Surprise

Chapter 2

I drove directly to my hotel.

The PlayStation sat on the passenger seat beside me like a locked evidence box.

I kept hearing Lily’s voice in my head.

She had called me Thursday night, hours before Vanessa demanded space.

“Daddy, if I tell you something, will you get mad?”

I had been reviewing invoices.

I told her we would talk after dinner.

We never did.

Vanessa started the argument before Lily came downstairs.

By midnight, I was gone.

The memory filled me with shame.

My daughter had tried to warn me.

I had allowed an adult fight to silence her.

At the hotel, I connected the console to the television.

The home screen opened under Lily’s profile.

She loved building games and recorded short clips whenever she created something new.

Most files showed colorful houses and characters.

The newest recording had no game title.

Lily had named it DADDY WATCH.

The video began with a dark screen.

I heard footsteps.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“Stop recording and go to bed.”

“I want to show Daddy my castle.”

“He does not care about a game.”

“He said he does.”

A door closed.

The screen showed Lily’s unfinished digital house, but voices continued in the background.

Mason spoke.

“Did she hear us?”

“No.”

“What about Caleb?”

“He believes I need space.”

“And the transfer?”

“I copied his signature.”

My hands turned cold.

Mason lowered his voice.

“Dad said the board will accept it if Caleb appears unstable.”

Vanessa answered.

“I have the video of him hitting the wall.”

“You provoked him.”

“That doesn’t matter. The camera only shows his reaction.”

The recording continued.

Lily must have left her headset microphone active while she hid beneath a blanket.

Mason and Vanessa discussed my company shares, the custody petition, and a joint account containing nearly four hundred thousand dollars.

Then my father’s voice entered the conversation.

I stopped the recording.

I could not breathe.

Howard had been inside my house.

“Caleb cannot lead Reed Development,” he said on the video. “He questions every decision and blocks expansion.”

“He owns thirty-eight percent,” Mason replied.

“Not after the transfer.”

Vanessa asked about payment.

My father answered.

“You receive the lake house and two million when the merger closes.”

The room blurred.

My wife had placed a price on betraying me.

Mason asked, “And Lily?”

“She stays with Vanessa,” Howard said. “Caleb will surrender if he believes fighting could hurt the girl.”

I replayed the sentence.

My own father was willing to use my daughter as leverage.

Then Lily’s voice sounded closer to the microphone.

“Grandpa?”

The adults stopped talking.

“What are you doing downstairs?” Vanessa demanded.

“I’m thirsty.”

Howard spoke gently.

“Come here, sweetheart.”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“You’re being mean to Daddy.”

A chair scraped.

Lily began crying.

Vanessa said, “Give me the controller.”

“No!”

The recording shook.

Lily ran.

The screen briefly showed the hallway as she carried the controller. Then the clip ended.

Another file followed.

This one was only twelve seconds long.

Lily whispered near the microphone.

“Daddy, Uncle Mason said they are going to erase this. I put a password on it. It’s your birthday.”

I covered my face.

She had done what I failed to do.

She had listened.

She had protected the truth.

I copied every recording onto three drives and uploaded one to a secure account.

Then I called my college friend, Naomi Brooks, a family attorney.

She arrived within an hour.

Naomi watched the clips twice.

“This proves conspiracy to commit fraud,” she said. “It also challenges any custody claim Vanessa files.”

“Can we get Lily now?”

“We need to confirm she’s with Howard.”

I called my father.

He answered calmly.

“Where is Lily?”

“She’s asleep.”

“I’m coming for her.”

“That would be unwise.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She is safe.”

“You discussed using her to force me out of the company.”

Silence.

Then he asked, “What did you hear?”

“Enough.”

“Bring me the console.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You heard your granddaughter crying, and that is your concern?”

“You don’t understand the situation.”

“Then explain.”

“The company is in trouble.”

“Because Mason borrowed against projects without board approval?”

My father did not answer.

I had questioned those loans for months.

He always told me to trust my brother.

“How much does Mason owe?” I asked.

“That is not relevant.”

“It is the reason you need my shares.”

“We need the merger.”

“And I would vote against it.”

“Yes.”

The honesty almost shocked me.

“You chose him.”

“I chose the company.”

“You chose the son who damaged it and decided to remove the son trying to save it.”

“Bring me the console, Caleb.”

“I’m bringing the police.”

His voice became cold.

“If you create a public scandal, thousands of employees could lose their jobs.”

“You should have considered them before forging my signature.”

I ended the call.

Naomi contacted the police and requested an emergency custody order.

Before officers could reach Howard’s estate, Vanessa filed her petition.

She claimed I entered our home, threatened her and Mason, then stole a gaming console belonging to Lily.

The temporary judge ordered me not to approach Vanessa.

The order said nothing about my father.

Police accompanied me to his house.

Howard opened the gate himself.

He wore a robe over his clothes as if we had interrupted an ordinary evening.

“Where is she?”

He stepped aside.

Lily sat on the living-room sofa.

The moment she saw me, she ran.

“Daddy!”

I dropped to my knees.

She threw herself against my chest.

“I saved it,” she whispered.

“I found it.”

“Did they erase it?”

“No.”

Her body relaxed.

Howard watched us with no expression.

Naomi showed the police the video.

My father claimed the conversation had been taken out of context.

Then Lily looked at the officer.

“Grandpa said I could not leave until Daddy signed.”

Howard’s face changed.

The officer turned toward him.

“Signed what?”

Lily pointed to the dining table.

A custody surrender form lay beside a pen.

My name was typed beneath a blank signature line.

Howard tried to explain.

Nobody listened.

Police allowed me to take Lily to the hotel pending the emergency hearing.

As we packed her overnight bag, she handed me a game case.

Inside was a folded photograph.

Vanessa and Mason stood outside a medical clinic.

The date printed on the image was seven years earlier.

Three months before Lily was born.

On the back, Vanessa had written a message to Mason.

Soon we won’t have to hide anymore.

I looked at my daughter.

“Where did you find this?”

“In Mommy’s drawer.”

My heart pounded.

May you like

Mason had not entered my marriage six months ago.

He had been there from the beginning.
