Chapter 1

The moment my wife slammed my nine-year-old daughter's dinner plate across the table, I knew something was terribly wrong.
But I had no idea that the little phone hidden inside Maya's pocket was about to expose a secret that would destroy my marriage.
"You're not eating until you learn to keep your mouth shut!"
Denise's voice echoed through our dining room.
I had just stepped through the doorway after a long day at work.
My daughter sat frozen in her chair.
Her small hands gripped the edge of the table.
Tears filled her eyes.
And her dinner sat several feet away, completely untouched.
"What did you just say to my daughter?"
Denise spun around.
For a second, I saw pure panic in her face.
Then she smiled.
"Marcus, honey. You're home early."
I didn't smile back.
"Why did you take Maya's food?"
Denise folded her arms.
"She's been disrespectful all day. I'm teaching her some manners."
I looked at Maya.
She was wearing her favorite lavender T-shirt, her neat braids hanging over her shoulders.
Normally, she would have run to hug me the second I got home.
Tonight, she barely moved.
"Maya?"
She lifted her head.
"Daddy..."
Her voice cracked.
"That's not why she's mad."
Denise turned sharply.
"Maya, enough!"
Something inside me went cold.
"Denise, let her speak."
My wife laughed nervously.
"Marcus, seriously? You're going to believe a child who's been throwing tantrums all afternoon?"
I walked around the dining table.
Maya immediately reached for my hand.
Her fingers were trembling.
"Baby, tell me what happened."
She looked toward Denise.
Then back at me.
"She told me never to tell you what happens when you're at work."
The room fell silent.
I turned toward my wife.
"What is she talking about?"
Denise shook her head.
"She's making things up."
Maya squeezed my hand harder.
"I'm not lying, Daddy."
"I know you need to tell me something. I'm listening."
Denise took a step forward.
"Marcus, she's trying to turn you against me!"
I raised my hand.
"Stop interrupting her."
Maya swallowed.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small black phone.
It was an old phone I'd given her for emergencies.
It didn't have games or social media.
Just calling, a camera, and a recording app.
Maya held it toward me.
"I recorded her yesterday."
Denise's face changed instantly.
"Maya!"
My daughter flinched.
I stepped between them.
"Don't."
Denise stared at the phone.
"Give me that."
"No," I said.
"Marcus, she recorded me without permission!"
"Why are you so afraid of what she recorded?"
Denise opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Maya pressed a button.
A familiar voice filled the dining room.
Denise's voice.
Cold.
Sharp.
Almost unrecognizable.
"Your father will never believe you over me."
My stomach tightened.
On the recording, Maya's small voice asked, "Why are you being mean to me?"
Denise answered.
"Because you need to learn your place in this house."
I stared at my wife.
She looked away.
"What is this?" I whispered.
Denise shook her head.
"It's out of context."
Maya pressed another button.
Denise suddenly lunged forward.
"Turn that off!"
I blocked her path.
"Back away from my daughter."
"Marcus, you don't understand!"
"Then explain."
Denise's eyes darted toward Maya.
"She's been spying on me!"
I felt my anger rising.
But I forced myself to stay calm.
I couldn't frighten Maya more than she already was.
I turned toward her.
"Sweetheart, you're safe. Keep going."
Maya looked at the phone.
Her lips trembled.
"Daddy..."
"Yes, baby?"
"That's not the worst part."
I felt my heart pounding.
"What do you mean?"
She looked at Denise.
Then she whispered something that made the entire room feel colder.
"She didn't know I was recording when the other man came over."
I slowly turned toward my wife.
Denise's face drained of color.
"What other man?" I asked.
Maya gripped my hand.
"The man she tells me to call Uncle Raymond."
I stared at Denise.
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
I'd never heard of anyone named Raymond.
"Who is Raymond?"
Denise shook her head.
"Marcus, please. We need to discuss this privately."
My daughter pulled me closer.
"No, Daddy."
I looked down.
Maya's cheeks were wet with tears.
"She said if I told you about him, she'd make sure you never saw me again."
I couldn't breathe.
Denise reached for the phone again.
I stepped back.
"Don't touch it."
"Marcus!"
I looked straight into her eyes.
"Who is Raymond?"
She didn't answer.
Maya pressed play.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
Deep.
Unfamiliar.
And terribly calm.
"How much longer until Marcus signs the papers?"
My wife's recorded voice answered.
"Not much longer. Once he signs, the house will be ours."
I stared at Denise.
Then the man laughed.
"And what about the little girl?"
There was a pause.
A long, terrible pause.
Then Denise said five words I would never forget.
"We'll deal with her afterward."
My knees nearly gave out.
I looked at my daughter.
She was shaking.
And suddenly, I understood.
This wasn't just about a stolen dinner.

My wife had been hiding a stranger inside my home.
And whatever they were planning involved my daughter.
