Surprise

Chapter 6

The ballroom doors opened.

Music filled the air.

And every person in the room stood.

I gripped my mother's arm.

For a moment, I forgot everything that had happened upstairs.

The paint.

The shouting.

The secrets.

All I could see was Marcus.

He stood at the end of the aisle.

Tall.

Handsome.

Nervous.

And when he saw me, his expression changed completely.

His mouth opened.

Then he covered his face with one hand.

He was crying.

I felt my own eyes fill.

The ivory-and-gold gown moved softly around my feet as I walked.

The flowers glowed beneath the bright lights.

The musicians played the song we had chosen together.

And for the first time that morning, I felt like a bride.

Not a victim.

Not an embarrassed woman.

Not a sister caught in a family argument.

A bride.

About to marry the man she loved.

Mom squeezed my hand.

"I'm proud of you."

I looked at her.

"I love you, Mom."

Her eyes filled.

"I love you too."

Then I added quietly, "But we're going to talk after today."

She nodded.

"I know."

At the altar, Marcus reached for my hands.

"You look beautiful."

I laughed through tears.

"So do you."

He smiled.

"That's not usually what people say to the groom."

"Well, I'm not usually wearing my grandmother's wedding dress."

His eyes softened.

"She would have loved this."

I nodded.

"Yes."

The officiant began.

I barely heard the first few words.

My heart was beating too loudly.

Then Marcus squeezed my fingers.

I looked into his eyes.

And the rest of the room disappeared.

When the time came for our vows, he unfolded a small piece of paper.

His hands were shaking.

"Nia, I fell in love with you because you make ordinary days feel extraordinary."

I smiled.

He continued.

"You have a way of making people feel seen. You care deeply. You fight for the people you love."

His voice broke.

"And today, I watched you stand strong when someone tried to take your happiness away."

I began crying.

Marcus stepped closer.

"I promise that our marriage will be a place where you never have to prove your worth."

The room became silent.

"I promise to love you when life is easy and when it isn't."

He swallowed.

"And I promise that no matter what happens, you will never face it alone."

I could barely speak when my turn came.

I looked at the man who had held me through grief.

Who had celebrated my successes.

Who had never asked me to become smaller so he could feel bigger.

"Marcus, you have loved me in ways I didn't know I needed."

My voice shook.

"You have seen me frightened, stubborn, exhausted, and broken."

A few guests laughed softly.

"And somehow, you still choose me."

He smiled.

"Every time."

I took a breath.

"I promise to choose you too."

Then I looked at him through tears.

"Not because life will always be perfect."

I smiled.

"But because I know we can face the imperfect parts together."

When the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, Marcus kissed me.

The ballroom erupted in applause.

I laughed.

He lifted my hand.

And for one beautiful moment, everything felt right.

Then I looked toward the second row.

Vanessa was sitting beside an empty chair.

She wasn't smiling.

Her eyes were red.

She watched us with an expression I couldn't read.

When our eyes met, she looked away.

I felt a familiar ache.

But I refused to let it swallow the moment.

Marcus leaned toward me.

"Ready to celebrate, Mrs. Williams?"

I smiled.

"Absolutely."

The reception began an hour later.

Guests complimented the heirloom gown.

My friends asked about its history.

Several relatives cried when they recognized Grandma's embroidery.

I told them how we had restored it together.

How she had saved it.

How the tiny crooked stitch near the waist had been mine.

People smiled.

Some laughed.

And I felt Grandma close to me in a way I hadn't felt since her funeral.

During dinner, Renee, my cousin and maid of honor, gave a beautiful speech.

She talked about Marcus and me.

Our friendship.

Our love.

The way we supported each other.

Then she raised her glass.

"To Nia and Marcus. May your home always be filled with kindness, honesty, and laughter."

Everyone cheered.

I lifted my glass.

Marcus kissed my cheek.

But across the room, I noticed something strange.

Vanessa was speaking to a man near the ballroom entrance.

He wore a dark suit.

I didn't recognize him.

She looked upset.

He seemed to be arguing with her.

Then he handed her a folder.

My stomach tightened.

I watched Vanessa open it.

Her face turned pale.

She looked toward Mom.

Then toward me.

The man said something.

Vanessa shook her head.

He left.

I leaned toward Marcus.

"Do you know that man?"

Marcus followed my gaze.

"No. Why?"

I watched Vanessa clutch the folder.

"Something's wrong."

Marcus touched my hand.

"Do you want me to check?"

I hesitated.

Then shook my head.

"Not yet."

I wanted one peaceful evening.

Just one.

But the feeling wouldn't leave me.

A few minutes later, Vanessa disappeared into the hallway.

Mom followed her.

I watched them leave.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

Congratulations on your wedding, Nia.

My heart tightened.

A second message appeared.

You should ask your mother what she signed six months ago.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed my mother's signature on a legal document.

At the top were three words.
