recording isn't what it looks like!"

My blood turned cold.

I hadn't even seen it.

Yet Evelyn already knew what was coming.

"Dad," I whispered, holding Noah closer.

"What did she do?"

My father drew a long breath.

May you like

"Nia, what I'm about to tell you changes everything."

And Evelyn began screaming for him to stop.
