Surprise

Chapter 4

The first time I saw my signature on Daniel's loan documents, I thought I might faint.

It looked exactly like mine.

My full name.

Nia Carter.

The same long curve beneath the final letter.

Even the date was written in the style I usually used.

But I had never signed it.

I stared at the document Marcus showed me on his phone.

"Where did you get this?"

He swallowed.

"My father."

I looked up.

"Your dad?"

He nodded.

"He called me yesterday."

My stomach tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Marcus looked ashamed.

"Because I wanted you to enjoy the wedding."

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I wanted to scream.

Not because he was trying to hurt me.

But because everyone around me seemed convinced they could protect me by keeping secrets.

I took a breath.

"Marcus, I need honesty."

He nodded.

"I know."

I looked at him.

"All of it."

He squeezed my hand.

"Then I'll tell you everything."

He explained that Daniel had been borrowing money against several commercial properties owned by the Bennett family business.

His father, Robert Bennett, discovered unusual guarantees connected to those loans.

One document listed my design firm as a guarantor.

My stomach twisted.

"That's impossible."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

I looked at the document again.

"If this is real, my company could be exposed to serious financial risk."

He swallowed.

"That's why Dad called."

I felt sick.

My design firm employed thirty-two people.

Thirty-two families depended on those paychecks.

I had spent seven years building the company.

I wasn't going to let Daniel use it as collateral for his schemes.

I looked at Marcus.

"We need to call my attorney."

He nodded.

"Agreed."

Then I looked toward the clock.

Fifteen minutes until the ceremony.

I laughed bitterly.

"Of all days."

Marcus took my hand.

"Nia, we can postpone."

I looked at him.

He continued.

"I don't care about the flowers. The ballroom. The guests."

His voice softened.

"I just want you."

My heart tightened.

I squeezed his hand.

"I want you too."

He smiled.

Then I took a breath.

"But we're not letting Daniel decide whether we get married."

Marcus stared at me.

I continued.

"And we're not letting Vanessa decide either."

He smiled.

"Then what do you want to do?"

I looked toward my grandmother's gown.

The ivory silk shimmered beneath the lights.

I smiled through my tears.

"I want to put on my dress."

Marcus laughed softly.

"Then I'll see you at the altar."

He kissed my forehead.

Then left.

I turned toward Mom.

"Can you help me?"

Claire wiped her cheeks.

"Of course, sweetheart."

Vanessa stood near the door.

Her face was pale.

I looked at her.

"You're not standing beside me during the ceremony."

She flinched.

"Nia..."

I shook my head.

"You deliberately destroyed my dress."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"You stole from Grandma's foundation."

She looked down.

"And you helped Daniel hide things from his wife."

Vanessa began crying.

I took a breath.

"I can't pretend everything is okay."

She nodded weakly.

Then whispered, "Are you kicking me out?"

I studied her.

Part of me wanted to.

Part of me wanted her to feel the humiliation she had tried to cause.

But I remembered Grandma's words.

Never let someone else's cruelty decide who you become.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You can sit with the guests."

Her eyes widened.

"But?"

"But you need to stay away from the bridal suite and respect the boundaries I've set."

She nodded through her tears.

"I will."

I turned toward the wedding coordinator.

"Please have security escort Vanessa to her seat."

The coordinator nodded.

Vanessa looked at me one final time.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she whispered, "You always win."

My chest tightened.

I looked at her.

"Vanessa, this was never a competition."

She stared at me.

Then walked away.

Mom closed the door behind her.

For a long moment, we stood silently.

Then Claire began crying.

"I failed you both."

I turned.

"Mom..."

She shook her head.

"I spent years making excuses for Vanessa."

I looked down.

She continued.

"Every time she hurt you, I told you to be the bigger person."

My throat tightened.

"I know."

Claire wiped her tears.

"I thought keeping the peace meant protecting the family."

I nodded slowly.

She looked at me.

"But all I did was teach Vanessa that she could hurt you without consequences."

My eyes filled with tears.

Mom took my hands.

"I'm sorry."

I hugged her.

For a moment, I felt like a little girl again.

The little girl who wanted her mother to notice when her sister was cruel.

Claire held me tightly.

"I love you, Nia."

I cried against her shoulder.

"I love you too, Mom."

Then she stepped back.

She smiled through her tears.

"Now let's get you married."

I laughed.

"Please."

She helped me into Grandma's gown.

The silk was cool against my skin.

The hand-beaded bodice fit perfectly.

The lace sleeves settled gently over my arms.

Mom fastened the buttons.

Then adjusted the long train.

When I looked into the mirror, I stopped breathing.

For a moment, I could almost see Grandma standing behind me.

Her hands smoothing the fabric.

Her gentle smile.

Her voice telling me I was beautiful.

I touched the tiny blue ribbon sewn inside the gown.

YOU ARE ENOUGH.

Tears filled my eyes.

"Thank you, Grandma," I whispered.

Mom kissed my cheek.

"She'd be so proud."

I smiled.

Then we walked toward the ballroom.

The music began.

The doors opened.

And two hundred guests stood.

I saw Marcus at the altar.

His eyes widened.

Then he began crying.

I smiled through my tears.

The man I loved was waiting for me.

The sister who tried to stop the wedding was sitting among the guests.

And my grandmother's gown was carrying me toward the future she wanted for me.

I walked slowly down the aisle.

Every step felt like reclaiming something Vanessa had tried to take.

My joy.

My dignity.

My wedding day.

When I reached Marcus, he took my hands.

"You look incredible."

I laughed softly.

"Thank Grandma."

He smiled.

"I will."

The officiant began speaking.

For a while, the world became quiet.

We exchanged vows.

We promised honesty.

Loyalty.

Love.

And the courage to face difficult things together.

When Marcus placed the ring on my finger, I felt tears running down my cheeks.

He whispered, "I choose you."

I smiled.

"I choose you too."

The officiant pronounced us husband and wife.

Marcus kissed me.

The ballroom erupted in applause.

For the first time that day, I felt completely happy.

Then I saw Daniel.

He stood near the back of the room.

His expression was cold.

Beside him, Vanessa was crying.

Daniel leaned toward her.

Whispered something.

And handed her an envelope.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Then Vanessa looked directly at me.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

I knew whatever Daniel had given her wasn't a wedding card.

And when Marcus followed my gaze, his smile disappeared.

He recognized the envelope.

Then he whispered, "Nia, we need to get that."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His face went pale.

"Because that's the envelope Dad said Daniel stole from his office."

My chest tightened.

"What was inside?"

Marcus swallowed.

"The original loan documents."

I stared toward Vanessa.

She was already moving toward the exit.

I looked at my new husband.

May you like

Then whispered, "Our wedding isn't over yet."

And together, we stepped away from the altar to stop the next betrayal before it could destroy our future.
