Surprise

Chapter 3

Lily fell asleep holding my hand.

I remained beside the hotel bed until dawn.

The photograph lay on the table.

Seven years earlier, Vanessa told me she visited that clinic for fertility treatment.

We had struggled to conceive.

I remembered sitting beside her during appointments, holding her while she cried, and believing we faced every disappointment together.

Mason had supposedly been working in Chicago.

The photograph proved he was not.

At eight, Naomi arranged a DNA test.

“You do not have to do this immediately,” she said.

“I need the truth.”

“Whatever the result, you are Lily’s legal father.”

“I know.”

Lily looked up from her cereal.

“What result?”

I forced a smile.

“Just some boring adult paperwork.”

She studied my face.

“You said we don’t lie when something is scary.”

The words humbled me.

“You’re right.”

I sat beside her.

“We’re checking something about when you were born.”

“Am I sick?”

“No.”

“Are you still my daddy?”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

“No test changes that.”

She nodded.

“Then I don’t care about the paperwork.”

Children often understood love more clearly than adults.

A nurse collected our samples.

Results would take two days.

At the emergency custody hearing, Vanessa entered holding Mason’s hand.

She released it when she saw the judge watching.

My father sat behind them with Reed Development’s corporate attorney.

He had chosen his side publicly.

Naomi submitted the recordings.

Vanessa’s lawyer called them illegally obtained.

“The child recorded inside her own home,” Naomi said. “Mr. Reed did not direct her.”

The judge listened to Lily’s whispered message.

Her expression hardened.

Vanessa stared at me with hatred.

The judge suspended Vanessa’s custody rights pending investigation and granted me temporary custody.

Mason whispered something to her.

She stood abruptly.

“He is manipulating our daughter.”

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Our daughter?”

Vanessa realized her mistake.

She corrected herself.

“My daughter.”

Naomi noticed.

So did I.

Outside court, reporters surrounded us.

Someone had leaked the recordings.

My father’s attorney immediately blamed me.

I protected Lily’s face and moved her into Naomi’s car.

Howard blocked my door.

“You are destroying the company.”

“Mason did that.”

“If the merger collapses, the bank calls our loans.”

“Then tell the board the truth.”

“The truth will ruin your brother.”

“He tried to steal my child.”

“He made a mistake.”

“A six-month affair is a mistake. Seven years of lies are a plan.”

My father looked at the photograph in my hand.

His expression told me he had seen it before.

“You knew.”

“Not everything.”

“You knew enough.”

He lowered his voice.

“Mason came to me before the wedding. He said he and Vanessa had ended their relationship.”

My chest tightened.

“You let me marry her?”

“She chose you.”

“No. She chose my name and my shares.”

“That is not fair.”

“Was Lily already planned?”

Howard looked away.

I stepped closer.

“Answer me.”

“I don’t know.”

“You never wanted to know.”

He said nothing.

That silence ended something inside me.

I had spent my life trying to earn his approval.

Mason failed, and Howard protected him.

I questioned, and Howard punished me.

It had never been about merit.

It was about obedience.

“I’m calling a special board meeting,” I said.

“You do not have the votes.”

“I have evidence of fraud.”

His face tightened.

“If you expose Mason, I will testify that you are emotionally unstable.”

“Then I’ll play the recording of you planning to use Lily against me.”

For the first time, my father looked afraid.

At the hotel, Lily drew pictures while Naomi and I reviewed company records.

Mason had moved eleven million dollars into shell contractors.

Several projects existed only on paper.

The merger would have buried those losses inside a larger corporation.

My shares gave me power to block it.

That was why they needed me removed.

Vanessa arrived at the hotel that evening despite the temporary order.

Security called my room.

She stood in the lobby crying.

“I only want to see my daughter.”

Naomi advised me not to go downstairs.

I did anyway, leaving Lily with a police liaison.

Vanessa looked smaller than usual.

No makeup.

No expensive coat.

For one dangerous second, I remembered loving her.

“Is Lily all right?”

“She’s frightened.”

“I would never hurt her.”

“You let my father hold her until I signed away custody.”

“I didn’t know he would do that.”

“You prepared the form.”

“Mason prepared it.”

“You filed it.”

She wiped her tears.

“I made terrible choices.”

“Yes.”

“I thought Mason loved me.”

“So did I.”

The words struck her.

She looked away.

“He said we would finally be a family after you were removed from the company.”

“You already had a family.”

“You were never home.”

“I worked to support the life you wanted.”

“I was lonely.”

“Then you could have left honestly.”

She began crying harder.

“I’m pregnant.”

The lobby seemed to shift beneath me.

“How far?”

“Ten weeks.”

“Is it his?”

“Yes.”

I turned away.

She caught my sleeve.

“I need help.”

“Call Mason.”

“He won’t answer.”

The pattern was already repeating.

Mason wanted what belonged to someone else.

Once responsibility appeared, he disappeared.

Vanessa whispered, “Your father told him to leave the country.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

“With what money?”

She did not answer.

Naomi rushed into the lobby holding her phone.

“Mason accessed the company’s emergency reserve twenty minutes ago.”

“How much?”

“Three million.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“He said he only needed enough to hire a lawyer.”

My phone rang.

The DNA laboratory had expedited the results because of the custody case.

Lily was not Mason’s child.

She was mine.

Relief almost dropped me to my knees.

Then Naomi received another alert.

Mason had used Vanessa’s access code to enter Lily’s school records.

He downloaded her schedule, medical information, and emergency contacts.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why does he need that?”

May you like

Her face went white.

“He once told me if the paternity test proved she was yours, he would make sure you never got to keep her.”
